<p>The accounting method you use for your business determines how you calculate the amount of sales tax you pay to the government. If you report revenues using the cash method of accounting, you pay sales tax based on the goods and services for which you have collected payment. If you use the accrual method, you pay sales tax based on the goods and services for which you've billed. <alink type="cncpt" href="Learnthedifferencebetweencashbasisandaccrualbasisaccounting.xml"/></p>

<li>On the <emph>Accounts & Bills </emph>menu, click <emph>Account List</emph>.</li>
<li>In the left pane, click <emph>Analyze receivables</emph>, and then click <emph>Sales tax collected</emph>.</li>
<li>At the bottom of the page, click a date range, such as <emph>Last 3 Months</emph>.</li>
</ol>
<p>When you enter a transaction to remit sales tax to the government, use the special Sales Tax category so that your reports and records will be accurate.</p>

<li>In the upper right of the page, make sure the <emph>Show Transaction Forms</emph> check box is selected.</li>
<li>On the transaction form click the <emph>Withdrawal</emph> tab, and then click <emph>New</emph>. </li>
<li>In the <emph>Pay to</emph> box, type the government agency name. </li>
<li>In the <emph>Category</emph> box, under <emph>Special</emph>, click <emph>Transfer</emph>. </li>
<li>For the subcategory, click <emph>Sales Tax</emph>. </li>
<li>Complete the transaction form, and click <emph>Enter</emph>.</li>

<p>If you do not see <emph>Sales Tax</emph> under <emph>Transfer</emph>, make sure that you have first created an invoice. Money creates a Sales Tax account for you when you enter your first invoice.</p>
