  1. GT_HTML.DOT, (ver 0.1a1) Release Notice

  3. The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is pleased to announce the initial alpha release of  a set of Microsoft Word for 
  4. Windows macros to facilitate  HTML document authoring.  The macros are contained in a document template 
  5. (GT_HTML.DOT) which provides a pseudo  WYSIWYG authoring environment.

  8. What GT_HTML.DOT is NOT:

  10. This set of macros is not meant to be a complete authoring environment for creating multi-media extravaganzas .

  13. What GT_HTML.DOT is:
  14.  
  15. GT_HTML.DOT is meant to facilitate  creation of simple HTML documents.  Currently, GT_HTML.DOT supports the 
  16. creation of:
  17.  
  18. *    headings, 
  19. *    ordered and unordered lists, 
  20. *    hypertext anchors, 
  21. *    reformatted text, 
  22. *    in-lined graphics,  
  23. *    bold text, 
  24. *    italicized text, and 
  25. *    underlined text.

  27. Most functions are accessed through buttons on the toolbar.  For example, to create a level 1 heading, the heading text is 
  28. selected with the mouse, and the heading button is selected from the tool bar.  A window appears requesting the user select 
  29. a heading level with the aid of radio buttons.  The appropriate HTML tags are then inserted, and the text is increased in 
  30. size, as appropriate.  All HTML tags have WFW's hidden attribute, so they can be hidden  to give an approximation of 
  31. what the rendered document will look like.

  33. Initial experimentation has convinced us that such macros may be quite useful for creating simple documents.  We hope 
  34. that other WWW authors will find these macros  useful as well.

  36. GT_HTML.DOT may  be  obtained by ftp connection to our distribution point.  This page contains URLs to provide you 
  37. with some additional information and access to download files.

  39. All constructive comments, suggestions, and collaborative support is welcome.  As time permits we will accommodate 
  40. those that can be reasonably justified.  GTRI, however, does not intend to provide "hot-line" support, nor do we bond, 
  41. warrant, or otherwise guarantee the reliability or future functionality of this shareware product.

  47. GT_HTML.DOT Distribution Contents

  49. If you are reading this on your local machine you should have already down loaded the file gt_html.zip 
  50. and unziped it to be able to see this file.  If you are reading this via an on-line www client then you 
  51. should do the following:

  55. 1.    Down load the file gt_html.zip,
  56. 2.    Place it in a directory by itself,
  57. 3.    Unzip it using a pkunzip derivative,

  72. Notes on Potential Problems:
  73. "Nested" HTML tags may be a problem.  Simple nested text formatting, for example text that is both 
  74. bold and underlined, seems to work well.  However, more complex nesting, like hypertext links in a list, 
  75. have not been thoroughly tested.  Nested lists, in particular, are not yet supported.

  78. Notes on Future Plans:

  80. Future plans include:
  81. *    more robust error checking and protections,
  82. *    activation of hyper links between word documents, 
  83. *    "real" in-line graphics, 
  84. *    remove the requirement that all files "live" your ../winword directory,
  85. *    incorporate all fixes and improvements resulting for alpha testing provided by kind individuals such 
  86. as yourself,
  87. *    and other hopefully usefull features.

  90. Installing GT_HTML.DOT
  91.  
  92. Copy the file GT_HTML.DOT to your ../winword directory.  This will create a new document template called 
  93. "GT_HTML".  The new template should appear on the list of choices in the File New dialog box.  This template contains all the 
  94. conversion macros and a redefined Toolbar.  The template will automatically be activated when a document created with the template is opened.

  96. You should also copy the file HTMLINST.DOC and SAMPLPIC.BMP to your .../winword directory.  
  97. HTMLINST.DOC will allow you to open an instruction document from the "?" button on the Toolbar.  
  98. SAMPLPIC.BMP serves as a "place marker" for inlined graphics.

  100. HTMLINST.DOC is also a stand-alone Word for Windows document.  You may want to print this document for quick 
  101. reference.

  103. WE INTEND TO REMOVE THE .../winword DIRECTORY REQUIREMENT IN A FUTURE RELEASE.

  117. Bold, Italic, and Underlined TextBold, italic, and underlined text should be 
  118. marked using the standard Word formatting commands.  They will be converted 
  119. to HTML automatically.

  121. Headings

  123. Text to be converted to a heading should be selected with the mouse.  Click the 
  124. "H" button on the Toolbar with the mouse.  A dialog box will appear, requesting 
  125. you to select the heading level.  Make the appropriate selection, and click on 
  126. "OK".  The text will increase proportionately in size, and be surrounded by the 
  127. appropriate HTML tags.  The tags have the Hidden attribute.

  130. Lists
  131.  
  132. Numbered and Bulleted Lists are supported.  Text to be converted to a list 
  133. should be selected with the mouse.  Click either the "Numbered List" or the 
  134. "Bulleted List" button on the Toolbar with the mouse.
  135. Each paragraph in the selected text is converted to a list item.  HTML list tags 
  136. are inserted, and tags have the hidden attribute.

  139. Hypertext Links
  140.  
  141. Hypertext links are created from selected text in the following way.  The last 
  142. continuous string of text in the selection (i.e. no spaces) is interpreted as the 
  143. URL.  All preceding text is interpreted as the hypertext link.  For example, the 
  144. word "here" in the following sentence is a hypertext link to

  161. Finally, a click on the "L" (for Link) button on the Toolbar will convert the 
  162. selection to an HTML hypertext link.  HTML tags will be inserted in red, and will 
  163. have the Hidden attribute.

  166. Converting a Document to HTML
  167.  
  168. When you are ready to convert your document to HTML format, select the "C" 
  169. (for Convert and save) button from the toolbar.  Your Word document will 
  170. automatically be saved before making an HTML conversion!  A lot of file 
  171. swapping goes on during the conversion process, and your changes could get 
  172. lost without this automatic save.  If you're not sure about current changes to your 
  173. document, use Save As... to create a working copy before making the HTML 
  174. conversion.

  176. You will be prompted for a filename for the HTML document.  The default is the 
  177. current filename, with the extension ".htm".  Simply press [Enter] to accept the 
  178. default filename.  Note:  an intermediate form of the document is created is your 
  179. Word directory called "@HMLTEMP.DOC".  Currently, this file is saved for 
  180. debugging purposes.  After the conversion is complete, you will be returned to 
  181. the original document.

  184. Entering In-line Graphics

  186. Highlight the graphic's filename and click on the "G" button on the Toolbar.  The 
  187. proper HTML tag will be inserted, and a "dummy" graphic will be inserted to 
  188. approximate what the rendered document will look like.

  191. Help on the HTML Toolbar Buttons

  193. Selecting the "?" button from the toolbar will invoke a window showing a brief 
  194. reminder of the functions of the Toolbar buttons.  Clicking on the "Open 
  195. Instruction Document" button in this window will open a document giving more 
  196. detailed help.
