  2. The files listed below are available via an anonymous FTP from arizona.edu
  3. and from the Icon BBS.
  4.

  6. The files are the same for FTP and the BBS, although some are too large
  7. for practical transfer over telephone lines -- it just makes it simpler
  8. to have the same files and documentation both places.
  9.

  11. IMPORTANT: It is important to use binary (image) file transfer for non-text
  12. files.
  13.

  15. Most of the Icon material here corresponds to Version 7 of the language.
  16. Where Version 7 material is not available yet, Version 6 material is
  17. provided.  See the notes that follow.

  20. Files with the suffix .arc are in ``ARC'' format. There are dearchiving
  21. programs for several systems as noted below.
  22.  
  23. Files with the suffix .sit are in "stuffit" format for the Macintosh;
  24. see the notes below.

  27. In some cases, "natural" file names have been modified to conform to
  28. limitations of some operating systems.  You may wish to rename them
  29. at your end.

  32. Note:  in many cases, the files here are images of diskettes.  As such,
  33. they preserve the structure of the physical distribution as referred
  34. to in their documentation.  One consequence of this is that, for example,
  35. there are ARC files within ARC files.

  38. If you pick up a copy of Icon from this machine, please let us know
  39. by mail to icon-project@arizona.edu and include a postal mailing
  40. address.  We will add you to our Icon Newsletter mailing list if you are
  41. not already on it. On request, we'll send you printed copies of the
  42. documentation on installing and using Version 7 of Icon.

  45. Note that the compressed files were produced with Version 4.0 of compress.
  46. The Version 4.0 format is incompatible with earlier versions, notably 3.0, but
  47. compress.bdl is the source for 4.0.  Thus, if your version of compress has
  48. obvious difficulty with these compressed files, just pick up compress.bdl
  49. and use it.
