  3. ˜®öÆ2®“ <p>The development of this site, and the associated software being 
  4. used to create and maintain it, started on <i> Saturday 12th-Oct-96</i>.
  5. I had the idea in the morning, sketched out some preliminary plans,
  6. ran a few ARexx test scripts in the afternoon, and by early evening
  7. a small test site was up and running on Compuserve's ourworld server.
  8. The following day I extended the ideas to allow additional files to
  9. be automatically pulled into the Web pages as they are created. And I
  10. wrote the date stamp extraction code that allows the generator script
  11. to determine when pages have been updated. One day after that, the 
  12. Monday, a skeleton framework containing over fifty pages was up and 
  13. running. Needless to say it's going to take a while to get the site 
  14. up to scratch content-wise, but already it's clear (at least as far 
  15. as I am concerned) that Webbing is far more enjoyable if you can 
  16. eliminate the trivial (but still time consuming) tasks of building 
  17. menu links, inserting page titles, checking that menu items and 
  18. page titles correspond and so on.</p>

  20. <p>I'm convinced that such automation methods are the only sensible way 
  21. to go. I am also aware, incidentally, that there is now increasing general 
  22. awareness of the usefulness of automated site tools. Microsoft for example
  23. have recently added site development facilities with their latest 
  24. Visual SourceSafe system. I've not yet seen it but apparently it can 
  25. check for broken page links and so on. Doubtless the software is 
  26. good although my immediate reaction is that perhaps there is a flaw 
  27. in the basic 'link checking' argument. Surely, if you let the computer 
  28. create the links in the first place then you would never be in a 
  29. position to have to fix them anyway! Having said that we ought to 
  30. remember that 'good old Bill' didn't get here he is today  without 
  31. being right about a few things - so chances are it's me that's 
  32. out of step here!</p>

  34. <p>I'm just following my own pathway at this site. Firstly, for fun... 
  35. and secondly for the hell of it. So far it's cost me nothing but a few 
  36. hours of my time - and the total ARexx software being used for all 
  37. site management (originally around 4K) is, with various indexing and
  38. date stamping enhancments, still LESS THAN 8K. The basic coding 
  39. principles are not even hard to understand so why on earth there 
  40. should, in general, be this ever increasing drive to have megabytes 
  41. of ready-made software around to solve what are essentially trivial 
  42. structuring problems God only knows! Such thoughts, <i>surely</i>, have 
  43. got to count for something in the great scheme of things - and I'm pretty 
  44. sure that there are plenty of other Webbers who feel similarly about 
  45. these issues!</p>
