  3. Networking Leader Expands Network Management Product Line with New,
  4. Easy-to-Use Analysis and Monitoring System for NetWare

  6. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- May 11, 1992 -- Novell Inc. today announced
  7. LANalyzer for NetWare, the first monitoring and analysis product
  8. designed specifically for NetWare networks.  LANalyzer for NetWare is an
  9. affordable, hardware-independent network management product that brings
  10. sophisticated network monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities to
  11. virtually every Ethernet NetWare installation.

  13. LANalyzer for NetWare combines network monitoring and analysis in a
  14. single, easy-to-use Microsoft Windows-based system.  Its graphical user
  15. interface provides an easily understood view of network statistics, and
  16. features a unique point-and-click filtering system that minimizes the
  17. networking expertise necessary to use the product.  It includes
  18. specialized tests and diagnostics for the NetWare environment.  The
  19. product also includes complete seven-layer protocol decodes for all
  20. versions of NetWare, as well as for AppleTalk Phases 1 and 2.

  22. LANalyzer for NetWare can be used as a network troubleshooting tool, a
  23. realtime monitoring system, an in-depth statistical analyzer and a
  24. network growth planner.  The product runs on any 80386 or better
  25. DOS-Windows workstation and can analyze traffic on any type of Ethernet
  26. cabling (standard, thin-net or 10BASE-T).

  29. management and workstation diagnostics with a tool that lets them manage
  30. the NetWare environment as a whole," said Duane Murray, vice president
  31. and general manager of Novell's Network Management Products Division.

  33. the first affordable, easy-to-use management and analysis solution for
  34. NetWare networks.  It takes network monitoring and troubleshooting out
  35. of the realm of network or protocol specialists and makes it available
  36. to all NetWare administrators.  It's the first management tool anyone
  37. who administers NetWare networks should consider buying."

  39. According to Murray, LANalyzer for NetWare brings together three key
  40. Novell technologies:  the NetWare operating system; the industry-leading
  41. high-performance LANalyzer; and the recently introduced NetWare
  42. Management System.  "We've applied analysis and troubleshooting
  43. technologies pioneered in the original LANalyzer, optimized them for the
  44. NetWare environment, and added the intuitive Windows interface and
  45. management tools we're using in NMS," Murray said.  "The combination
  46. creates a full-featured, easy-to-use analysis tool priced to
  47. significantly expand the market and use of this technology."

  51. Novell's LANalyzer for NetWare offers the following features and
  52. functions:

  54. ~    Intuitive interface -- LANalyzer for NetWare is designed to make
  55.      complex network analysis and management functions as easy to
  56.      understand and use as possible.  Users navigate using the familiar
  57.      Windows mouse-driven system.  The product's initial interface is an
  58.      automotive "dashboard," which displays network statistics on three
  59.      circular gauges with needles that move to represent levels of key
  60.      network activity, including traffic rates, bandwidth utilization
  61.      and errors.  LANalyzer for NetWare detects common problems and
  62.      alerts users to network anomalies through a system of warning
  63.      lights, audible alarms and text descriptions of error conditions.

  65. ~    Point-and-click filtering -- A feature unique to LANalyzer for
  66.      NetWare, point-and-click filtering minimizes the networking
  67.      expertise needed on the part of the user.  Rather than using
  68.      complex software commands to set up filters to find specific
  69.      network traffic or events, users can simply use the mouse to select
  70.      anything of interest, such as a particular protocol, address or
  71.      event.  LANalyzer for NetWare automatically filters on those
  72.      criteria and displays all similar conditions or events.  For
  73.      example, if users want to look at errors in opening files on a
  74.      server, they simply highlight one of those events and LANalyzer for
  75.      NetWare automatically finds all similar occurrences and displays
  76.      them on the screen.  The information displayed establishes a
  77.      pattern which indicates the source of the problem.

  79. ~    Active name gathering -- Another unique LANalyzer for NetWare
  80.      feature, the product actively queries servers and workstations to
  81.      get the names of all NetWare and Macintosh nodes logged into the
  82.      network.  Active systems allow administrators to get the names
  83.      quickly and on demand; passive systems must wait for stations to
  84.      announce their names (most stations only announce their names when
  85.      logging into a server).

  87. ~    Packet capture and interpretation -- LANalyzer for NetWare offers
  88.      full seven-layer decoding capabilities for all NetWare and
  89.      AppleTalk networking protocols.  This allows the user to determine
  90.      exactly what is occurring on the network at the packet level.  Full
  91.      protocol decodes help users identify and resolve networking
  92.      problems.  LANalyzer for NetWare is the only analysis product, with
  93.      the exception of the original LANalyzer, to support all versions of
  94.      NetWare, including NetWare 3.x, NetWare 2.x and NetWare Lite.

  96. ~    Network trend information -- The product stores long-term network
  97.      statistics to disk.  These statistics can be viewed graphically or
  98.      exported to standard spreadsheets for additional analysis or to
  99.      help plan future network expansion.

  101. ~    Hardware independence -- LANalyzer for NetWare runs on any standard
  102.      Microsoft Windows 3.x-based PC.  This allows LANalyzer for NetWare
  103.      software to be stored centrally and moved to any DOS-Windows
  104.      workstation on any segment that requires service.  Hardware
  105.      independence also leverages existing computer equipment.

  107. Pricing and Availability

  109. Novell's LANalyzer for NetWare, a complete network monitoring and
  110. analysis system for NetWare networks, will be available through Novell
  111. distribution channels in June 1992.  The suggested list price is
  112. US$1,495.  For a limited time, LANalyzer for NetWare will be offered at
  113. the introductory suggested list price of US$995.

  115. The original LANalyzer, recently enhanced in release 3.11A, is also
  116. available now.  It includes the expert Automated Troubleshooting System,
  117. full decodes for 18 networking environments, LANalyzer operational
  118. software, a specialized network analysis interface card and extensive
  119. documentation.  Versions for Ethernet or Token Ring (4 and 16 Mbps)
  120. topologies list for US$12,500.  A combined Ethernet and Token Ring
  121. version lists for US$19,980.
