#1 Welcome to Inside Information ----------------------------- Inside Information is the UK directory of PC software and hardware: It's published on disk, updated monthly, and, for each product, lists references to all the reviews in the major computer press back over three years. It contains details on 6000 products from 2000 suppliers and lists over 20,000 references - all on a single disk. You can search for products by name, supplier or category, either by typing a keyword or by selecting from a list. To get help, at any time, press <F1>. Press <Esc> to clear this window and then press <F10> to access the menu. #2 How to select a menu option --------------------------- 1) Highlight the desired menu title (using the cursor keys) 2) Press <Enter> to drop the sub menu 3) Highlight the desired option and press <Enter> ----------------------------------------------------------------- OR Use first letters (e.g. <F10> <S> <P> for Software Packages) OR Use <Alt> as a hot key (e.g. <Alt-S> <P> for Software Packages) OR Press <Esc> to cancel . . . and remember, if in doubt, press <F1> #3 How to select an item --------------------- Use the cursor keys to highlight the item of interest and then press <Enter> to open a window on that item. For PCs the price is for a system comprising of a hard disk, one floppy, colour monitor, keyboard, mouse, DOS and Windows. The hard disk capacity appears in square brackets after the model name. For example, the "Amstrad PC 4386SX [80]" has an 80 MB hard disk. For portable PCs, we also specify the screen type: M - Mono C - Colour Where the price of a software package is for a multi-user licence, we show the number of users in square brackets after the name of the software package. For example, the price given for "NetWare 4.0 [5]" would be for a 5 user pack. #8 How to find a software package using a keyword search ----------------------------------------------------- Use the cursor keys to select the appropriate field, type the name of the publisher, package or category and press <Enter>. Press <Esc> to clear the field. o Keywords need only be a few characters. Examples: Publisher: "Lotus" "Borl" "Micro" Package: "123" "Para" "Window" Category: "Spread" "base" "Oper" o Searches are case insensitive. Characters other than letters and digits are ignored. o You may wish to list the categories, before searching by category. o Use <Home>, <End>, <BackSpace> and <Del> to edit a keyword. #9 How to find a hardware product using a keyword search ----------------------------------------------------- Use the cursor keys to select the appropriate field, type the name of the manufacturer, product or category and press <Enter>. Press <Esc> to clear the field. o Keywords need only be a few characters. Examples: Manufacturer: "IBM" "Packard" "Tosh" Product: "PS/2" "Jet" "T6600" Category: "PC" "Laser" "Portable" o Searches by manufacturer work best (e.g. "Amstrad" for "PC 2386"). o Searches are case insensitive.
