- 1. Computer Configuration and Operating System
-
- "Small, Old and New Hermitage" program will run on any IBM PC (286, 386
- or 486) and compatibles with the following minimum hardware specification:
-
- - RAM not less than 1MB (384KB Extended memory with HIMEM.SYS driver);
- - 10 MB of free hard disk space for the VGA version and
- 15 MB of free hard disk space for the SVGA version;
- - 3.5" (1.44 MB) or 5.25" (1.2 MB) FDD - depending on source floppy type;
- - mouse (optional, but strongly recommended);
- - any VGA or SuperVGA card for the VGA version
- or
- SuperVGA card with one of the following SVGA chip sets:

- ATI Wonder
- Chips & Technology
- Cirrus Logic CL-GD542X
- OAK
- Prisma
- S3 86C801/805
- S3 86C911/924
- S3 86C928
- Trident 8800
- Trident 8900
- Tseng 3000
- Tseng 4000

- for the SVGA version.

- Operating system: MS-DOS v.3.30 or higher (HIMEM.SYS required).
-
- At the program startup there should be at least 480 KB of conventional
- memory plus 300 KB of extended memory free.
-

- 2. Setup and running the program
-
- 2.1 To install the program, insert floppy Disk #1 in the floppy disk drive,
- make this drive current, type: SETUP, and then follow the SETUP prompts.
-
- 2.2 The SETUP file uses the C: drive and directory HERMS as the default
- for transfering files from floppy to hard disk. If you want to change target
- drive or directory, please insert new names.
-
- 2.3 About 15 MB of free hard disk space are needed for SVGA full version
- installation (10 MB for VGA full version, 3 MB for the VGA demo and 5Mb for
- the SVGA demo). If you don't have enough space you can install the program
- partially, but not all of the program's images will be available for viewing
- in this case. A minimum of 5 MB of free disk space are required for partial
- installation of the VGA and the 5.25" SVGA versions and 5.7 MB for the 3.5"
- SVGA version.

- You can continue installation after increasing free space on your hard
- drive. To do this - run SETUP again from Disk #1 and start loading the program
- from the appropriate disk in accordance with the SETUP prompts.

- 2.4 If the Program does not install properly, first remedy the conflict then
- run SETUP again from Disk #1, following its instructions. You can continue
- installation starting from any diskette.
-
- 2.5 To run the program, make the directory where "Small, Old and New
- Hermitage" resides current and type: HERMS.
-
- 2.6 If you would like to run Small, Old and New Hermitage in Windows you have
- been provide with a program information file (.PIF) and an icon file (.ICO)
- in your main Small, Old and New Hermitage directory.
- To setup Small, Old and New Hermitage in Windows do the following:
-
- 1) Select the FILE option from your Window's Program Manager.
- 2) Select NEW from the FILE menu.
- 3) Select PROGRAM ITEM and choose OK to get the Program Item Properties box.
- 4) In the DESCRIPTION box type the program name, "The Hermitage, Vol.IV"
- for example.
- 5) In the COMMAND LINE box type the full path name of the HERMS.PIF file,
- C:\HERMS\HERMS.PIF for example. Choose the BROWSE option if you don't
- remember where the HERMS.PIF file resides.
- 6) Select the CHANGE ICON box and choose OK when warning message pops up.
- 7) In the FILE NAME box type the full path name of the HERMS.ICO file,
- C:\HERMS\HERMS.ICO for example. Choose the BROWSE option if you don't
- remember where the HERMS.ICO file resides.
- 8) Select OK twice to accept the icon and exit the PROGRAM ITEM PROPERTIES box.
- 9) To start the program from Windows double click the mouse on the
- Small, Old and New Hermitage icon.

- Warning: Running Small, Old and New Hermitage through Windows may slow down
- the program's response time.

- 3. General Instructions
-
- 3.1 You can move the cursor by mouse or with the keyboard arrow keys.
-
- 3.2 You can select an object (image, text reference or screen button)
- by pointing the cursor to the object and pressing the left mouse button
- or the Enter key.
-
- 3.3 To view a screen button description move the cursor to it and press
- the right mouse button. To remove the button description press mouse button
- or any key.
- To get Help for any screen, press the F1 key or move the cursor to the
- Help button and press the left mouse button or the ENTER key. To remove the
- Help message, move the cursor to the CANCEL button and press the left mouse
- button or ENTER key.

- 4. Working with the program
-
- 4.1 Main Menu
-
- The first screen to appear after you type HERMS will be the logo screen.
- Press any key to continue. The Main Menu will appear on the screen.
- The Main Menu consists of screen buttons under the Leonardo da Vinci Hall
- of the Old (Big) Hermitage Palace.

- The following button descriptions are either left to right or top to
- bottom:
-
- "Book" - enter the Book Mode
- "Setup" - enter the Screen Setup Mode
- "Map" - enter the Map Mode
- "Topics" - enter the Topics Mode
- "Autoshow" - run Automatic Show
- "Russian" - changes to Russian dialogs
- "English" - changes to English dialogs
- "Exit" - Exit the program
- "Help" - get Help

- You can proceed with the program in any way, but we recommend you first
- select the language and then adjust both the screen color and intensity via
- the Screen Setup Mode.

- 4.2 Screen Setup
-
- After you press the Setup button of the Main Menu an image and a set of
- buttons appear on the screen. Using "-" or "+" screen buttons you can adjust
- the image by the following parameters as you like:
-
- "red" - increase or decrease red color
- "green" - increase or decrease green color
- "blue" - increase or decrease blue color
- "intensity"- increase or decrease intensity
-
- You can save the current screen adjustments by using the Save button, or
- restore default values using the Restore button.
-
- To return to the Main Menu use the Main Menu button (decorated with double
- up arrows).
-
- In any mode you can adjust screen palette using functional keys:
-
- F2 - increase red color
- F3 - decrease red color
- F4 - increase green color
- F5 - decrease green color
- F6 - increase blue color
- F7 - decrease blue color
- F8 - increase intensity
- F9 - decrease intensity
- F10 - restore original pallete

- 4.3 The Book Mode
-
- When you press the Book button in the Main Menu two windows appear - the
- text window and the illustration window.
-
- There are buttons under the text windows.
-
- 4.3.1 Buttons in the Book Mode
-
- Buttons in the first row:
-
- "Next Page" - go to the next page (if any)
- "Previous Page" - go to the previous page (if any)
- "Previous Screen" - return to the previous chapter (if any)
-
- Buttons in the second row:
-
- "Main Menu"- return to the Main Menu
- "Map" - enter the Map Mode
- "Help" - get Help
- "Index" - go to the Index
-
- 4.3.2 Index
-
- While in the Book Mode you can read all chapters one by one, using text
- references, or you can use the Index to select any chapter you desire.
-
- The index consists of numbered text references. You can select any of them
- using the "Next Page" or "Previous Page" buttons to change the Index pages.
-
- To select a chapter, point the cursor to its title in the Index and press
- the left mouse button or the Enter key.
-
- The appropriate text appears in the text window with the image in the
- illustration window.
-
- 4.3.3 Working with a chapter
-
- While reading the text, you can select a new image for the illustration
- window if there is a orange reference to the image in the text. Brown
- references in the text or at the end of the chapter will allow you to
- select additional related text and illustrations, or proceed to the next
- chapter. You can do this by pointing the cursor on the the reference and
- pressing the left mouse button or the Enter key.
- When there aren't any brown references in the chapter you can return
- to the previous chapter by selecting the "Previous Screen" button.

- Using the buttons described in the section 4.3.1, you can select pages,
- go to the Index, enter the Map Mode or return to the Main Menu.

- 4.3.4 Working with an image
-
- By pointing the cursor to an image and pressing the left mouse button
- or the Enter key, you can select a full image on the screen.
- This image can be manipulated by using the appropriate screen buttons
- as described in Section 4.6.

- 4.4 Map mode
-
- When you press the Map button in the Main Menu or in other modes, a scheme
- of the Small, Old and New Hermitage appears on the screen.
- This screen displays action buttons as well as a small image of the
- current hall and its name. If you are entering from an image of one of the
- halls of Small, Old and New Hermitage, that hall is highlighted in red and
- a small image of it is displayed.
- You can change the current hall by pointing the cursor to the hall on the
- map and pressing the left mouse button or the Enter key.

- 4.4.1 Action buttons
-
- "Main Menu" - return to the Main Menu
- "1st floor" - 1st floor Map
- "2nd floor" - 2nd floor Map
- "Help" - Help

- 4.4.2 Working with an image
-
- By placing the cursor on an image in the small window and pressing the
- left mouse button or the Enter key you can select a full image. This
- image can be manipulated by using the appropriate screen buttons as
- described in section 4.6.
-
- 4.5 Topics Mode
-
- When you press the Topic button in the Main Menu three screen panels
- appear:
-
- left panel - three Slide rows
- right panel - topics Index
- bottom panel - two rows of buttons
-
- The slides on the left panel represent the most important six topics of
- the history of the Small, Old and New Hermitage. The Name and Slide of the
- current topic is highlighted by an orange frame.

- 4.5.1 Working with topics
-
- You can proceed through the topics sequentially, one by one, or directly
- as you like.
- To do this, point the cursor to the slide or to the appropriate topic name
- in the topics Index and press the left mouse button or the Enter key.
- After you select the topic, up to nine new slides for this topic appear in
- the left panel.
- The current slide of the current topic and its description are highlighted
- by an orange frame.
- There is also a short description of the current topic in the right panel.

- 4.5.2 Action buttons
-
- First row buttons:
-
- "Previous" - go to the previous topic
- "Next" - go to the next topic
- "Main Menu" - return to the Main Menu
-
- Second row buttons:
-
- "Help" - get Help
- "Index" - return to the Topics Index
-
- 4.5.3 Working with a slide
-
- By pointing the cursor to the selected slide and pressing the left mouse
- button or the Enter key, you can make it current. If you point the cursor
- to the current slide and press the left mouse button or the Enter key again,
- you can enlarge the image and manipulate it as described in the Section 4.6.

- 4.6 Working with a full image
-
- You can enter the Full Image Mode from any of three other modes:
- Book, Map or Topic.
-
- To enter this mode, place the cursor on a small image (illustration window
- in the Book, small image in the Map or to any slide in the Topic mode) and
- press the left mouse button or the Enter key.
-
- A full image window with a column of action buttons will appear.
-
- Action buttons:
-
- "Book" - Go to the chapter of the Book related to the current image.
-
- "Map" - Enter the Map Mode. If the current Full Image is one of
- The Small, Old and New Hermitage halls you'll get the
- appropriate floor map. For any other images you will enter
- the 2nd floor map of the Map Mode.
-
- "Lens" - Select any detail of the image and enlarge it in the special
- window. You must point the cursor to the required part of the
- screen and press the left mouse button or the Enter key. If
- you point the cursor to the enlargement Window and repeat
- pressing the left mouse button or the Enter key, you can
- enlarge the detail as many times as you want. To cancel this
- mode, press this button again or press the "Cancel" button.

- "Zoom" - Divides the screen into two parts, places the current image
- in the left half of the screen and a 2X's enlargement to the
- right. Select any possible direction (from top to bottom,
- side to side or diagonally) and press the appropriate button
- to start movement of the image in the "Zoom" window. To stop
- movement, click the left mouse button or press any key.
- Select the Cancel button to exit from the Zoom Mode.

- "Panorama" - Displays the Panoramic view of the current full image.
- Select any possible direction (from top to bottom,
- side to side or diagonally) and press the appropriate button
- to start movement of the image. To stop movement, click the
- left mouse button.
- Select the Main menu button to exit from the Panorama Mode.

- "Information" - Get information about the whole image and about the defined
- objects of the image (after pressing Next Object Button).
- To remove this information, press this button again or press
- the "Cancel" button.
-
- "Next Object" - Shows the next defined objects of the image which have
- additional information. To retrieve this additional
- information select the Information Button then select
- the Next Object Button. A special cursor will identify
- the next object and its description will be displayed.
- To exit the Information mode press the Information button
- again or press the Cancel screen button.

- "Only Image" - Removes all but the Full image from the screen. You can
- display the image icon bar by pressing any key.
-
- "Next" - Active only if you enter the Full Image Mode from the Topic
- Mode. In this case, it allows you to retrieve the next Full
- Image of this topic.

- "Previous" - Active only if you enter the Full Image Mode from the Topic
- Mode. In this case, it allows you to retrieve the previous
- Full Image of this topic.

- "Cancel" - Cancels the previous mode selected by any other screen
- buttons.
-
- "Help" - Displays a Help screen. Pressing F1 will also display this
- screen. Select the Cancel button to remove this screen.

- 4.7 Auto Show
-
- You can run the program in the Automatic Mode by using this screen button
- from the Main Menu. You can interrupt the Auto Show and exit to the Main Menu
- at any time by using the Esc key.
-
- You can pause the Auto Show at any time by pressing any key except Esc.
- To continue the show, press any key.

- 5. Help
-
- Help is available in each mode by selecting the Help button or pressing
- F1. You can remove the Help text from the screen by using the Cancel screen
- button.

- 6. Exit the program
-
- You can exit the program by using the Exit screen button in the Main Menu.
- Information about the authors and the last cover appears. Press any key to
- clear these screens, or wait for the screens to clear automatically. If you
- wish to pause these screens, press the PAUSE button on your keyboard.
