- NEW BURST MODE PROTOCOL FROM NOVELL GREATLY IMPROVES WIDE- AND
- LOCAL-AREA NETWORKING PERFORMANCE
-
- What: Novell today announced its new Burst Mode protocol (previously
- Packet Burst) that significantly improves the performance of customers'
- wide- and local-area NetWare networks. The Burst Mode protocol, which
- consists of a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) for the server and a new
- shell for the DOS client, maximizes existing network bandwidth by
- improving the way packets of information are sent through the network
- when using the IPX/SPX protocol.
-
- Depending on the network configuration, customers can realize
- improvement in performance by as much as 300 percent on wide-area
- networks and up to 50 percent on local-area Ethernet and Token Ring
- networks.
-
- Why: Because many customers rely on NetWare networks to run their
- businesses, improvements in networking performance and efficiency help
- to increase user productivity and reduce networking costs.
-
- How: NetWare's Burst Mode protocol allows a client to issue a single
- read or write request for blocks of data up to 64 kilobytes.
- Previously, a single request/response was required for each packet
- sent. Improvements in speed occur with the new Burst Mode protocol
- because the packets of data are now transmitted back-to-back without
- the need for acknowledgement.
-
- When: The Burst Mode protocol is now available through NetWare Express
- to customers who subscribe to Novell's NetWare Software Maintenance
- program. There is no charge for the Burst Mode protocol however,
- minimal connect charges do apply. The Burst Mode protocol is also a
- part of Novell's Multiprotocol Router and the recently announced
- NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows.
