- °Hypertext Hypertext Introduction
- ──────────────────────
-
- Hypertext is a technique for inter-connecting information for the purpose
- of making it easier to locate desired sections of that information. You
- can think of Hypertext as a sort of bookmark and index system. You can, with
- a single key, go off to look at some information related to what you are
- currently looking at. When you are done looking at that other information,
- you can return to where you were with another single key.
-
- Lets try it to see how it works. ∙Other-Information
-
- Notice the word pair shown above shown in reverse video, press the TAB
- key to move to that word. Now you are ready to "link" to
- Other-Information. You can perform the link in one of three ways:
-
- Press Enter Press F9 Press Alt-B
- (links ONLY while browsing) (the link key) (B meaning BROWSE)
-
- Press any of the above keys NOW! When you come back unlink with ∙F10.
-
- °Other-Information Other information on Hypertext
- ──────────────────────────────
-
- You are now at least +2 levels down in the Hypertext links. The number
- you see at the upper right hand corner of the screen tells you how many
- links FORWARD have been performed. Each time you link forward (like an
- index) to a new piece of information, your previous location is saved
- (like a bookmark). You can link forward exploring new information up to
- twenty (20) times before the link save stack fills up.
-
- When it comes time to "unlink", The ∙F10 key will unlink to the exact
- previous place where you linked from.
-
- This Hypertext system is really implimented as a special "mode" of the
- SED editor. You are in fact in the SED editor now, in what I call BROWSE
- mode. You are allowed to look around, but you can't make any changes.
-
-
- Press ∙F10 to UNLINK, or Press PgDn for more.
-
-
- More Information on the Browser
- ───────────────────────────────
-
- Certain keys perform special functions while in BROWSE mode. as
- mentioned before the TAB key moves to the next reverse video link, and
- Enter performs a link to the current word under the cursor.
-
- BROWSE mode is indicated visually by the word BROWSE in the upper left
- corner, and the double line screen border.
-
- In Browse mode, you can use the editor PgDn & PgUp as well as Arrow
- keys to move through a file, or you can move the cursor to a word of
- interest, and press F9 or Enter to link directly to that topic.
-
- Actually, F-TZ will allow you to try linking to ANY word in a file. You
- can link to ANY Forth word for example. If no link is available for a
- word, you will receive a message to that effect. In a documentation file
- like this, linked words are shown in reverse video to make them stand out.
-
- Press ∙F10 to UNLINK, or Press PgDn for more.
-
- Browser Introduction (cont.)
- ────────────────────
- You can link THROUGH a DEFERED Forth word by pressing Alt-F9. This is
- useful for defered words like ∙EMIT . F9 will link to the source for one
- of these words, and Alt-F9 will link to its defered function.
-
- Position the cursor with TAB on EMIT above.
- press F9 then ∙F10 to return.
-
- You will have seen the source for EMIT which is a defered word and not
- very interesting.
-
- Now press Alt-F9 then ∙F10 to return.
-
- You will see the source for (EMIT) which is the function in EMIT.
-
- If you are nested deeply into a complex browse, you can Unnest quickly to
- the top level edit or browse, by using the File menu's Unnest item. the key
- sequence for Unnest is Shift-F10 or ESC-F-U.
- Press ∙F10 to UNLINK
-
- °DOS-Commands DOS Commands in the Browser
- ───────────────────────────
-
- DOS commands can be issued while within the Z editor in several ways:
-
- 1. Ctrl-Enter will prompt you for a dos command line to perform.
-
- 2. Shift-Ctrl-Enter will perform the most recent DOS command you have
- entered again without a prompt.
-
- 3. Alt-F2 will perform a series of DOS commands you have entered in a
- document in the following format:
-
- <dir;pause> Dir of current directory and pause.
- <dir *.txt;dir *.com;pause> Dir of all .TXT and all .COM files.
- <;> Spawn a shell. Type EXIT to return.
- <dir> Dir of current directory with no
- pause on command completion.
-
- Press ∙F10 to UNLINK

- SED provides both pulldown menus, and fairly complete mouse support.
- Select ∙*Menus* for a description of using pulldown menus with the
- keyboard.
-
- To use a mouse in SED you must have a compatible mouse driver (like
- MOUSE.COM) already installed in your autoexec.bat. When F-TZ starts up, it
- looks for the presence of a mouse driver, and activates the mouse if the
- driver is present.
-
- As you are looking at this screen you will see arrows to the right and
- lower right of the screen. These arrows can be used to scroll the screen,
- showing more text from the direction the arrow is pointing by clicking the
- left mouse button. The ∙F10 or +1 etc. in the upper right corner can be used
- like the ∙F10 key by positioning the mouse and clicking the left button. You
- can also change the INSERT/OVERWRITE mode by clicking at the top left of
- the screen on INSERT. Help can be obtained by pressing HELP at the lower
- left. The cursor can be positioned by clicking within the edit window with
- the left mouse button. The right mouse button is the same as the ESC key.
-
- °*Menus* Using Pull Down Menus Press ∙F10 to pop Help level
- ─────────────────────
-
- SED uses Pull Down menus to make many functions available while editing.
- Press the ESC key NOW to see the menubar appear at the top of the screen.
-
- If you have pressed the ESC key, then you are looking at a list of menu
- titles starting with "File" which should be shown in reverse video, through
- "Help" on the right. Use the keypad right arrow key to walk along the
- menubar. As you press right arrow, the hilighting moves along the menubar.
- Continue to press right arrow until "File" is again the hilighted menu. Now
- press down arrow to pull the menu down. Notice the last two items of the
- "File" menu, Exit and Quit. To the right of these menu items, are
- displayed the short cut keys F10 and Alt-F10. Any menu function can be
- performed with the short cut key rather than moving through the menu and
- pressing Enter. If you press right arrow while the "File" menu is pulled
- down, you will walk along the menu bar with each menu "open", so you can
- see what menu items are available. You can also press the first
- CAPITALIZED letter of a menu item to perform the item.

- °Setup-NEWZ Setting up NEWZ and compiling index files
- ─────────────────────────────────────────
- Included with NEWZ is a file called "NEWZ.CFG". This file contains
- a series of lines holding parameters used by NEWZ. The NEWZ.CFG file
- will look something like the following example (the line numbers are
- not included in the file):
- 1: PATH C:\;C:\TEXT;C:\NEWZ ; file search path
- 2: DEFEXT TXT ; default file extension
- 3: DELIMS " " ; browse word delimiter string
- 4: SPECS *.TXT;*.DOC ; index compiler specs.
- 5: GLOBAL \TEXT ; hyper index \TEXT dir and below
- 6: WRAP ON ; turn wordwrap ON, or OFF
- 7: BACKUP ON ; make backup copies of files
- 8: AFTER 0 ; start looking after column 0
- 9: BEFORE 132 ; stop looking at column 132
- 10: STOPAT \ ; stop looking when ";" found
- 11: HILIGHT { } ; hilight these words in text
- 12: TYPE 0 "°" ; ∙Index-Compiler command
- 13: COLOR 1 1 2 ; set attrib1 to bg=blue, fg=green
- 14: ; ; stop looking at file

- Parameter descriptions by line number
-
-
- 1. Directory search path line. The directories NEWZ will
- search when you specify a file to open but don't include a
- path to the designated file. This path is similar in format
- to the DOS PATH command, but excludes the "=" symbol.
-
-
- 2. Default file extension. When you specify a file to open
- but do not give it an extension, NEWZ will apply this the
- default file extension to the filename before trying to
- open it. If the line following DEFEXT is blank, no default
- file extension will be applied to files.
-
-
- Press PgDn for more
-
- Parameter descriptions by line number (continued)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────
- 3. BrowseWord, uses the characters between " chars as a word
- delimiter for the browse word operation. normally just a space,
- but can contain other characters for use with other languages.
- for example " (+-)[];" might be used for the "C" language.
-
- 4. Index compile file specifications. NEWZ can build an
- index file from multiple file specifications as included
- on this line. Filespecs can include full paths if needed.
-
- 5. Including the GLOBAL command followed by any directory, will
- cause Z, when building the Hyper Index file, to search all
- directories including the one specified and below for matching
- file specs. "GLOBAL \" will search entire drive.
-
- 6. ON, OFF or 20 to 132, enables or disables wordwrap at editor
- startup. ON calculates right margin according to longest file
- line. 20 to 132 set a fixed right margin regardless of file.

- specified will be examined when building HYPER.NDX. Defaults to
- zero if not specified.
-
- 9. Only the characters in each line BEFORE the column number
- specified will be examined. Defaults to column 132 if not set.
-
- 10. Don't look at the contents of any line beyond the specified
- terminator character. (backslash in this case.) When building
- the index file.
-
- 11. Hilight the words following whenever they are found on the
- screen. Words are seperated by spaces, in list and on screen.
- Multiple HILIGHT lines are accepted from the NEWZ.CFG file.

- color pair following. Three parameters follow the COLOR command,
- an attribute number 0 to 4, and two color value in the range
- 0 to 15. Attribute 0 controls the normal background/forground
- colors as used for text. Attributes 1 through 4 control various
- aspects of the screen display. The color values for background/
- forground, range from 0 to 15 as follows:
-
- 0=black 1=blue 2=green 3=cyan 4=red
- 5=magenta 6=brown 7=ltgray 8=dkgray 9=ltblue

- °Index-Compiler Index Compiler Directives
- ─────────────────────────
- Three index compiler directives are currently supported, they each start
- with the word "TYPE" followed by a type number and a "string" parameter:
-
- 0 "string" Pick up and index the word IMMEDIATELY following
- string. No space delimiter is required. If you
- want to space delimit the string, include a space
- within the quotes. Examples: ": " "CONSTANT "
- "CODE " etc.
-
- This type can pick up words following, as will be
- the case with the above examples, or you can pick
- up words starting with a character by not
- including a space at the end of the string. An
- example of this is the graphic symbol above "°",
- which compiles any word starting with this
- symbol. That is any hypertext destination link.
-
- Press PgDn for more
-
- Index Compiler Directives continued
- ───────────────────────────────────
-
- 1 ":" Pick up and index the word preceeding this
- symbol. That is index all words that end in a ":"
- character. Normally used for assembler labels.
-
- 2 "string " Pick up and index the word at the start of this
- line preceeding this string. Again this is
- typically used to include references to the
- assembler word LABEL as it is used in some
- assemblers. here is an example:
-
- symbol_name LABEL
-
- Symbol_name will be included in the index file.
