- XThis is a source file distribution for the game FUNADV as implemented
- Xin VAX Fortan. (Well, ok, there are two pascal subroutines, which are
- Xthere mainly because they had already been written to support other
- Xcode, and I didn't bother to redo them in fortran. Maybe for the
- Xnext version.) The game is a direct decendant from Adventure, and
- Xcontains many of the same places...or anyway, so they might appear.
- XThe game should prove refreshing to those who enjoy the traditional
- Xadventure.`20
- X
- XThis game came from Georgia Tech, and does contain a few references
- Xthat are based on the Tech computing environment in the late 1970's and
- Xearly 1980's. These include references to the "PSGAMES FORUM" program,
- Xwhich was a primative conferencing system. One notable feature of this
- Xprogram was that it held three days worth of messages. The process of
- Xsetting up for the new day was the "Update", which was started by`20
- Xbeing the first user to send a message on a new day. Users would compete
- Xfor this "honor"; getting the update, especally when many users were
- Xtrying for it, was called "snarfing" the update.
- X
- X"Pete Bogman" (a handle) was a frequent user of this system who could`20
- Xhave easily taught creative grammar and spelling to Biff. Pete was also
- Xnot noted for his domestic skills. His sister was known as "Sweat Peat".
- X
- XDwight Rudolph was a systems programmer who was somewhat of a cult figure
- Xto the admiring undergraduates. Besides being a Cyber Wizard in every
- Xsense of the word, he possessed a certian "savior faire" and dry wit
- Xthat made him a defacto role model for the many system programmer
- Xwantabes, of which I was one at the time. `20
- X
- XAn example of Dwight's comments, from the forum code, follow:
- X
- X*** THIS CODE WAS WRITTEN FOR USE WITH THE FORUM PROGRAM SUPPORTED
- X* BY THE SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY, GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY.`20
- X* IT IS NOT COPYRIGHTED, POLYUNSATURATED, OR GUARANTEED IN ANY WAY.`
- V20
- X* USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF IT DESTROYS YOUR CRITICAL DATA BASE,`
- V20
- X* THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. THE AUTHOR ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR`20
- X* ITS USE OR MISUSE AND WILL NOT FIX IT AT A LATER TIME TO MEET`20
- X* YOUR NEEDS. THE DOCUMENTATION IS SKETCHY AND OFTEN MISLEADING.`20
- X* YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. TURN THE PAGE IF YOU DARE.`20
- X EJECT`20
- X
- XAnyway, Funadv was written by Neal White III, using the source of adventure
- Xas a starting point. While there are many locations in FUNADV that will
- Xseem familiar from Adventure, don't bet on it. There are new paths in
- Xnew directions, and things sometimes work the same. Sometimes not.
- XFor example, in Funadv, it is possible to carry enough water to the`20
- Xplant without having to go back.
- X
- XAll files in the distribution are Ascii, except for FUNADV.EXE. which is
- Xin Hexify format. The dehex program source, in Macro, is included.
- X `20
- XThe data file FUNADV.DAT should be placed in the same directory as`20
- XFUNADV.EXE. No logicals, set def, etc, are required.
- X
- XThe local maintainer should create a binary database after setting
- Xthe program up. This allows for a somewhat faster startup. This can
- Xbe accomplished by entering "SAVE" to the "Are you a Wizard" question
- Xat the beginning of the game. This requires write access to the`20
- Xdirectory where the game is stored.

- X 1You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building.
- X 1Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building an
- Vd`20
- X 1down a gully.`20
- X 2You have walked up a hill, still in the forest. The road slopes bac
- Vk`20
- X 2down the other side of the hill. There is a building in the distanc
- Ve.
- X 3You are inside a building, a well house for a large spring.`20
- X 4The stream flows out through a pair of 1 foot diameter sewer pipes.`
- V20
- X 4It would be advisable to use the exit.
- X 5You are in open forest, with a deep valley to one side.`20
- X 6You are in open forest near both a valley and a road.`20
- X 7You are in a valley in the forest beside a stream tumbling along a
- X 7rocky bed.
- X 8At your feet all the water of the stream splashes into a 2-inch slit
- X 8in the rock. Downstream the streambed is bare rock.
- X 9You are in a 20-foot depression floored with bare dirt. Set into th
- Ve`20
- X 9dirt is a strong steel grate mounted in concrete. A dry streambed
- X 9leads into the depression. A narrow trail heads south.`20
- X 10You are standing at the base of an enormous cliff. A huge river is`
- V20
- X 10flowing over the cliff, forming a waterfall. A rainbow can be seen`
- V20
- X 10above the mist and spray. The river continues west, and a forest is
- X 10to the north. A dark hole can be seen in the cliff.
- X 11You are on the north side of a wide river. The river flows from eas
- Vt`20
- X 11to west. A depression is to the north.`20
- X 12You are at a narrow beach of brilliant white sand. the river turns`
- V20
- X 12north into a forest.
- X 13You have been pulled into a giant whirlpool --you are spinning--
- X 13--spinning-- `0A --spinning--
- X 13You have been sucked under!`20
- X 14You are on a wide curving beach. The sand appears green due to the`
- V20
- X 14greenish light which is filtering up from the depths of the river.
- X 14There is a large roman numeral three chiseled deep into the rock wal
- Vl.
- X 14Perhaps you have found the lost third enterance to the cave!
- X 14There is a dark corridor leading to the east.`20
- X 15You are in a small chamber beneath a 3x3 steel grate to the surface.
- X 15A low crawl over cobbles leads inward to the west.
- X 16You are in a very small circular room.
- X 17You are in the main power chamber for the entire cave.
- X 17There is a passage to the north whose walls are covered with lichen.
- X 18You are crawling over cobbles in a low passage. There is a dim ligh
- Vt`20
- X 18at the east end of the passage.`20
- X 19You are in a debris room filled with stuff washed in from the surfac
- Ve.
- X 19A low wide passage with cobbles becomes plugged with mud and debris`
- V20
- X 19here, but an awkward canyon leads upward and west. A note on the wa
- Vll
- X 19says "Magic Word ZZZZADV".
- X 20You are in an awkward sloping east/west canyon.`20
- X 21You are in a splendid chamber thirty feet high. The walls are froze
- Vn`20
- X 21rivers of orange stone. An awkward canyon and a good passage exit
- X 21from east and west sides of the chamber.
- X 22At your feet is a small pit breathing traces of white mist. An east
- X 22passage ends here except for a small crack leading on.
- X 23The crack is far too small for you to follow.`20
- X 24You are at one end of a vast hall stretching forward out of sight to
- X 24the west. There are openings to either side. Nearby, a wide stone`
- V20
- X 24staircase leads downward. The hall is filled with wisps of white mi
- Vst
- X 24swaying to and fro almost as if alive. A cold wind blows up the
- X 24staircase. There is a passage at the top of a dome behind you.`20
- X 25You are on the east bank of a fissure slicing clear across the hall.
- X 25The mist is quite thick here, and the fissure is too wide to jump.
- X 26You are on the west side of the fissure in the hall of mists.`20
- X 27You are in a very low wide passage parallel to and north of the
- X 27 hall of mists.`20
- X 28You are at the west end of hall of mists. A low wide crawl continue
- Vs`20
- X 28west and another goes north. To the south is a little passage 6 fee
- Vt`20
- X 28off the floor.
- X 29You are at the east end of a very long hall apparently without side`
- V20
- X 29chambers. To the east a low wide crawl slants up. To the north a
- X 29round two foot hole slants down.
- X 30You are at the west end of a very long featureless hall. The hall
- X 30joins up with a narrow north/south passage.`20
- X 31You are at a crossover of a high N/S passage and a low E/W one.`20
- X 33this is a low room with a crude note on the wall. the note says,`20
- X 33"You won't get it up the steps".
- X 34You are falling...`0Afalling...`0Afalling...`0A..`0A.`0A.`5E/`0A.`5E

- X 34`0A`0A`0A`0A`0A`0A --=splat=--`20
- X 36The dome is unclimbable.
- X 37You are in the Hall of the Mountain King, with passages off in all
- X 37directions.`20
- X 38You can't get by the snake.`20
- X 39You are in the south side chamber.
- X 40You are in the west side chamber of the Hall of the Mountain King.
- X 40A passage continues west and up here.`20
- X 41You are in a low N/S passage at a hole in the floor. the hole goes`
- V20
- X 41down to an E/W passage.`20
- X 42You are in a large room, with a passage to the south, a passage to t
- Vhe
- X 42west, and a wall of broken rock to the east. There is a large "Y2"
- V on
- X 42a rock in the room's center.
- X 43You are in a jumble of rock, with cracks everywhere.
- X 44You're at a low window overlooking a huge pit, which extends up out
- V of
- X 44sight. A floor is indistinctly visible over 50 feet below. Traces
- V of
- X 44white mist cover the floor of the pit, becoming thicker to the right
- V.`20
- X 44Marks in the dust around the window would seem to indicate that`20
- X 44someone has been here recently. Directly across the pit from you an
- Vd`20
- X 4425 feet away there is a similar window looking into a lighted room.
- V A
- X 44shadowy figure can be seen there peering back at you.`20
- X 45You are in a dirty broken passage. To the east is a crawl. To the`
- V20
- X 45west is a large passage. Above you is a hole to another passage.`20
- X 46You are on the brink of a small clean climbable pit. A crawl leads`
- V20
- X 46west.`20
- X 47You are in the bottom of a small pit with a little stream, which
- X 47enters and exits through tiny slits.
- X 48You are in a large room full of dusty rocks. There is a big hole in
- X 48the floor. There are cracks everywhere, and a passage leading east.
- X 49You are at a complex junction. A low hands and knees passage from t
- Vhe
- X 49north joins a higher crawl from the east to make a walking passage
- X 49going west. There is also a large room above. The air is damp here
- V.`20
- X 50You are in Bedquilt, a long east/west passage with holes everywhere.
- X 50To explore at random select north, south, up, or down.
- X 51You are in an anteroom leading to a large passage to the east. Smal
- Vl`20
- X 51passages go west and up. The remnants of recent digging are evident
- V.`20
- X 51A sign hanging in midair says "Cave under construction beyond this p
- Voint.`20
- X 51PROCEED AT OWN RISK. Witt Construction Company "
- X 51A large pile of rocks can be seen to the south.`20
- X 52You are in the south side of an anteroom leading to a large passage`
- V20
- X 52to the east. A small passage leads west. The remnants of recent di
- Vgging`20
- X 52are evident. A large pile of rocks can be seen to the north.`20
- X 52There is a large room to the south.`20
- X 53You are at Witt's end. Passages lead off in *all* directions.
- X 54You are in a large, square room. The floor is composed of huge slabs
- X 54of mica. In the center of the room there is an enormous fountain.
- X 54it is spraying thin jets of liquid which sparkle all the colors of
- X 54the rainbow. They cascade down into a wide pool at the base.`20
- X 54You can see what appears to be an anteroom to the north.
- X 55You are in a secret canyon which here runs E/W. It crosses over a
- X 55very tight canyon 15 feet below. If you go down you may not be able
- X 55to get back up.`20
- X 56You are at a wide place in a very tight N/S canyon.`20
- X 57The canyon here becomes very tight, but you might be able to squeeze
- V past.
- X 58You are in a tall E/W canyon. A low tight crawl goes 3 feet north a
- Vnd
- X 58seems to open up.`20
- X 59The canyon runs into a mass of boulders -- dead end.
- X 60You are in a secret canyon which exits to the north and east.`20
- X 61You are in a secret canyon which exits to the north and east.`20
- X 62You are in a secret canyon which exits to the north and east.`20
- X 63You are in a secret n/s canyon above a large room.
- X 64You are in a north/south canyon about 25 feet across. The floor is`
- V20
- X 64covered by white mist seeping in from the north. The walls extend
- X 64upward for well over 100 feet. Suspended from some unseen point far
- X 64above you, an enormous two-sided mirror is hanging parallel to and
- X 64midway between the canyon walls. (The mirror is obviously provided`
- V20
- X 64for the use of the Dwarves, who as you know, are extremely vain.) A
- X 64small window can be seen in either wall, some fifty feet up.
- X 65You are at the edge of a large underground reservoir. An opaque clo
- Vud
- X 65of white mist fills the room and rises rapidly upward. The lake is`
- V20
- X 65fed by a river which gurgles quietly somewhere within the dense mist
- V.`20
- X 65The only apparent passage goes back toward the south.`20
- X 65Faint silvery lines are seen on the east wall, which upon closer
- X 65examination, seem to be the outlines of a door set into the wall.`20
- X 65The door seems to be surrounded by silvery scrollwork and runes.
- X 65`0AA rancid stench exudes from a gloomy area to the west.
- X 66With a resounding crack, the doors swing open. You step through
- X 66and enter the great Dwarf works of Khazad-dum.
- X 66The great doors swing shut behind you.
- X 67The doors open before you and you step through. The great doors swi
- Vng
- X 67shut behind you and once more seem to blend into the rock face.`20
- X 68You are in a dark winding passage leading upward to the southeast.
- X 68Mysterious passages and fissures lead off in all directions.
- X 69You are stumbling around in an enourmously complicated network of`20
- X 69tunnels.
- X 70You have stumbled around in many dark passages, and have finally fou
- Vnd
- X 70your way back to the winding passage.`20
- X 71You are in the Chamber of Marzabul. The tomb of Balin, Lord of Mori
- Va`20
- X 71occupies the center of the room. Strewn about the room are the bone
- Vs`20
- X 71and weapons of many Dwarves, apparently massacred in a great battle.
- X 71A small door opens to the west, and a low passage to the northeast.`
- V20
- X 72You are in the second hall of Moria. A slender bridge spans a
- X 72north-south chasm so deep the bottom cannot be seen.
- X 74You are in the first hall of Moria. A slender bridge spans a`20
- X 74north-south chasm so deep the bottom cannot be seen.
- X 75You are in a room whose walls resemble swiss cheese. Obvious passag
- Ves
- X 75go west, east, NE, and NW. Part of the room is occupied by a large`
- V20
- X 75bedrock block.
- X 76You are in the Soft room. The walls are covered with heavy curtains
- V,`20
- X 76the floor with a thick pile carpet. Moss covers the ceiling.`20
- X 77You are at the east end of the Twopit room. The floor here is
- X 77littered with thin rock slabs, which make it easy to descend the pit
- Vs.
- X 77There is a path here bypassing the pits to connect passages from eas
- Vt`20
- X 77and west. There are holes all over, but the only big one is on the`
- V20
- X 77wall directly over the west pit where you can't get to it.
- X 78You are at the bottom of the eastern pit in the twopit room. There
- V is
- X 78a small pool of oil in one corner of the pit.`20
- X 79You are at the west end of the twopit room. There is a large hole i
- Vn`20
- X 79the wall above the pit at this end of the room.`20
- X 80You are at the bottom of the western pit in the twopit room. There
- V is
- X 80a large hole in the wall about 25 feet above you.`20
- X 81You are in a large low circular chamber whose floor is an immense sl
- Vab
- X 81fallen from the ceiling (Slab room). East and west there once were`
- V20
- X 81large passages, but they are now filled with boulders. Low small`20
- X 81passages go north and south, and the south one quickly bends west`20
- X 81around the boulders.
- X 82>$<`20
- X 83You clamber up the plant and scurry through the hole at the top.
- X 84You are in a long, narrow corridor stretching out of sight to the`20
- X 84west. At the eastern end is a hole through which you can see a`20
- X 84profusion of leaves.
- X 85You are in the giant room. The ceiling here is too high up for your
- X 85lamp to show it. Cavernous passages lead east, north, and south. O
- Vn`20
- X 85the west wall is scrawled the inscription, "Fee Fie Foe Foo" sic .`
- V20
- X 86The passage here is blocked by a recent cave-in.
- X 87You are at one end of an immense north/south passage.`20
- X 88You are in a magnificent cavern with a rushing stream, which cascade
- Vs`20
- X 88over a sparkling waterfall into a roaring whirlpool which disappears
- X 88through a hole in the floor. Passages exit to the south and west.
- X 89You are at the top of a steep incline above a large room. You could
- X 89climb down here, but you would not be able to climb up. There is a`
- V20
- X 89passage leading back to the north.
- X 90You are in a very long narrow tunnel which runs northwest and southe
- Vast.
- X 91This is the Oriental room. Ancient oriental cave drawings cover the
- X 91walls. A gently sloping passage leads upward to the north, another`
- V20
- X 91passage leads SE, and a hands and knees crawl leads west.`20
- X 92You are following a wide path around the outer edge of a large caver
- Vn.
- X 92Far below, through a heavy white mist, strange splashing noises can
- V be
- X 92heard. The mist rises up through a fissure in the ceiling. The pat
- Vh`20
- X 92exits to the south and west.
- X 93You are on a narrow ledge in a mist filled cavern.
- X 94You are in an alcove. A small nw path seems to widen after a short`
- V20
- X 94distance. An extremely tight tunnel leads east. It looks like a ve
- Vry
- X 94tight squeeze. An eerie light can be seen at the other end.
- X 95You're in a small chamber lit by an eerie blue light. An extremely`
- V20
- X 95narrow tunnel exits to the west. A dark corridor leads NE.`20
- X 96You're in the Dark-room. A corridor leading south is the only exit.
- X 97You are in a large low room. Crawls lead north, SE, and SW.
- X 99You are in a long winding corridor sloping out of sight in both`20
- X 99directions.`20
- X 100You are on one side of a large, deep chasm. A heavy white mist risi
- Vng
- X 100up from below obscures all view of the far side. A sw path leads aw
- Vay
- X 100from the chasm into a winding corridor.`20
- X 101You are on the far side of the chasm. A NE path leads away from the
- X 101chasm on this side.`20
- X 102You're in a long east/west corridor. A faint rumbling noise can be`
- V20
- X 102heard in the distance.
- X 103The path forks here. The left fork leads northeast. A dull rumblin
- Vg`20
- X 103seems to get louder in that direction. The right fork leads southea

- X 103down a gentle slope. The main corridor enters from the west.`20
- X 104The walls are quite warm here. From the north can be heard a steady
- X 104roar, so loud that the entire cave seems to be trembling. Another
- X 104passage leads south, and a low crawl goes east.`20
- X 105You are in a small chamber filled with large boulders. The walls ar

- X 105a low rumbling.`20
- X 106You are on the edge of a breath-taking view. Far below you is an`20
- X 106active volcano, from which great gouts of molten lava come surging
- X 106out, cascading back down into the depths. The glowing rock fills th
- Ve`20
- X 106farthest reaches of the cavern with a blood-red glare, giving every-
- X 106thing an eerie, macabre appearance. The air is filled with flickeri
- Vng
- X 106sparks of ash and a heavy smell of brimstone. The walls are hot to`
- V20
- X 106the touch, and the thundering of the volcano drowns out all other`20
- X 106sounds. Embedded in the jagged roof far overhead are myriad twisted
- X 106formations composed of pure white alabaster, which scatter the murky
- X 106light into sinister apparitions upon the walls. To one side is a de
- Vep
- X 106gorge, filled with a bizarre chaos of tortured rock which seems to
- X 106have been crafted by the devil himself. An immense river of fire`20
- X 106crashes out from the depths of the volcano, burns its way through th
- Ve`20
- X 106gorge, and plummets into a bottomless pit far off to your left. To`

- X 106the right, an immense geyser of blistering steam erupts continuously
- X 106from a barren island in the center of a sulfurous lake, which bubble

- X 108You are walking along a gently sloping north/south passage lined wit

- X 109You are standing at the entrance to a large, barren room. A sign`20

- X 111You are at a sharp bend in the tunnel. The tunnel slopes`20

- X 115You are at the northeast end of an immense room, even larger than th

- X 127You are in a secret N/S canyon above a sizable passage.`20
- X 128You are in a secret canyon at a junction of three canyons, bearing

- X 128combined.`20
- X 129You're at a low window overlooking a huge pit, which extends up out

- X 130You are in a wide passage. The floor is covered with a fine layer

- X 134You are in a long sloping corridor with ragged sharp walls.`20
