  8. ---- About AbiWord

  10. AbiWord is an "Open Source" word processor.  (If you would like more
  11. information about the concept of Open Source, you might start looking
  12. at www.opensource.org.)

  14. Because AbiWord is Open Source, it is freely distributable and
  15. available for use by anyone, without restrictions.  With AbiWord,
  16. there is no need to worry about piracy.  We encourage you to make as
  17. many copies as you like and to give them to your friends and
  18. colleagues.

  20. Note that AbiWord is not "shareware".  You are under no moral or legal
  21. obligation to pay anyone for this right to use this program.

  23. If you are not familiar with this kind of software, please rest
  24. assured that there is no catch.  AbiWord is free, and it will always
  25. be free.  It is developed in a public fashion, by members of the
  26. software community from all over the world, communicating and
  27. collaborating together via the Internet.

  29. ---- Using AbiWord

  31. Please remember that AbiWord is not yet a shipping product.  Many
  32. features are still missing, and the application has not yet undergone
  33. extensive testing.

  35. Our primary reason for making AbiWord available to you now is to allow
  36. everyone the opportunity to see its current status.  AbiWord is under
  37. constant development, and new releases are being made available on a
  38. frequent basis.  The software is improving steadily, with each new
  39. release containing more features and more stability.  You may download
  40. new releases as often as you like.

  42. Despite these disclaimers, you may very well find AbiWord to be useful
  43. even now.  A number of people have successfully used AbiWord to write
  44. a variety of documents.

  46. ---- Getting Help

  48. Unfortunately, neither technical support nor a user manual is
  49. available yet.  These will be available from AbiSource in the near
  50. future.

  52. In the meantime, your best resources for getting help with AbiWord are:

  54. - Visit the AbiSource website at www.abisource.com.  Here you will
  55.   find a growing amount of information, including Frequently Asked
  56.   Questions.  You may also download the latest version of AbiWord.

  58. - Interact with other users of AbiWord.  AbiSource provides an email
  59.   list for AbiWord users.  Information about subscribing to this list
  60.   is available on the AbiSource website.

  62. ---- Helping

  64. If you would like to join the community of people who are developing
  65. AbiWord, there are lots of ways you can help, even if you are not a
  66. computer programmer.

  68. If you are in fact a programmer, and would like to work on the
  69. project, see the developer information on our website, join the
  70. abiword-dev mailing list, and ask what needs to be done.  There are
  71. always features or ports which need attention.

  73. If you are not a programmer, you can still join the abiword-dev
  74. mailing list and contribute in other ways.  The easiest way to help is
  75. to simply use the program and report any bugs you find.  A tool called
  76. Bugzilla is available on our website for exactly this purpose.

  78. ---- Supported Platforms
  79.  
  80. AbiWord is a cross-platform application, meaning that it was designed
  81. to work well on multiple types of computers and operating systems.
  82.  
  83. At the present time, AbiWord is supported on Windows (including
  84. Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0), Linux (including Intel
  85. and Alpha), and a variety of other UNIX-like systems (including
  86. Solaris, and *BSD).

  88. Other operating systems will be supported in the future.
  89.  
  90. AbiWord is not yet available for the Macintosh, but efforts to remedy
  91. this situation have begun.
