- APPLE, BORLAND, LOTUS AND NOVELL ANNOUNCE JOINT DEVELOPMENT AND
- SUPPORT OF VENDORDINDEPENDENT MESSAGING (VIM) INTERFACE
- SPECIFICATION
-
- First Release of Specification Available March 1992
-
- REDWOOD CITY, California D February 4, 1992 D Apple Computer,
- Inc., Borland International, Inc., Lotus Development Corporation
- and Novell, Inc. today announced that the four companies have
- signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop and support
- the VendorDIndependent Messaging (VIM) interface specification.
- The four companies have formed a steering group and will serve as
- the trustees of the VIM Interface standard.
-
- The VIM Interface specification provides a nonDproprietary,
- industry standard programming interface to help software developers
- and corporate developers write messagingDand mailDenabled
- applications. The VIM Interface alleviates the confusion created
- by disparate programming interfaces on multiple computer platforms
- and messaging systems.
-
- "We were happy to form the VIM Interface group to work together as
- equals to develop the best possible technical design representing
- a broad set of needs and interests. Our efforts have resulted in
- the VendorDIndependent Messaging Interface specification. Lotus'
- earlier proposal, known as OMI and designed with the participation
- of Apple and IBM, has served as a catalyst for the formation of
- this new joint effort," said Gursharan Sidhu, Apple's technical
- director and chairman of the VIM Interface steering group. "The
- trusteeship of the VIM Interface by respected leaders of the
- industry assures software developers of a vendorDindependent
- programming interface available on multiple system platforms and in
- various system vendor products. As a group, we want to move the
- industry forward by facilitating the use of messaging services in
- applications."
-
- Apple, Borland, Lotus, Novell and IBM Announce Support
-
- Apple will support the VIM Interface in future versions of System
- 7D. Borland will take advantage of the VIM Interface to let its
- customers access a variety of mail and messaging environments.
- Lotus will support the VIM Interface in future versions of its
- cc:Mail and Notes products. Novell will support the VIM Interface
- in future versions of its NetWare MHSD (Message Handling Service)
- products. IBM will support the VIM Interface in its office product
- strategy.
-
- "The VIM Interface is an important part of Apple's strategy for our
- Open Collaboration Environment (OCE)," explained Roger Heinen,
- Apple's vice president and general manager of the Macintosh
- Software Architecture division. "Built upon System 7, OCE is an
- underlying foundation to create new collaborative Macintosh
- applications. Support of the VIM Interface standard in OCE
- demonstrates Apple's commitment to promoting multiDplatform
- development."
-
- "The VIM Interface will help us to deliver messaging capabilities
- that will take advantage of a wide variety of transports," said
- Richard Schwartz, Borland's senior vice president and chief
- technical officer. "By using the VIM Interface, we can concentrate
- on developing great applications that will provide broad
- connectivity without having to write to multiple proprietary
- programming interfaces."
-
- "Customers are telling us that workgroup solutions on multiple
- platforms are critical to their businesses," said Terry Rogers,
- vice president and general manager of Lotus' Communications
- Products Division. "We are pleased to be working with the other
- steering group members to expand the availability of mailDenabled
- applications."
-
- Kanwal Rekhi, executive vice president of Novell's Interoperability
- Systems Group, said, "Novell is pleased to have contributed to the
- specification's development and will support it so developers have
- the freedom to choose how they build their products. Novell
- remains committed to the more than 700 SMFD (Standard Message
- Format) developers; the VIM Interface will provide a procedural
- programming interface alternative to the SMF file format interface
- incorporated in the NetWare MHS messaging engine."
-
- Providing support for the VIM Interface in our office product
- strategy emphasizes our commitment to open systems and enhances our
- support for customers in mixed vendor environments," said Earl
- Wheeler, IBM senior vice president and general manager, Programming
- Systems.
-
- VIM Interface Specification Details
-
- This announcement by Apple, Borland, Lotus and Novell supercedes
- all aspects of the previous OMI specification and the announcement
- by Lotus last September. The VIM Interface specification will be
- available to all interested parties in March 1992. Vendors will be
- able to develop software implementations based on the VIM Interface
- with no royalty fees. Further details regarding the specification
- and its technical support will be outlined by the VIM Interface
- steering group prior to its distribution.
