- PageMate for Windows v1.0
-
-
- D E S C R I P T I O N
-
- PageMate monitors your telephone line for an incoming ring and then
- dials your pager (or other number) after a specific delay. Your phone
- number or the time a call was received or a call counter can be
- transmitted to your pager. Incoming and outgoing calls are logged to a
- text file for later examination.
-
- PageMate is most commonly used in conjunction with digital display
- pagers (or "beepers") and answering machines to notify owners of
- incoming messages, but it can call any telephone number and an
- answering machine is not necessary. PageMate will work with rotary
- pulse or tone telephone line service.

- PageMate for Windows v1.0
-
-
- I N S T A L L A T I O N
-
- Start Windows. From the Program Manager, choose Run from the File
- Menu. Type A:SETUP and press Enter. If the PageMate files are in
- another drive or directory, substitute A: with that drive and/or
- directory.
-
-
- O P E R A T I O N
-
- The first time you run PageMate you will need to set it up for your
- system. All setup data is saved in the PAGE.INI file for future use.
- You can view or change your setup data anytime.
-
- Click on the Setup Button (or press Alt-S) to display the Setup
- window.
-
- Use your mouse or press the Tab key to position your cursor in the
- various input areas.
-
- 1. [Com Port:] Determine which COM port your modem is attached to
- (1-4) and click on the appropriate COM port radio button.
- ( Default: Com1 )
-
- 2. [Baud Rate:] Select a Baud rate (300, 1200, 2400, or 9600) and
- click on the appropriate radio button. The baud rate has no
- effect on PageMate since it is not communicating with another
- modem, however a baud rate is necessary to configure a serial
- port. You can use the highest or lowest baud rate your modem
- supports. The baud rate must be 1200 or higher for dialtone
- detection to work. ( Default: 1200)
-
- 3. [Line Service:] Select whether you have Tone or Pulse line
- service and click on the appropriate radio button.
- ( Default: Tone )
-
- 4. [Busy Redial:] Select whether you want PageMate to redial when it
- detects a busy signal. Note: Some older paging systems transmit a
- busy signal at the end of the call to indicate that the
- transmission was received. PageMate will sense that busy signal
- and attempt to redial if this option is "Yes". ( Default: Yes )
-
- 5. [Transmit:] PageMate can transmit one of the following to your
- pager: 1) The Number specified in the Transmit Number field. 2)
- The Time the last call was received (hour:minutes). 3) A call
- Counter. Click on the down arrow button to select one of the
- three options. ( Default: Number )
-
- Note: Tone line service is necessary to transmit numbers to the
- paging service.
-
- 6. [Modem Initialization String:] Enter a modem initialization
- string. Most Hayes compatible modems use the default string.
- Newer high speed modems may require appending additional codes
- (like &F2 for "PC" mode). If PageMate does not work correctly
-
- 3
-
-
- PageMate for Windows v1.0
-
-
- with your modem, consult your modem manual for details on it's
- command set codes. ( Default: ATE1Q0V1X4&C1&D2 )
-
- 7. [Delay Secs:] Enter the number of seconds PageMate should delay
- before calling the pager. If you are using an answering machine,
- allow callers enough time to leave a message and for single-tape
- machines to rewind. Usually 3-5 minutes (180-300 seconds) is
- sufficient. ( Default: 180 )
-
- 8. [Pager Number:] Enter the pager number (or other number) PageMate
- is to call and a comma for every 2 seconds PageMate should wait
- for the pager number to answer (the default pause of a comma on
- most modems is usually 2 seconds). Special characters, spaces,
- dashes, and parentheses can be included for readability and are
- usually ignored by modems. Six seconds is often enough time for
- paging services to answer before sending the transmit number,
- e.g.
-
- *70,555-5555,,,
-
- Translation: Dial *70 to disable call waiting, pause for 2
- seconds to get another dial tone, then dial 555-5555 and wait for
- 6 seconds before sending the number to be displayed on pager.
-
- 9. [Transmit Number:] Enter the telephone number to be transmitted
- to the pager. Suffix the number with a pound sign (#) or other
- character required by your paging service to indicate
- transmission completed, e.g.
-
- 999-9999#
-
- Note: Tone line service is necessary to transmit numbers to the
- paging service.
-
- 10. [Hangup Secs:] Enter the number of seconds to wait after dialing
- the pager number before hanging up the line. Allow enough time
- for the pager service's phone to ring, answer, and receive the
- number to be transmitted. I find that 20 seconds is adequate for
- my pager service, but yours may differ. 20-40 seconds is usually
- adequate. ( Default: 20 )
-
- 11. Click on the Save button to save your setup data in the PAGE.INI
- file, or click on the Cancel button to leave setup without
- changing the PAGE.INI file. Click on the Help button to display
- this file.
-
-
- S T A R T I N G P A G E M A T E
-
- Double-Click on the PageMate icon to start the program. The PageMate
- window will appear and after a few moments of modem/port
- initialization, the date and time will be displayed and the seconds
- should be ticking. A "Waiting for next call." message will appear.
- Click on the minimize button (upside-down triangle) to run PageMate
- "minimized" if desired.

- PageMate for Windows v1.0
-
-
- You can turn off your monitor and leave PageMate and your computer
- unattended. When PageMate detects the first incoming ring on your
- telephone line, it will begin counting down the delay seconds you
- specified in setup and then call the number you specified in setup.
-
- If PageMate does not detect a dialtone, it will again pause for the
- delay seconds specified in Setup and retry the call. Dialtone
- detection is subject to modem quality and line activity. Note also
- that the baud rate must be set at 1200 or greater for dialtone
- detection.
-
-
- ACTIVITY LOGGING
-
- All incoming and outgoing call activity including testing is recorded
- in an ASCII text file named PAGE.LOG. PageMate creates this file in
- the directory where it is installed.
-
- To view PAGE.LOG, click on the Log button (or press Alt-L). The log
- feature uses the Notepad program that is included with Windows 3.x.
- With Notepad you can scroll through PAGE.LOG, print or delete selected
- areas, search, etc.
-
- PAGE.LOG can also be examined or printed with a word processor, text
- editor (such as DOS 5.0's EDIT), or with DOS commands such as PRINT
- PAGE.LOG or TYPE PAGE.LOG.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTE: PAGE.LOG IS NOT DELETED BY PAGEMATE, SO OCCASIONALLY
- YOU WILL NEED TO DELETE IT WHEN IT GETS LARGER THAN DESIRED!
-
-
- T E S T I N G
-
- You can test PageMate any time by clicking on the "Test" button (or
- press Alt-T).
-
-
- E X I T I N G
-
- To exit PageMate, click on the "Exit" button (or press Alt-X).
