- REGISTERING TEXTBREAK AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
- ================================================
- TextBreak is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
- register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
- personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
- following.
-
- 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
- I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
- I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
- register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
- an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
- deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
- like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
-
- See the documentation which should accompany this file for
- more information on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should
- also accompany this file. Please use it to register the software.
-
- USING TEXTBREAK
- ================
- • If you use TextBreak, please please please send me a note. My addresses
- (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
- information in the above section on registration.
-
- Who Will Use TextBreak
- ---------------------
- • TextBreak is an application written mainly for users who regularly
- compose messages for on-line services and for other purposes which
- require that text be organized such that each line is terminated by
- a carriage return, and sometimes a linefeed. Normally on a Mac, it is
- only paragraphs that are terminated by carriage returns. This poses
- a potential source of agony, since it often requires that you physically
- enter the carriage returns into your file, guessing at the best position
- to insert one in each line. It is also a pain if you wish to add text to
- a file that has already been organized into lines.
-
- What Does TextBreak Do?
- -----------------------
- • TextBreak, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box) determines the best
- location to end each line in a text file, based on criteria you have set up.
- It inserts the carriage returns (and linefeeds, if they are turned on) in the
- proper locations. The actual file is modified; a copy is not made.
-
- Using TextBreak
- ---------------
- • TextBreak can be used in two ways. You can double-click on the
- application icon to open the program, and use the Open... menu item in
- the File menu to select text files for modification. Note that only
- TEXT files can be modified by TextBreak. You can also modify your
- preferences from this menu. You could also drag sets of files, folders,
- or disks into the application, “Drop Box-style”. TextBreak will scan
- folders and disks provided, and will modify ALL text files in ALL of the
- directories provided, no matter what their depth. The latter method
- requires Apple Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher. Tabs and spaces
- are treated as identical one-column white space characters by
- TextBreak.
-
- • To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Cancelling in the
- middle of a file causes that file to be left unchanged. However, files
- already processed will remain modified.
-
- • TextBreak uses a temp file for processing. Make sure that there is
- enough space to make a duplicate copy of the largest file you are
- operating on, on the disk that the file is contained in. Also make sure
- that the disk is not locked.
-
- Preferences
- -----------
- • The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the
- preferences dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct
- parameters have been set up. You can modify these if you wish. If
- you don't want to see that window again, just say OK. You will have to
- explicitly ask for for the Preferences window the next time you wish
- to change anything.
-
- • To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
- option key while the program is launching.
-
- • The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can set the maximum
- number of columns of a monospaced font (like Monaco or Courier) to
- allow in your text files, toggle the insertion of a linefeed after each
- carriage return, and define how hyphens are treated in a file.
-
- • When hyphens are turned on, TextBreak can insert a return after a
- hyphen. Otherwise, hyphens are treated like any other non-white-space
- character.
-
- USING DROP BOXES
- =================
- Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
- of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
- icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
- The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
- You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
- just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
- combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
- files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
- directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
- directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
- and thus their target (parent) is modified.
