- HOW AWESOME IS OBLITERATOR
-
- Here's what some people have said about this revolutionary video gaming
- experience:
-
- "A revolutionary video gaming experience."
-
- "My co-workers told me to try this new game called Obliterator, and well,
- so I did, and would you believe, after my first game my boss walked into
- my office and gave me a generous raise, and to top it all off, he gave
- me the rest of the day off."
-
- "Obliterator has been scientifically proven to fight lockjaw."
- -Dr B Bighoncho
-
- "I'm 84 years old and after my grandson introduced Obliterator to me and
- the ladies at our weekly bridge game, we've stopped playing bridge. Now,
- every saturday, we have our weekly Obliterator competition."
-
- "A masterpiece in computer entertainment. (99%)"
- -PC Game Freak Magazine.
-
- "My whole family just loves your game. Punishing Putputs, Butchering
- Biggles, and Slaughtering Sykobobs, it's just so much fun."
-
- "Your game is a lifesaver. Shortly after playing Obliterator for the
- first time, my hair grew back. After 20 years of baldness, I feel like
- a new man."
-
- "I just formatted the rest of my hard drive because Obliterator is the
- only game I'll ever need."
-
- "Obliterate! Obliterate!! Obliterate!!!!!!!"

- SYSTEM THINGS
-
- You need a minimum of a 486DX2-66 because that's what I programmed it on.
- It might work on something less, who knows? Sound Blaster compatible sound
- is supported, but only if the game auto-detects it. This shouldn't really
- be a problem. If the game crashes or blows up on you, e-mail me and let me
- know just how backwards your system is and what the problem is; I might even
- try to fix it. (Spiffy, a semi-colon.)
-
- Obliterator command line options:
- s+ sound on
- s- sound off
- m+ music on
- m- music off
- p<path> sets path for MODs
- help you're looking at it
- All options will be saved.
-
- As far as music is concerned, the game will play a random MOD file from the
- current directory (or whatever the MOD path is) at the start of each game.
- I just added MOD support at the last minute and it turns out that with music
- on, the game can get rather choppy. So, therefore, ergo, if the game gets
- rather choppy, try turning the music off.

- STORY
-
- Just like every other thursday you are cruising home from origami lessons in
- your Superflameout/turboX1-OBLiTERATOR space cruisemobile. You turn onto
- 39th space-avenue and suddenly you reel. Before your very eyes, your entire
- neighborhood turns into a black void with a big brown meteor right where your
- house used to be. Off in the distance you see a strange looking green space
- ship making a horrendous farting noise heading towards you. Sensing something
- out of the ordinary, you glance at your Which-Universe-Am-I-In-Meter and to
- your horror it reads: Not The Right One! As the green ship gets closer you
- realize that it's too ugly to be from your universe and if it's not from your
- universe, it must be obliterated! One shot from your Lepton-Cannon blows the
- hideous thing to smithereens. As bits of green debris fly past your
- windshield, you hear a voice in your head say: "You did well young warrior,
- that's worth 50 points." You smile and think to yourself: If I'm gonna get
- home, The only sensible way would be to obliterate everything I see.
-
-
- HOW TO PLAY
-
- Keyboard Mouse What it does
- ---------- ----------- -------------
- Left Arrow Mouse Left rotate left
- Right Arrow Mouse Right rotate right
- Up Arrow Left Button thrust
- CTRL Right Button shoot primary weapon
- ALT Middle Button shoot secondary weapon
-
- P pauses and ESC quits
- sorry, there's no strafing
-
- The little number in the top right is your sykometer, the bigger it is, the
- more points you get for killing things. eg. Killing a PutPut when your
- sykometer reads x10 will give you 50 points, at x40 you get 200 points.
- Simple huh? So what steps can one take to make sure ones sykometer is as
- high as possible and therefore gain as many points as possible? Kill. The
- faster you kill things the more your sykometer will rise. But your sykometer
- will drop if you're not killing fast enough. Kill fast. Once your sykometer
- reaches x100 your ship will burst into a ball of flames, not a bad ball of
- flames, but a good ball of flames! Your ship will repair itself to maximum
- and become invincible for a short time. Your weapons will be disabled, but
- anything you bump into will be destroyed. This is sort of like a bonus round
- between levels (maybe I should have worked this into the story somehow).
- After that, your ship will change colors and you'll be on the next level with
- bigger uglier aliens. After the sixth level you get back to the first level
- but things will generally be more difficult, there will be more aliens and it
- will be tougher to keep your sykometer up.
-
- The evil aliens whose world you invaded:
- Wait for a few seconds on the title screen and you'll get a preview of all
- the aliens and what their gall bladders are worth on the black market.
-
- Every now and then a truck will come haplessly passing by. They don't much
- like the aliens either (for political reasons) and might help you out by
- dropping off goodies for your ship.
- Primary weapons (blue)
- - 3-Way Triple your fun with a 3-way gun
- - Laser Hold the button down, no more finger cramps!
- - Flametoaster Cook aliens like marshmallows
- - Plasma What the hell is this stuff?
- - Forcebolt Try shooting meteors with this puppy
- Secondary weapons (red)
- - Missiles Alien seeking. Guaranteed to kill something
- - Magnoblast Notice how alot of the aliens like getting close to you?
- - Shield Prevents all damage when turned on
- - Zuprthruzt Makes you go extra extra fast, not always a good idea
- Trucks don't appreciate being blown up.

- HISTORY OF OBLITERATOR (1650-1789)
-
- Just so you have a better idea of how this monumentous game came into
- existence, the history of the creation of Obliterator:
-
- April 7 1996 - the construction begins.
-
- June 13 - PutPut routine added.
-
- Aug 20 - fixed a bug.
-
- Oct 6 - Obliterator is complete.
-
-
- WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS GAME?
-
- This game is shareware. What is shareware? Well, this is a perfect example
- of what shareware is.
- - You are legally entitled to play Obliterator for a period of no more
- than 35 seconds. After which, you have two choices, either permanently
- erase the game, or pay the registration fee of $129. This might seem a
- bit expensive for shareware, but it is cheaper than a lot of business
- applications.
-
- Seriously now, Obliterator is freeware. What is freeware? Well, freeware
- means that you are free to wear Obliterator for as long as you want, whenever
- you want, wherever you want.
- - You are free to give this game to anyone else who wants to wear it.
- - You are also free to upload this game to your favorite and next most
- favorite BBS so that other people around the non-communist world can
- wear this fine game.
- - Just don't go screwing around with it.
-
- E-mail me! my address is:

-
- - This is so anyone with any suggestions, or knows of any bugs, or wants
- to give a no-obligation consultation can contact the brilliant author
- of Obliterator.
- - Suggestions for new enemies and things are welcome, but don't be
- expectin' somethin' happenin' with 'em.
- - Obliterator will amazingly run under Windows, but you need the file
- obliteratorulzdude.dll in your directory. If you don't already have
- this file, it can be downloaded from almost anywhere.
- - This game is 100% bug free. If you find any bugs, which you will not,
- it's obviously due to your misuse of the game.
- - If you know who Biggles is, please tell me.
-
- I'd like to thank:
- - Themie Gouthas and everyone else who contributed to Xlib, the awesome
- and free mode-x graphics library that allowed me to use square pixels
- and screw clipping.
- - Eric Jorgensen and Mr. Varmint for their doubleplusgood sound library,
- VAT (Varmint's Audio Tools).
- - Whoever wrote the MODs that I included.
-
-
- TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- If you see trouble, shoot it.
