Wellington College, granted its Royal Charter in 1853 as a memorial to the Great Duke, was opened in 1859. It quickly became one of the great national boarding schools. The College is proud of a fine tradition of service and of its Royal connections. It stands in an attractive 400 acre woodland estate in Crowthorne, Berkshire; the buildings, as well as extensive playing fields, are all in the estate and within easy walking distance of each other. There are 750 boys (13 to 18 years) and 50 girls (16+ years), of whom about 150 are day pupils, many of whom become boarders as they advance up the school.
Wellington provides a well-disciplined, Christian framework within which pupils are provided with a wide range of opportunities to fulfil their personal potential. A sensible priority is given to academic study (98% of leavers go on to take degree courses) but the highest standards are also achieved in other aspects of school life, including sport, art, technology, writing, music and drama. Extra-curricular activities are important as they help develop self-confidence and provide valuable experience in team-work, initiative and leadership. The College is a school for enthusiasts who wish to make the most of their opportunities, both in and out of the classroom.
A particular strength of the College is the good relationships that exist between staff, pupils and parents. If you would like to find out more about Wellington, please come to visit us.
