  1.     A couple of more confusing things have been brought to my attention:

  3.     (1) bms-manager alias
  4.  
  5.     The BMS system must somehow inform you when something gets done.
  6.     For example, you request a file and the file is returned after
  7.     a couple of days.
  8.  
  9.     BMS informs you by sending *local* mail to the user 'bms-manager'.
  10.     Normally, you will want to make an alias in your UULIB:Aliases file
  11.     to point this to your primary mail box.  For example, if your
  12.     primary mailbox is 'johnt' then UULIB:Aliases would contain:

  14.     bms-manager: johnt
  15.  
  16.     (2) Current state of registrations and the BMS ALIAS command.
  17.  
  18.     I am up to 11 people registered.  So far
  19.  
  20.     Now, this brings up an additional point -- all these people have
  21.     registered with me, does this mean that I can GET files from
  22.     them?  The answer is, YES.  I do not have to register with them
  23.     if they are already registered with me.

  25.     However, note that there are no aliases (on my side) for these
  26.     remote registrations.  To make GETting things easier I want
  27.     to make an alias for those sites I wish to get stuff from.  So,
  28.     for example, I made an alias for uunet.uu.net!...!amiga0 like this:

  30.     1> BMS D=uunet.uu.net!uunet!ub-gate.UB.com!zorch!amiga0 ALIAS amiga0

  32.     That way if I want to get things from Mike S. I can simply say
  33.     something like:

  35.     1> BMS D=amiga0 GET bms:pub/files TO tmp:amiga0.files

  37.     The BMS ALIAS command should not be confused with the bms-manager
  38.     alias, they are two different things.
  39.  
  40.     (3) Lastly, I am *almost* ready with the 1.16 release.  Since I have
  41.     given up trying to keep my uunet costs down I will distribute the
  42.     whole thing via BMS and post just the binaries to
  43.     alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches.  I will post a message to
  44.     alt.sys.amiga.uucp when all this stuff is ready to go.

  46.     I will lharc various sub directories and put them in a directory
  47.     hierarchy, allowing BMS people to simply get everything by
  48.     requesting the root of the directory tree, or get specific items.
  49.  
  50.     Everything except hardlinks are in.  Hardlinks may or may not make
  51.     it.  Personally, I'd rather leave them out so as to ensure that
  52.     1.16 is the most reliable release and, hopefully, avoid the fiasco
  53.     that occured with 1.15 !!!

  55.     (4) SUBNET MANAGERS
  56.  
  57.     Subnet managers, if 50 people on your subnet request something from
  58.     me note that bandwidth will still be limited to 100K/day overall
  59.     outgoing from my node.

  61.     This restriction on outgoing email does not, of course, reduce the
  62.     overall data transmitted.  What it does do is spread out large
  63.     transfers thus preventing an overload, and give people who screw up
  64.     things (request more then they can chew) enough time to dequeue the
  65.     request without too much damage occuring.
