  18. What is Cello?

  20. Most of you already know this, or you wouldn't have grabbed the 
  21. file -- but we get mail from people who have downloaded the 
  22. package without knowing what it is.  This part's for them.
  23.  
  24. Cello is a multipurpose Internet browser which permits you to 
  25. access information from many sources in many formats.  
  26. Technically, it's a WorldWideWeb client application.  This 
  27. means that you can use Cello to access data from WorldWideWeb, 
  28. Gopher, FTP, and CSO/ph/qi servers, as well as X.500 directory 
  29. servers, WAIS servers, HYTELNET, TechInfo, and others through external 
  30. gateways.  You can also use Cello and the WWW-HTML hypertext 
  31. markup standard to build local hypertext systems on LANS, on 
  32. single machines, and so on.  Cello also permits the 
  33. postprocessing of any file for which you've set up an 
  34. association in the Windows File Manager -- for example, if you 
  35. download an uncompressed Microsoft Word file from an FTP site, 
  36. and the appropriate association exists in File Manager, Cello 
  37. will run MS-Word on it for you.  This same capability is used 
  38. to view graphics and listen to sound files you get from the Net.

  41. What you need to run it

  43. To run Cello, you need the files in this archive, plus some 
  44. flavor of Winsock TCP/IP stack -- a piece of "middleware" which 
  45. communicates with the Net.  Cello works with all of the popular 
  46. Winsock packages, although some trouble has been reported with 
  47. certain implementations (see below).  You will, of course, need 
  48. to be directly connected to the network or have access to a 
  49. SLIP or PPP server, depending on which of these your Winsock 
  50. package supports.

  52. Cello runs on any hardware with a 386SX chip or better.  We 
  53. have seen it run with 2Mb RAM (with swapping on) on a 
  54. 386/SX-16, but it's not a pretty sight.  We recommend a minimum 
  55. of 4 MB RAM.  You will want to install -- if you haven't already --
  56. a video driver which supports 256-color operation.

  70. First, install your Winsock software per the vendor's 
  71. instructions.  If you're installing Winsock for the first time, 
  72. please use the vendor's PING application to check that your 
  73. connection to the network, to your local gateway, and to your 
  74. nameserver are working.

  76. We suggest that you create the following directories:
  77.  
  78. C:\CELLO
  79. C:\CELLO\VIEWERS
  80. C:\CELLO\DOWNLOAD
  81.  
  82. Unzip the zipped archive (CELLO.ZIP) into the C:\CELLO 
  83. directory, and follow the installation and configuration 
  84. instructions in the online help file.  If by chance you can't 
  85. get Cello to start, you can still view the online help file by 
  86. clicking on CLOHELP.HLP in File Manager; it's a Windows help 
  87. application, and should start up in WinHelp without any trouble.
  88. A listing of the files in the archive is below; they include 
  89. style files for various video resolutions, plus "empty" 
  90. bookmark and CELLO.INI files

  92. If you do not currently use a TEMP directory (specified via the TEMP 
  93. environment variable) we suggest that you do so.  We also 
  94. suggest that you enable the Windows virtual-memory feature.

  100. Winsock notes:

  102. PC-NFS:
  103.  
  104. PC-NFS' current winsock implementation does not support DNS 
  105. natively.  You can simulate DNS if you're running an NIS server 
  106. and have the wshelper.exe add-on.  This is to be fixed in the 
  107. next version of PC-NFS.
  108.  
  109. FTP Software:
  110.  
  111. We receive mixed reports about Cello's operation with FTP Software's
  112. PCTCP Winsock.  It seems to work well for the majority of people, but
  113. problems are sometimes reported with the retrieval of Web documents
  114. which contain multiple inlined images.  Check the Cello FAQ for tips
  115. on configuration.
  116.  
  117. Notes on the installation of Winsock are usually available with 
  118. the vendor's distribution.

  121. Documented problems which aren't fixed yet:
  122. --------------------------------------------------------------
  123. -- Cello's builtin Telnet client has trouble with some SunOS 
  124. and ULTRIX machines (and maybe more).  For some reason these 
  125. expect an <LF> character as the carriage-return prior to 
  126. login.  A typical symptom is that the host machine will give 
  127. you a login prompt, you'll type the login name and hit <ENTER>, 
  128. the cursor will return to the beginning of the line, and 
  129. nothing else happens.  To work around this, use <CTRL-ENTER> 
  130. instead of <ENTER> to send the host machine a <LF> character.
  131. Another possibility is to use the Use Your Own Telnet... 
  132. feature to splice in a telnet of your own.
  133.  
  134. -- Only 8-1/2 x 11 paper is supported by the printing feature, 
  135. and your mileage may vary depending on the make and model of 
  136. printer you use.
