- A couple of more confusing things have been brought to my attention:
-
- (1) bms-manager alias
-
- The BMS system must somehow inform you when something gets done.
- For example, you request a file and the file is returned after
- a couple of days.
-
- BMS informs you by sending *local* mail to the user 'bms-manager'.
- Normally, you will want to make an alias in your UULIB:Aliases file
- to point this to your primary mail box. For example, if your
- primary mailbox is 'johnt' then UULIB:Aliases would contain:
-
- bms-manager: johnt
-
- (2) Current state of registrations and the BMS ALIAS command.
-
- I am up to 11 people registered. So far
-
- Now, this brings up an additional point -- all these people have
- registered with me, does this mean that I can GET files from
- them? The answer is, YES. I do not have to register with them
- if they are already registered with me.
-
- However, note that there are no aliases (on my side) for these
- remote registrations. To make GETting things easier I want
- to make an alias for those sites I wish to get stuff from. So,
- for example, I made an alias for uunet.uu.net!...!amiga0 like this:
-
- 1> BMS D=uunet.uu.net!uunet!ub-gate.UB.com!zorch!amiga0 ALIAS amiga0
-
- That way if I want to get things from Mike S. I can simply say
- something like:
-
- 1> BMS D=amiga0 GET bms:pub/files TO tmp:amiga0.files
-
- The BMS ALIAS command should not be confused with the bms-manager
- alias, they are two different things.
-
- (3) Lastly, I am *almost* ready with the 1.16 release. Since I have
- given up trying to keep my uunet costs down I will distribute the
- whole thing via BMS and post just the binaries to
- alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches. I will post a message to
- alt.sys.amiga.uucp when all this stuff is ready to go.
-
- I will lharc various sub directories and put them in a directory
- hierarchy, allowing BMS people to simply get everything by
- requesting the root of the directory tree, or get specific items.
-
- Everything except hardlinks are in. Hardlinks may or may not make
- it. Personally, I'd rather leave them out so as to ensure that
- 1.16 is the most reliable release and, hopefully, avoid the fiasco
- that occured with 1.15 !!!
-
- (4) SUBNET MANAGERS
-
- Subnet managers, if 50 people on your subnet request something from
- me note that bandwidth will still be limited to 100K/day overall
- outgoing from my node.
-
- This restriction on outgoing email does not, of course, reduce the
- overall data transmitted. What it does do is spread out large
- transfers thus preventing an overload, and give people who screw up
- things (request more then they can chew) enough time to dequeue the
- request without too much damage occuring.
