  10. <font size=4><b>Upgrading</b>
  11. <p>RAM upgrades are fairly quick and easy to do.  It is one of the few quick,
  12. easy upgrades you can do that will immediately improve the performance of
  13. your PC.
  14.  
  15. <p>Here it is, in 5 easy steps:
  16. <ol>
  17. <li>Turn off your PC, unplug it and remove its cover.  Find out: what type of
  18. memory slots are on your motherboard, the speed of your memory, and its capacity.
  19. <ol><p>Your manual also should provide this information, and tell you the maximum
  20. amount of memory your motherboard can handle.</ol></li>
  21. <li>Check to see if you have any empty memory slots.  If you have empty slots:
  22. <ol><p>Determine how much you RAM you can add.  Keep the following rules in mind:
  23. <p>Rule 1:  Your PC organizes the memory slots into
  24. </FONT><A HREF="glo: bank"><FONT SIZE=5>banks</FONT></A><font size=4>.  You
  25. must fill the bank completely, or leave it empty.  You can not leave it half
  26. full.
  27. <p>Rule 2:  You can not mix different capacity SIMMs in the same bank.</ol>
  28. <p>If you do not have empty slots:
  29. <ol><p>You may be able to add more RAM by removing the existing SIMMs from
  30. the motherboard and adding higher capacity SIMMs.</ol></li>
  31. <li>Purchase the correct RAM from your local computer store.  Don't forget,
  32. same speed, same parity.</li>
  33. <li>Install the new memory into the appropriate memory slot.
  34. <ol>
  35. <p>SIMMs/DIMMs:  Align the notched end of the SIMM with the notched end of the
  36. memory slot.  Gently push the SIMM into the memory slot.  Tip the SIMM slowly
  37. until it locks into place.
  38.  
  39. <p>SIPPs:  Align the notched end of the SIPP with the notched end of the
  40. memory slot.  Align the SIPP's pins with the memory slot and gently push the
  41. SIPP into place.
  42.  
  43. <p>DIPs:  Align the notched end of the DIP with the notched end of the
  44. memory slot.  Align the DIP's pins with the memory slot and gently push the
  45. DIP into place. Continue adding DIPs until the row is filled.

  47. <ol><p>You may need to change certain
  48. </FONT><A HREF="glo: dip switche"><FONT SIZE=5>dip switches</FONT></A><font size=4>
  49. or
  50. </FONT><A HREF="glo: jumper"><FONT SIZE=5>jumpers</FONT></A><font size=4>
  51. on the motherboard so the PC can recognize the memory change.  Check your
  52. manual for details.</ol></ol></li>

  54. <li>Replace your PC's cover, plug it in, and turn it on.</li>
