- 1. Intro
- ==================================
-
- If you have not already done so, you should read the release notes in
- mit/RELNOTES.TXT. There is a lot of good information about how to
- compile X.
-
- The X sources are available via anonymous ftp from export.lcs.mit.edu.
-
- =========================================================================
- 2. How to compile X
- ==================================
-
- Make World
-
- This will remake all the Makefiles (using imake), generate
- dependencies, clean out all the object files, and then recompile
- everything from scratch.
-
- Make Everything
-
- This will recompile everything that is out of date.
-
- Make install
-
- This will install everything in the directory $(DESTDIR)/usr/X11R5.
- To install everything in the normal places, run
-
- make DESTDIR=/ install
-
- /usr/X11R5 is a symbolic link to /X11/R5.
-
- =========================================================================
- 3. How to make changes to X
- ==================================
-
- X does not use pmake, it uses imake instead. So if you need to change
- the compiler flags or reconfigure the way it is compiled, then you need
- to check out the files in /X11/R5/mit.$MACHINE/config. Most of these
- files are symbolic links to /sprite/lib/imake.
-
- Be careful when you change things in /sprite/lib/imake because there
- are other programs besides X that use imake.
-
- The X sources contains about 50 gazillion files, so to make it easier
- to find a particular file, there is a list in the top directories called
- file.lst. You can grep through it to find a particular file. If this
- file does not exist, you can recreate it by running
-
- find /X11/R5/mit.$MACHINE -print > /X11/R5/mit.$MACHINE/file.lst
-
- Each of the root X source directories contains an ID file, so you can
- find variable names using lid, gid, etc. You can recreate the ID
- database using this command:
-
- find . -name '*.[ch]' -print | mkid -v -
-
- The master sources for X11R5 are in /X11/R5/mit. Do not change anything
- in the master sources. For each machine type there is a tree of symbolic
- links that point to the master sources. If you need to make any changes,
- to a file, you should replace the link with a copy of the file, and then
- edit it.
-

- 4. How to port a new version of X to Sprite.
- ==================================
-
- The X sources are available via anonymous ftp from export.lcs.mit.edu.
-
- ./server/os/connection.c
-
- Sprite Pdevs
-
- ./server/os/io.c
-
- Sprite Pdevs
-
- ./server/os/osinit.c
-
- Use /dev/syslog for X error messages.
