  3. First Management System to Link Schematic Maps with Floor Plans;
  4. Includes Graphical Interface for HMI-Compliant Hubs

  6. SAN JOSE, Calif. --  February 5, 1992 -- Novell, Inc., today
  7. announced an optional enhancement package for its NetWare
  8. Management System, the NetWare Management Enhanced Map, the first
  9. network management application to discover nodes on a network and
  10. allow them to be mapped into a building floor plan.

  12. The product also includes Novell's Hub Services Manager (HSM)
  13. application, the first graphical user interface for HMI-compliant
  14. hubs.  HSM gives users a hardware-independent, easy-to-use network
  15. wiring management solution.  HMI, or Hub Management Interface, is
  16. an open Novell specification that lets hub card manufacturers
  17. integrate their products with the NetWare environment to create
  18. reliable, server-resident or standalone intelligent connectivity
  19. solutions.

  21. "Networks are so critical to organizations today that downtime has
  22. to be minimized," said Duane Murray, vice president and general
  23. manager of Novell's Network Management Products Division.  "Because
  24. the NetWare Management Enhanced Map associates network nodes with
  25. their precise location, a network manager can go straight to a
  26. malfunctioning device and fix it or isolate it before it can bring
  27. down the rest of the network.  This fulfills Novell's mission to
  28. grow the network computing industry by making network management
  29. easier, faster and more reliable."

  31. NetWare Management Enhanced Map Features

  33. Novell's NetWare Management Enhanced Map offers these key features
  34. and functions:

  36. o    Locational mapping -- Users can load bit-map images of their
  37.      building layouts using a scanner or many standard graphics
  38.      tools. Automatically discovered network devices, represented
  39.      by icons, may be overlaid onto these images by selecting an
  40.      icon and dragging it onto the appropriate location on the map. 
  41.      This links objects with their exact location, allowing network
  42.      managers to find a malfunctioning networked device quickly.

  44. o    Enhanced auto-discovery -- The NetWare Management Enhanced Map
  45.      can discover IP routers to provide an integrated view of an IP
  46.      network; Hub Management Interface-compliant Hub cards to
  47.      provide a complete physical network view; and additional
  48.      logical mapping data. %Full SNMP support in IP environments --
  49.      The NetWare Management Enhanced Map contains a "MIB Browser"
  50.      utility that can manage any SNMP (Simple Network Management
  51.      Protocol) device, including Novell's recently introduced
  52.      NetWare for Macintosh MIB.

  54. Hub Services Manager Offers Graphical Control of Structured Wiring
  55. With the NetWare Management Enhanced Map, Novell is including a
  56. Windows-based management application, Hub Services Manager, that
  57. can manage structured wiring functions.  Working in conjunction
  58. with the NetWare Management Map, HSM automatically discovers
  59. devices connected to the hub, maps them logically, and displays
  60. statistics on hub status, port utilization rates, and monitors
  61. statistics between attached nodes.

  65. Novell's NetWare Management Enhanced Map (Windows) will be
  66. available through Novell's distribution channels in July 1992 for
  67. the suggested list price of US$1995.  The Hub Services Manager
  68. application is included at no extra cost.
