  12. requirements and installation instructions.

  14. Before you install Netscape 6.2.2, be sure to read the

  31. To view and use the new streamlined "Modern" theme,
  32. your display monitor should be set to display 
  33. thousands of colors. For users who cannot set their 
  34. displays to use more than 256 colors, Netscape 
  35. recommends using the "Classic" theme for
  36. Netscape 6.2.2.
  37.     
  38. To select the Classic theme after you have installed
  39. Netscape 6.2.2:
  40.     
  41.      1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  42.      2. Under the Appearance category, choose Themes.
  43.      3. Click to select the Classic theme.
  44.      4. Click the Apply Classic button, then click OK.
  45.      Changed themes take effect after you restart 
  46.      Netscape 6.2.2.

  48. During installation, the creation of temporary files
  49. requires more free disk space than listed below.

  86. - For Mac OS and Windows users, it is strongly 
  87. recommended that you exit all programs before running 
  88. the setup program. Also, you should temporarily 
  89. disable virus-detection software.
  90.  
  91. - Install into a clean (new) directory. Installing on
  92. top of released product builds may cause problems.
  93.  
  94. - The Profile Manager lets you create different 
  95. profiles, each with its own bookmarks, preferences, 
  96. email settings, and other user-specific settings. To 
  97. work with profiles, you must first exit the browser, 
  98. then open the Profile Manager:
  99.  
  100.     * On Windows, open the Start menu and choose 
  101.     Programs, then Netscape 6, then Profile Manager.
  102.     * On Mac OS, open the Netscape folder and then 
  103.     double-click the Profile Manager.
  104.     * On Linux, type the following at the command 
  105.     line: 
  106.     ./netscape -profilemanager
  107.

  109. from the Help menu in the browser and click Managing 
  110. Profiles.

  118. *Installation Instructions -- Windows
  119.      
  120.      1. If you are installing from the CD: 
  121.      - Double-click the Windows directory on the 
  122.      Netscape 6.2.2 CD to open it, if you haven't done 
  123.      so already. 
  124.      
  125.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  126.      - Click the N6Setup.exe link to download it to 
  127.      your machine.
  128.      
  129.      2. Double-click the N6Setup program icon on 
  130.      your machine to begin the Setup program.
  131.      
  132.      3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the 
  133.      Setup program. The program starts automatically 
  134.      the first time.
  135.  
  136.      Note: On Windows, Netscape 6.2.2 includes Quick 
  137.      Launch. Quick Launch shortens the time it takes
  138.      for Netscape to start. If your computer is low
  139.      in memory, and you enable Quick Launch during
  140.      installation, you have the option in Netscape
  141.      to temporarily or permanently disable Quick 
  142.      Launch. For more information about using Quick
  143.      Launch, see the section "Using Quick Launch" in
  144.      the Help and Support Center. (In Netscape, click 
  145.      on Help and select Help and Support Center.)

  147. *Installation Instructions -- Mac OS
  148.  
  149.      Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not
  150.      disable extensions before installing Netscape 6.2.2
  151.      on Mac OS.

  153.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  154.      - Skip to step 3 now.
  155.      
  156.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  157.      - Click the MacNetscape6Installer.sea.bin link 
  158.      to download it to your machine. For Mac OS X, 
  159.      click the Netscape6-macosX.sit.bin link.
  160.      
  161.      By default, the download file (compressed in
  162.      MacBinary II format, with an extension of .bin)
  163.      is downloaded to your desktop.
  164.      
  165.      If the downloaded file does not expand 
  166.      automatically, you must expand the file using a 
  167.      program such as StuffIt Expander. If you don't 
  168.      have StuffIt Expander, you can get a copy by
  169.      visiting:

  173.      Note: For the Mac OS X version of Netscape 
  174.      6.2.2, no further installation is required. 
  175.      Launch Netscape 6.2.2 by double-clicking on
  176.      the "Netscape 6" icon in the folder
  177.      where the downloaded file was expanded.

  179.      2. Double-click the Netscape 6 Installer 
  180.      folder.
  181.      
  182.      3. Double-click the Netscape 6 Installer 
  183.      icon.
  184.      
  185.      4. Follow the on-screen instructions to 
  186.      complete the installation process. The 
  187.      program starts automatically the first time.

  189. *Installation Instructions -- Unix
  190.  
  191.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  192.      - Change to the Linux directory on the CD: 
  193.      cd linux. Then skip to step 3.
  194.      
  195.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  196.      - Download the netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz 
  197.      archive.

  199.      2. Type one of the following to gunzip and 
  200.      untar the archive: 
  201.      tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
  202.      OR
  203.      gzip -dc netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz | tar xvf -
  204.      
  205.      3. Change to the directory that contains the
  206.      Netscape installation files:
  207.      cd netscape-installer
  208.  
  209.      4. Run the Netscape 6.2.2 Installer with the run 
  210.      script:
  211.      ./netscape-installer
  212.      
  213.      5. Follow the on-screen instructions to 
  214.      complete the installation process.

  216.      6. To start Netscape, change to the directory 
  217.      where you installed it and run the program: 
  218.      ./netscape 
  219.      The program starts automatically the first time.
