  8. What Is This For?
  9. ===============
  10. These applications are ResCompare resource patching applications. 
  11. Applying the appropriate patch to a COPY OF YOUR  ORIGINAL ("virgin") 
  12. MacTCP or MacTCP Admin control panel will upgrade your copy to version 2.0.6.
  13.  
  14. Apple has selected this technology because it allows us to ensure a highly
  15. predictable update process, thus improving the reliability of the overall 
  16. upgrade.
  17.  
  18. Apple has created the updaters to work only on an unmodifed copy of the 
  19. original software in order to promote updating only of properly licensed
  20. copies of MacTCP software. While we recognize that this can be somewhat
  21. of a hassle, we think that is a much better approach that a mail-in
  22. proof-of-purchase and wait for the diskette in the mail kind of upgrades that
  23. have often been done in the past.

  25. What Can Be Upgraded?
  26. ====================
  27. All licensed copies of MacTCP 2.0.2 or MacTCP 2.0.4 can be upgraded.

  29. What About System 7.5 Users?
  30. ===========================
  31. Apple plans to upgrade MacTCP for System 7.5 users through the soon-to-be-
  32. released System Update 4.0. This will include MacTCP 2.0.6 updates along with
  33. other recommended software upgrades for System 7.5 users.
  34.  
  35. For those of you who just can't wait to get MacTCP upgraded, some additional 
  36. care will be required to use these patchers. In particular, you must take steps
  37. to re-install a "virgin" copy of MacTCP from your Sytem 7.5 distribution media.
  38. The specifics of this will vary depending on whether you have System 7.5 on
  39. floppy or CD.
  40.  
  41. For CD users, you will need to drag a copy of MacTCP from the CD to your
  42. desktop, use the correct patcher to update the copy, and then replace the
  43. older version in your System Folder with the updated version.
  44.  
  45. For floppy users, you will will need to do a custom install and select MacTCP
  46. only. Then, reboot _with extensions off_, run the correct version of the patcher,
  47. and finally reboot with extensions on. 
  48.  
  49. What Cannot Be Upgraded?
  50. =======================
  51. Any other version of MacTCP 2.x (i.e, 2.0.1... 2.0.3... 2.0.5…), any MacTCP
  52. alpha, beta, or development version, or any version of MacTCP v1.x may not
  53. be upgraded.
  54.  
  55. What's The Difference?
  56. ====================
  57. The changes between MacTCP 2.0.4 and MacTCP 2.0.6 are described in the
  58. Release Notes document.

  60. MacTCP 2.0.5 was an interim release, only distributed internally at Apple.
