  44. This version of the Sun Solaris version is the version which has been
  45. shipped to Sun Microsystems for evaluation as their SunFax product.  As a
  46. result you will see references to SunFax within this version.
  47.  
  48. SunFax is a trademark of Sun Microsystems and when Faximum releases its own
  49. version of this product all references to SunFax will be replaced by Faximum.
  50.  
  51. Please note also that certain advanced features of Faximum's normal fax
  52. product line (including the WP macro, line printer intercept, and others)
  53. are not a part of SunFax.  They will be part of Faximum's Solaris product.

  62. I.    Preparing to Install the Software
  63. ---------------------------------------

  66.  1.   Verify that your system is running a supported version of the operation
  67.       system and that the modem you plan to use is recommended for use with
  68.       Faximum.  (See the information below.)
  69.  
  70.  
  71.  2.   Select the server machine.
  72.  
  73.       Select one of the machines on your network which is to act as the fax
  74.       server for your network.  The fax server machine is the one that will
  75.       be connected to the fax modems.
  76.  
  77.       Faximum Client/Server is designed to allow multiple client machines
  78.       access the fax services of one or more fax servers.  You are permitted
  79.       to install the client software on as many systems as you wish as long
  80.       as (a) they are connected to a network with access to the machine that
  81.       acts as the fax server and (b) the fax server machine has a properly
  82.       licensed copy of the software installed.
  83.

  85.  3.   Make sure you have sufficient disk space on the server and client
  86.       machines to install the software.
  87.  
  88.       Note that currently the software must be installed in the
  89.       /opt directory. (i.e. /opt/FAXserver amnd /opt/FAXclient).
  90.       While the next release will permit installation in any directory
  91.       this release must be installed in /opt.  If this is a problem,
  92.       create a symbolic link from /opt to the desired installation
  93.       directory.
  94.  
  95.       The server package requires about 3.5 of space.
  96.  
  97.       The client package requires about 6Mb of space.
  98.       The client package also requires the CDE Motif shared library be installed.
  99.       If you are running Solaris 2.3, you will need to install the SUNWmfsmc 
  100.       package (included on the media provided with Faximum).
  101.       If you are running Solaris 2.4, you will need to install the SUNWmfrun 
  102.       package (included on your Solaris 2.4 media).

  106.  4.   Complete the registration form (attached to the end of this file).

  108.       ***** IMPORTANT INFORMATION *****
  109.  
  110.       Note that in order to complete the configuration of the Faximum
  111.       Client/Server software you will need to obtain a coded serial number
  112.       and activation key from Faximum to enable your software.  The
  113.       registration form is also your request for an activation key.
  114.       Faximum will respond within two business days with the necessary codes.
  115.  
  116.       Note that in order to complete the form you will need to know the system
  117.       ID for the server machine.  You may obtain this by typing in the command
  118.       'sysdef -h' on the server machine.

  121. Supported Hardware and Operating Systems
  122. ........................................

  124. This version of the Faximum Client/Server Fax software is designed to work
  125. with any Sparc compatible system running Sun Solaris 2.3.
  126.  
  127. Note that while faxes may be submitted from character terminals, the Faximum
  128. Server requires access to a graphics console or X terminal in order to
  129. administer the product.
  130.  
  131. While this software will probably run on Solaris systems prior to 2.3, it has
  132. not been tested on such systems and users are recommended to contact Faximum
  133. Technical Support prior to installing this software on pre-2.3 systems.

  136. Supported Fax Modems
  137. ....................
  138.  
  139. In general, the Faximum Client/Server Fax software has been designed to work
  140. with any Class 2 or 2.0 (EIA-592) external fax modem.
  141.  
  142. If you are uncertain whether your modem is Class 2 or 2.0, send the following
  143. command to the modem:
  144.     AT+FCLASS=?
  145.  
  146. If the response contains the digit 2 then it will probably work (at least to
  147. some degree) with the Faximum Client/Server software.
  148.  
  149. Note that with Class 2 and 2.0 modems much of the low-level fax protocol is
  150. handled by the firmware in the modem.  This means that problems sending or
  151. receiving faxes may be caused by the modem's firmware and not by Faximum's
  152. software. If such problems are reported to Faximum Technical Support and
  153. are determined to be modem problems then the user will be asked to contact
  154. the modem manufacturer for assistance.
  155.  
  156. The modems listed below have all been used with some degree of success with
  157. Faximum.  The modems listed in the first group have been found to be markedly
  158. superior in operation to those in the second group.
  159.

  162.     all Telebit fax modems
  163.     all ZyXel fax modems
  164.  
  165. Compatible Fax Modems:
  166.     Computer Peripherals fax modems
  167.     Intel FaxModems (but not SatisFAXtion modems)
  168.     Practical Peripherals fax modems
  169.     Supra
  170.     US Robotics modems with Class 2 fax support
  171.     most Rockwell-based modems
  172.  
  173. Note that at the time this file was written Hayes does not support Class 2
  174. fax operation with any of their modems.

  180. II.   Installing the Software
  181. -----------------------------

  183.  1.   If you are installing the software from tape:
  184.  
  185.       Extract the files from the solaris directory on tape into a temporary
  186.       directory on the system that is to become the fax server machine.
  187.       For example:

  189.     cd /tmp
  190.     tar xvf /dev/rmt/0 solaris
  191.  
  192.       This will create a sub-directory called solaris containing the following
  193.       files:
  194.     README

  196.     faxclient.tar

  198.       The README file contains a copy of these installation instructions.

  200.       If you have retrieved this software by FTP, uncompress the tar file
  201.       and use tar to extract these three files:

  319.  3.  Install the server software by running the pkgadd utility.  When asked
  320.      where to install the software, press Enter (or Return) to accept the
  321.      default (/opt).  As mentioned earlier, installation in other directories
  322.      is not yet supported. For example:

  730. software you will need a serial number and activation key from Faximum
  731. Software.  As mentioned in Section I earlier, these are obtained by
  732. completing the registration form and sending it to Faximum Software.

  735. files.  You may use any text editor you are familiar with such as vi,
  736. emacs, or HP's vuepad.

  879. Please note that while this software has been extensively tested within
  880. Faximum's engineering labs and has been used by several Beta test sites,
  881. the software is sufficiently new that problems may be expected to arise
  882. from time to time.

  884. In order to minimise the disruption caused by such problems, Faximum Software
  885. will extend special support to all EAP (Early Availability Product) customers.
  886.  
  887. When calling during normal support hours (see above), please identify yourself
  888. as an Solaris EAP customer.  Should you need support after normal support hours,
  889. please call the main Faximum number, (604) 925-3600, identify yourself as
  890. an Solaris EAP customer, and ask for special technical support.

  892. With the current EAP release (RC13) there is one known defect that may cause
  893. problems while using the Faximum Client. During any single session, the client
  894. software is prone to exit abruptly if asked to preview an outgoing fax or
  895. view an incoming fax more than once. This problem sometimes also occurs when
  896. in other parts of the product. We are working on this problem and hope
  897. to have a fix available shortly. If you are able to reproduce this problem
  898. reliably we should very much appreciate learning the details.
  899.  
  900. We also acknowledge that significant work remains to finish the on-line help.

  902. Please also note that the WordPerfect fax macro is not available with this
  903. release.

  928. The terms and conditions of this Agreement apply to the Faximum Software
  929. including any copy. The term "Faximum Software" means programs and related

  932. 1    GRANT OF LICENCE
  933. 1.1    Faximum hereby grants you a personal, non-transferable, and
  934.         non-exclusive right to use the Faximum Software within Canada and the
  935.     United States (the "Territory") subject to the terms and conditions

  938. 2    LIMITATIONS ON USE
  939. 2.1    You may only use the Faximum Software in a single computer system and
  940.         the copy of the Faximum Software provided herewith may only be
  941.     installed on one machine.
  942. 2.2    If you wish to install the Faximum Software on another machine, you
  943.     must either remove the Faximum Software from the machine on which it
  944.     has previously been installed or you must purchase an additional copy

  1015.     this Licence Agreement shall be brought in the courts of the Province
  1016.     of British Columbia.
  1017. 7.3    If any provision hereof shall be deemed by any court to be invalid,
  1018.     legality and enforceability of the remaining provisions hereof shall
  1019.     not be affected or impaired.
  1020. 7.4    This Agreement enures to the benefit of and shall be binding upon you,
  1021.     your successors, heirs, and assigns and Faximum Software, its
  1022.     successors, and assigns.
  1023. 7.5    All provisions of this Licence are also intended for the benefit of
  1024.     Faximum, and its suppliers who can enforce this Agreement without

  1026. 7.6    Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties;
  1027.     if so, only those limitations of warranty which are specifically
