  40.    This is an aide-memoire which may make installation of Linux a
  41.    pleasant experience for you. It fills an important role in the
  42.    promotion of Linux.
  43.    It will help you to be prepared with all the answers which may be
  44.    needed during the course of installation of Linux on your machine or
  45.    on anybody else's machine. Sometimes, it is very inconvenient and even
  46.    impossible to find out some details in the middle of an installation
  47.    procedure. This becomes all the more difficult when you are installing
  48.    Linux on somebody else's machine, and in somebody else's office.
  49.    This checklist, when filled up, will help you go through your Linux
  50.    documentation and verify in advance whether certain hardware are
  51.    supported by the distribution you are planning to install. It will
  52.    also help you to be prepared with the packages you would need to
  53.    install, and the configuration choices which need to be done.
  54.    The idea is to reduce the chances of frustrating surprises.
  55.    This checklist is only for installing Linux on PCs. You may use this
  56.    checklist as a model for other classes of machines (e.g.SUN, Alpha,
  57.    ...).

  63.   Who must use this checklist ?
  64.      * If you are planning to install Linux on somebody else's machine,
  65.        or in a location which is not your own work place, you must
  66.        absolutely get this checklist completed in advance. It is
  67.        important to get this questionnaire answered by your host, so that
  68.        you go adequately prepared for the installation
  69.      * If you are planning to organise an "Install fest" (we Indians call
  70.        it "Linux mela"), ask your participants to come with this
  71.        checklist answered.
  72.      * Conversely, if you are going to an Install fest (aka Linux mela),
  73.        to get Linux installed on your machine, do your home-work. Go with
  74.        answers to this checklist.
  75.      * If you are going to ask someone to come over and install Linux for
  76.        you, send him/her this questionnaire with as many responses as you
  77.        know.
  78.      * If you are the D-I-Y type, you must start by answering all these
  79.        questions, so that you can save time for enjoying your Linux !

  126.     Welcome to the world of Linux. Your first step in  installing
  127.     Linux on your PC will begin by answering a few (?), simple(?)
  128.     questions about your hardware.
  129.  
  130.     This checklist will make it easy for you and us to go through
  131.     the  installation, painlessly and without  surprises.  Please
  132.     take  your  own  time and fill up  the  following  checklist.
  133.     Wherever   possible,  and  necessary,  we  have  given   some
  134.     suggestions and hints, for your convenience.
  135.  
  136.     If you don't know all the details, you should be able to find
  137.     them  in  your  computer's manuals.  Or,  ask  your  hardware
  138.     vendor, or your local hardware "guru".
  139.  
  140.     If  you still have problems finding answers, don't  worry  --
  141.     you   can  just  ignore any areas you don't know.  Bring   in
  142.     your   machine  and  ALL manuals you have.  The  installation
  143.     may succeed with some trials and  a lot of luck.

  145.     Remember,  Linux,  like many other software  products,  is  a
  146.     growing  product.  Some  of your hardware may  still  not  be
  147.     supported  in  the version of Linux which is being installed.
  148.
