Transcription: Before the British established colonies in the New World, Roman Catholic missionaries from Spain traveled there to convert Native Americans to their way of life. Between 1685 and 1823, at least 62 settlements were built in the areas claimed by Spain, from Florida to Northern California. Many missions were a failure with regard to the Native Americans because most of the tribes eventually succumbed to European diseases such as measles and smallpox.
