  13. THE TIMELAPSE STORY - HOW IT ALL BEGINS
  14. It's been a long day. When you arrive home the red message light is flashing
  15. on your answering machine. You press play....
  16.  
  17.     "I know I can count on you. You're the only one I trust.
  18.  
  19.     All my life I've believed there's a link between the ancient civilizations
  20.     of the Egyptians, Maya, the Anasazi, and the lost city of Atlantis.
  21.  
  22.     For the past 20 years I've traveled the globe in search of Atlantis.
  23.     Through it all I've endured the endless ridicule of my colleagues.
  24.     Now, finally, I've found that missing link.
  25.  
  26.     On Easter Island I've discovered what appears to be some sort of
  27.     alien device. In it, I can see worlds from the past, brilliant scenes
  28.     flowing by like clouds. Whatever it is, it definitely is not man made.
  29.  
  30.     If I am right, and this device is a time gate, then this may be the
  31.     greatest archaeological discovery of all time.
  32.  
  33.     Tomorrow I'll attempt to activate the time portal and go through it.
  34.     I don't know what will happen to me when I try this.
  35.  
  36.     Please, hurry, I need your help. You must come at once to Easter Island.
  37.  
  38.     You're the only one I trust."

  40. Now, on Easter Island, in the present day, you set off to uncover a mystery
  41. that takes you through four ancient civilizations and then on to the fabled
  42. lost city of Atlantis...and beyond....
  43.  
  44. The full game contains five richly detailed worlds on four CDs: Easter
  45. Island, Egypt, Anasazi, Mayan, and Atlantis. There is a wide variety of
  46. over 50 challenging puzzles and over 50 hours of immersive engaging
  47. gameplay.

  49. This demo is a partial walk-through of Easter Island. The area you can
  50. visit has been reduced in size and scope so that it can fit on the CD
  51. sampler disk for the magazine. It is intended to give you a "feel" for
  52. what the actual gameplay will be like.

  55. INSTALLING AND PLAYING THE TIMELAPSE GAME DEMO
  56.      (Requires copying to your hard disk)

  58. Installation and Start-up
  59.      1. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon on your desktop.
  60.      2. Drag the TimeLapse Demo folder onto your hard disk.
  61.      3. Open the TimeLapse Demo folder on your hard disk.
  62.      4. Double-click on 'Timelapse' to launch the game demo.
  63.  
  64. Solving The Sample Puzzle In This Demo
  65. The full TimeLapse game contains a wide variety of over 50 indigenous puzzles
  66. of varying degrees of complexity and skill, including a few games of chance.
  67.  
  68. Goal: Look for a dark cave and light the gas lantern. You can find the clues you
  69. need to solve this simple puzzle in the areas which you can visit.
  70. 
  71. Sanity-Saver Note:
  72. In this demo you can take a rubbing of an artifact. In the full game, the
  73. information
  74. thus obtained would serve a useful purpose. We've included it in the demo
  75. solely for
  76. conveying a feel for the game's finely interwoven challenges.

  78. USING THE CAMERA AND PHOTO COLLECTION
  79. In this demo, we've enabled the use of our unique "instant" camera, so you can
  80. photograph notable items for later reference.
  81.     ** The camera is activated by pressing Command-C.
  82.          Once the viewfinder appears,  Click to take a picture.
  83.          If you decide not to take a picture, drag the viewfinder
  84.          past the bottom of the screen, and it will disappear.
  85.  
  86.     ** To review your photographs, use Command-P.
  87.          When you are finished, click on any part of the black area
  88.          to return to the game.

  90. NAVIGATION
  91. Use the mouse or arrow keys to navigate through the world. If you are using
  92. the mouse, the cursor changes shape to show what functions or directions are
  93. available when you move the cursor around the screen.
  94.      [forward arrow]    Go forward
  95.      [back arrow]         Go back
  96.      [left arrow]          Go left
  97.      [right arrow]        Go right
  98.      [bull's eye]           Hyperlink (jump directly to that spot)
  99.      [open hand]           Grab/manipulate object
  100.      [pointing finger]   Touch to activate object

  102. If you are using the arrow keys, an icon at the lower left of the screen will
  103. indicate which directions are available. Sometimes you won't be able to go
  104. in all directions, so continue in a direction that the game does allow.
  105.  
  106. MANIPULATING OBJECTS
  107. When the hand icon appears as you move the cursor over an object, it indicates
  108. that you can pick up that object. The pointing finger icon indicates that
  109. you can
  110. manipulate that object. When either icon appears, press and hold the mouse
  111. button
  112. to manipulate the object.  Experiment; objects that you can pick up or
  113. manipulate
  114. are important to the game.

  119. Spacebar:   Opens the self-explanatory  Timelapse Functions and Options Screen
  120. (Many of these buttons are non-functional for this demo version).

  122. Cmd  + 0-9  Adjust ambient sound volume
  123.            0:  Minimum
  124.            9:  Maximum
  125. Cmd  + F1/F2     Adjust brightness
  126.            F1:  Brighter
  127.            F2:  Darker
  128. Cmd  + F3/F8     Adjust color balance
  129.            F3:  More Red
  130.            F4:  Less Red
  131.            F5:  More Green
  132.            F6:  Less Green
  133.            F7:  More Blue
  134.            F8:  Less Blue
  135.            F9:  Reset color to default setting
  136. Cmd  + Q     Quit current game

  140. UNINSTALLING TIMELAPSE
  141.      1. Drag the TimeLapse Demo folder into the Trash.
  142.      2. Choose Empty Trash from the Special menu

  145. PLAYING THE TIMELAPSE MOVIE
  146.  
  147.      Double-click on TimeLapse Movie to play a short movie trailer of
  148. Timelapse.
  149. This is a composite playing inside a small window. The actual game plays at
  150. 640 x 480. This movie is best viewed in Thousands or Millions of colors.

  154. TROUBLESHOOTING
  155. Check the installation section in this file before you contact Technical
  156. Support;
  157. the answers you need may be in there! If you're still having problems, GTE
  158. Entertainment provides technical support via telephone and the Internet.

  160. >>  Make Sure You Have Memory Available
  161.      You may have sufficient RAM (memory) in your computer, but you may be
  162. running other applications which use so much of that RAM, that there is not
  163. enough to run Timelapse. In that case, quit some of your applications, and try
  164. running Timelapse again. TimeLapse needs about 5000K (5MB) of available
  165. memory to run properly.

  167.  >>  Turn Off Your Screen Saver!
  168.      Screen-savers can play havoc with the color-system of a game program.
  169. To avoid color-change problems, please turn off your screen saver.
  170.  
  171. >>  If Your Screen Colors Distort Completely
  172.      Your screen saver may have started up because it may have not been
  173. deactivated.
  174. Don't panic or quit. Simply walk around the world to a location several
  175. steps away.
  176. Sometimes it may take ten or more steps, but the color will be restored to its
  177. intended settings. If you stand in one place and simply turn, it won't
  178. correct the
  179. problem. You need to walk to a new zone, such as inside to outside, or vice
  180. versa.
