  1.                        Why is PC-Hypertext a free program?

  4. I've made PC-Hypertext free because I think this policy serves the best
  5. interests of both developers and users.
  6.  
  7. In considering whether to charge a fee for each run-time hypertext system
  8. created or a flat fee to create such systems, I was reminded of the early days
  9. of personal computers and the attempts by the creators of compilers and
  10. database builders to charge similar fees.  It didn't work then and therefore
  11. seems inappropriate in hypertext run-time systems.
  12.  
  13. For that reason, developers (people who order our Hypertext-tools) are
  14. licensed to distribute their knowledge systems on our PC-Hypertext program
  15. free of any royalties.
  16.  
  17. To aid developers, we do provide free disk labels that contain text space for
  18. developer information (e.g., program, address, phone, copyright notice).
  19.  
  20. However, if you wish to create your own hypertext disk label, please
  21. include our copyright notice (PC-Hypertext (c) MaxThink 1987) on the disk
  22. containing PC-Hypertext.

  25. Support for PC-Hypertext developers

  28. Beyond the issue of labels, we are happy to help promote either the hypertext
  29. systems you create or mention your capabilities for building such systems to
  30. people who desire to locate people within their community or knowledge area.

  32. If you wish to participate in this network, I'd recommend that you build a
  33. one-disk sample hypertext system in a favorite knowledge area of yours.  In
  34. complexity, the disk should be perhaps 70 ASCII files, 5-10 networks, and
  35. 200-300 cross-links.

  37. If you send such a sample disk to me, I'll be happy to mention your
  38. hypertext sampler disk in my next newsletter.  This will provide you with
  39. leads for building custom systems or contacts for joint efforts with
  40. colleagues in system design or construction -- in business, government, or
  41. education.

  43. Again, I'm interested in how your system compares with other such disks in
  44. style, format, presentation, and access paths.  In addition, I can provide
  45. names and phone numbers of others with whom you may wish to exchange your
  46. portfolio disks and other ways to bring your work to the attention of
  47. editors, users, or publishers.

  49. Why this support?  Well, the great American hypertext system is not yet
  50. written . . . and if you've got it (or talents in this area), I like
