  16. Computer programs are like specialized assembly lines that help users quickly
  17. create and modify information.  But while such assembly lines dominate
  18. computing in number, data, and text processing, the contents of most software

  30. If you accept this distinction between knowledge and processes, I'd argue that
  31. few programs contain knowledge.  Computer software centering on processing
  32. focuses more on creating or modifying information than on discovering new ideas

  35. If you accept the definition of knowledge as information with structure,
  36. hypertext puts knowledge on a disk.  What does that mean?  <FILE75>

  38. Well. . . the entire computer industry represents 2% of our GNP, while some
  39. 70% of all employment is information related.  As a consequence, technology
  40. for dispensing knowledge may be a more important paradigm than technology for
  41. processing data.   Data processing is seldom knowledge processing!
