General suggestions are included for EHusingEH PC-Font to enhance and expand your printing EHapplicationEHs. EH EGEHEGOverviewEH EH EHThe Epson Printer can print only 96 of the 256 possible EHASCIIEH characters. The IBM Graphics Printer prints 196 EHcharacEHters from the same group. PC-Font is a utility program EHEHwhich enables your Epson or IBM Graphics Printer to print EH243EH of the 256 possible characters (the remaining thirteen EHarEHe used for printer control). These new characters include EHEHblock graphic, engineering and scientific, foreign language, EHEHand other special characters. Collectively, these new EHcharacEHters are referred to as the extended character set, or EHEHsimply EGextended charactersEH. EH EHPC-Font works by examining each character to be printed. EHStEHandard characters are passed directly to the printer and EHprEHinted in text mode. Extended characters are printed using EHEHthe printer's graphics mode. Contiguous extended characters EHEHare sent as a single print image which improves performance, EHEHe.g. for horizontal lines. The program is compiled to EHfurthEHer enhance operating speed. EH EHPC-Font allows you to easily control the size, style, and EHdenEHsity (darkness) of your printed material. There are 26 EHdiEHfferent font combinations for Epson Printers and 13 font EHcoEHmbinations for IBM Printers. EH EHPC-Font also allows you to control line spacing and whether EHoEHr not the printer will skip over perforations. Let's EHexamineEH how you can use these features to expand the EHprintingEH applications and enhance the professionalism of EHyourEH printed output. EH EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG3EH EH EH EHEHEHEGThe Extended Character SetEH EH EGEHEGGraphic Characters:EH The IBM PC character set contains three EHEHgraphic fonts (figure #1) composed of single, double, and EHsolEHid lines. Other extended characters form corners and EHarroEHws to facilitate the drawing of borders, organizational EHcEHharts, flow diagrams, etc. EH EHWould you like to draw -solid horizontal lines-Ç instead of EHmaking do with b_r_o_k_e_n_ u_n_d_e_r_s_c_o_r_e_ c_h_a_r_a_c_t_e_r_s_? Or how EHEHabout solid vertical lines, which would visually delineate EHmuEHltiple columns, or conversely, direct your readers to a EHparEHticular area? Presently, the only option is to imitate EHveEHrtical lines with asterisks or colons. EH EHAlthough the Personal Computer makes these characters EHavailabEHle, Epson Printers cannot print any of the 49 graphic EHEHcharacters. The IBM Graphics Printer prints most, but in EHdoiEHng so translates the 29 double line font characters into EHsEHingle line characters. PC-Font allows both printers to EHprinEHt all 49 block graphic characters EGat twice the densityEH EH(dEHarkness) of the standard IBM Graphics Printer characters. EHEHThese fonts can be used in a variety of ways to enhance the EHvEHisual effectiveness of your printed output. EH EGEHEGEngineering/Scientific & Foreign language Characters:EH The EHIBMEH PC also supports 30 engineering and scientific EHcharactersEH (figure #2) and a group of 42 foreign language EHchaEHracters (figure #3). Epson Printers cannot print any of EHtEHhese characters; the IBM Printer can print all of them. EHPC-EHFont gives Epson Printers the ability to print all the EHchaEHracters in both groups. EH EGEHEGSpecial Characters:EH There are twenty-five special characters EHEHincluding the "bullet" (used to highlight a thought), EHassorteEHd arrows to show four directions of movement or flow, EHEHfractions, playing card suits, etc. (figure #4) Again, EHEpsonEH Printers cannot print these characters; the IBM EHPrinterEH prints only ten. PC-Font makes these 25 characters EHaEHvailable to both printers as part of the extended character EHEHset. EH EHTo sumarize, PC-Font expands the Epson Printer character set EHEHby 151% and the IBM Printer character set by 23%. The EHAEHEHEHdvanced Operations Section contains information on how to EHenEHter these characters from your editor or word processor. EH EGEHEGAn Assortment of FontsEH EH EHBoth the Epson and IBM Printers are capable of producing 15 EHdEHistinct fonts by varying the size and density of EHcharacters.EH Epson Printers can also print most combinations EHEHof size and density in either a standard or italic style, EHincEHreasing the total number of font options to 28. EH EHIf you use an editor to create documents, changing fonts EHusuaEHlly requires searching through the printer manual for a EHcEHombination of esoteric printer control characters to EHtriggerEH the change. Next the document must be edited and EHtheEH characters embedded in the text. Using a word processor EHEHgenerally make the job somewhat easier because several EHprinteEHr control characters are replaced with a single EHEnglisEHh-like word or intuitive abbrevation. However, most EHwEHord processors do not support all the font combinations. EH EHPC-Font allows you to EGeasilyEH select the popular fonts (13 EHforEH the IBM, 25 for the Epson) on a document basis. EHChangingEH fonts within a document is also possible. Font EHvariEHations are described below. EH EGEHEGFont Density:EH Increasing font density can dramatically EHcontrEHast various portions of your existing documents (figure EHEH# 5). Typical matrix printer output can be transformed into EHEHEGcorrespondence quality memos, letters, and documentsEH. If EHyouEH photocopy the original, a higher font density improves EHthEHe quality of the copies. EH EHBlock graphic characters are printed automatically at double EHEHthe normal density. The remaining extended characters can EHonEHly be printed at the standard density. Text characters EHcanEH be printed on the same line as block grahic characters EHinEH emphasized density, but not in double strike or EHcorrespondEHence density. EH EG EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG5EH FH FH FHEGFont Size:FH Changing font size opens up a wide range of new FHaFHFHFHpplications (figure #6). The special SÇcondensed fontTH FHprovideFHs 13.2 characters per inch at approximately 14 lines FHpFHer inch, which allows you to conveniently place a diskette FHdFHirectory on a small enough piece of paper to store inside FHthFHe diskette slipcover. FH EHEHEHThe FHcompressed fontsEH allow up to 136 characters on 8½" x 11" paper EHEHor 233 characters on 14½" x 11" paper. This can be useful EHfEHor large spreadsheet output. The compressed fonts also use EHEH8 lines per inch instead of the normal six to cut paper EHcostsEH (a potential 33% savings). EH EHThe FHdouble wide fontsEH are useful for EHEHoverhead transparencies, title pages, chapter or section EHheadEHings, etc. EH EHBlock graphic characters are printed in the standard size to EHEHpreserve vertical alignment. Changing font size within a EHlinEHe will also cause mis-alignment of block graphic EHcharacterEHs. The remaining extended characters can only be EHprEHinted in the standard size (with a maximum of 136 EHcharacterEHs per line). EH EHEpson Printers can add flair to documents by mixing italics EHwEHith the other font size and density options (figure #7). EHExtEHended characters can only be printed in the standard EHstyleEH. EH EGEHEGSkipping Over PerforationsEH EH EHWord processors by their nature offer formatting options to EHsEHpecify the number of lines per page. However, editors, EHspreEHadsheets, and other programs generally produce a EHcontinuoEHus stream of data which leaves no white space and EHpriEHnts over the page perforations. Skipping over EHperforationEHs improves both the readability and EHprofessionalisEHm of your output. PC-Font allows you to EHeasilyEH turn on the skip over perforation feature in Epson or EHEHIBM Graphic Printers. EH EG EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG6EH EH EH EHEGLine SpacingEH EHEHEH EHLine spacing can be decreased to reduce paper costs or EHexpandEHed to improve the legibility of a document. Double or EHEHtriple spacing a rough draft leaves white space for changes EHaEHnd corrections. PC-Font provides four line spacing options. EH EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG7EH EH EH EHEH EGEHEGSYSTEM REQUIREMENTSEH EH EHThis section covers the hardware and software necessary to EHprEHint files using PC-Font. EH EHTo use PC-Font you need: EH EGEHEGHardwareEH EH EH IBM PC, PC/XT, PCjr, or PC compatible with a minimum of EHEH 96kb memory EHEH One diskette drive EHEH Any monitor capable of displaying 80 columns: EHEH One of the following printers: EHEH - Epson MX (with Graftrax), RX, or FX Printer EHEH - IBM Graphics Printer EH EGEHEGSoftwareEH EH EH DOS Version 1.1 or higher. EH EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG8EH EH EH EHEHEHEGWORKING WITH FILESEH EH EHPC-Font will print files produced by a variety of programs EHraEHnging from editors and word processors to spreadsheets and EHEHcompilers. The term file is used to describe output from any EHEHsource. The only requirement is that the file EGmust beEH EHstoredEH in ASCII format. The following sections contain EHnotesEH on how to use PC-Font with files created from an EHassortEHment of programs. EH EGEHEGEditorsEH EH EHNearly all editors, e.g. the IBM Professional Editor, store EHEHfiles in ASCII format. Other editors, e.g. the IBM EHPersonalEH Editor, require an optional parameter (in this EHinstaEHnce the option is called "notabs") to be appended to EHtheEH usual SAVE or FILE procedure in order to store the file EHiEHn ASCII format. EH EGEHEGWord ProcessorsEH EH EHASCII format is not as common among word processing EHprograms.EH For example, EasyWriter(tm) files are stored in a EHEHformat close enough to ASCII to be printed by PC-Font. EH(YouEH must insert a form feed (ASCII 12) as the first EHcharacteEHr of the first line of text.) However, this method EHpEHrohibits using the word processor's text formatting EHcapabiliEHties. EH EHMany word processors, e.g. PeachText(tm), allow you to EH"prinEHt" a document back to a diskette file (in ASCII format) EHEHinstead of to the printer. This method preserves the EHintendeEHd document structure by translating any formatting EHcomEHmands used by the word processor, e.g. headers, footers, EHEHpage breaks, etc. into printer control characters. The new EHfEHile is called a "print image" file and contains both text EHanEHd printer characters. EH EHPC-Font can make the intermediate step of creating a print EHimEHage file worth the effort. Now you can enhance your EHdocumeEHnts with block graphics and diagrams or any of the EHotheEHr extended characters. Remember, EGallEH the printer EHoptionsEH are now available to enhance your documents. Tips EHonEH using print image files are covered later on in this EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG9EH EH EH EHsectiEHon, and the Advanced Operations Section contains some EHpoEHEHEHpular printer options. EH EGEHEGBASICEH EH EHBASIC source code can easily be printed. Simply SAVE the EHfilEHe with the ASCII format option, e.g. SAVE "myfile.bas",A EHEH(The quotation marks are required.) EH EGEHEGSpreadsheetsEH EH EHOutput from most spreadsheets, e.g. Lotus 1-2-3(tm) and EHVisicEHalc(tm) can be routed back to a diskette file instead EHofEH being printed. PC-Font options can then be used to EHenhancEHe the font density, add headings, or reduce the font EHsiEHze to fit larger spreadsheets on a page. EH EGEHEGPrint Image FilesEH EH EHAlthough the term print image suggests an exact diskette EHduplEHicate of what is printed, experience points out EHinconsistEHancies. Each word processor creates print image EHfilEHes in a different way, with unique variations from the EHtruEHe print image. Following are some general observations EHwhiEHch may be useful. EH EGEHEGFormat Commands:EH Place format commands on the same line as EHteEHxt, instead of using a separate line. The following two EHexaEHmples illustrate this concept with PeachText(tm) EHcommands:EH EH EH Separate Single EHEH lines lines EH EH \font3\ EHEH Title \font3\Title\font1\ EHEH \font1\ EH EHThe commands enclosed between the "\" marks print the title EHiEHn a higher font density. Both methods produce the same EHeffeEHct when printed from the word processor. However, when EHpEHrinted back to a diskette, i.e. print image, the first EHmethoEHd uses two additional lines in the file while the EHsecondEH method uses no additional lines. If you were setting EHEHconditional page breaks at 66 lines per page, the print EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG10EH EH EH EHimageEH may contain 68, depending on the sophistication of the EHEHEHEHword processor. Placing format commands in line with the EHtexEHt preserves the intended page structure. EH EGEHEGHeaders & Footers:EH The page length may have to be decreased EHbEHy the number of lines used for headers and footers. For EHexaEHmple, assume a 66 line page with two lines of header text EHEHand three lines of footer text. When printing to a EHdiskette,EH it may be necessary to specify a 61 line page to EHprEHoduce the correct format. EH EGEHEGUnderlining:EH Some word processors underline by printing a EHlinEHe containing underlined text twice. The second line EHoverpEHrints the first with the word processor keeping track EHofEH where to place underscore characters. However, when EHprintEHed back to a diskette the command to overprint EHgenerallyEH results in the underscore characters being printed EHEHon the line below the text, instead of on the same line. EH EHThere are two alternatives. The first is to let the printer EHEHkeep track of underlined text, instead of the word EHprocessor.EH A beneficial side effect is that the printer EHprodEHuces solid underlining rather that the broken line EHeffectEHresulting from underscores. The underline command is EHtEHhe ASCII sequence "27,45,1" to begin underlining and EH"27,45,EH128" to end underlining, without the quotation marks. EHEH(ASCII sequences are discussed in the Advanced Operations EHSecEHtion.) EH EHThe second alternative is to emphasize the appropriate text EHuEHsing a higher font density rather than underlining it. EHWordEH processors refer to this as bolding. This feature, like EHEHunderlining, can be controlled by the word processor or the EHpEHrinter. (The Advanced Operations Section contains the EHprintEHer control codes to change font density.) EH EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG11EH EH EH EHEHEHEGBASIC OPERATIONSEH EH EHThis section covers how to start, suspend, and stop the EHprintEHing of a document. Also covered are how to use command EHlEHine parameters to override the defaults for an entire EHdocumeEHnt. EH EGEHEGSetting Document Defaults Using Command Line ParametersEH EH EHPC-Font is started from the command line (the DOS prompt) by EHEHtyping "PC-FONT" (without the quotes), the name of the file EHtEHo be printed, and any additional parameters. A description EHoEHf the command, the optional parameters, and examples are EHproEHvided below. EH EGEH EGPC-FONT filespec [1x] [2x] [3x] [4x] [5x] [6x]EH EH EGEH EGPC-FONT:EH invokes the program from the default EH drivEHe. The default drive can be overriden by EH EHspecifying an explicit drive. EH EGEH EGfilespec:EH entered in the format "d:nnnnnnnn.eee" EH wEHhere: EH EGEH EGdEH - is an optional drive designation used when EH theEH file to be printed is not on the default EH dEHrive. EH EGEH EGnEH - is the file name, maximum of eight EH characters.EH EH EGEH EGeEH - is the file extension, maximum of three EH characEHters. EH EGEH EGNote:EH the filespec must be separated from the EH wordEH "PC-FONT" by exactly one space. EH EGEH EGParameter conventions:EH EH EH Brackets are not part of the parameters, but EH indEHicate that each parameter is optional. EH EGEH EGPC-FONT myfile.ovh 1m 2iEH: Prints the file using correspondence EH EHdensity, double wide size, and italics style, e.g. for EH overEHhead transparencies. EH EGEH EGPC-FONT myfile.asc 5^ 1b 4yEH: Prints the file using the EH compressEHed font, skips over perforations, and defines the EH caEHret "^" as an alternate escape character. Notice that EH theEH parameters may be specified in any order. EH EGEHEGBatch FilesEH EH EHIf you repeatedly use the same command line parameters, EHplaciEHng them in a batch file can cut down the number of EHkeystEHrokes necessary to start PC-Font. The file should EHcontaEHin a single line along with the commonly used options. EH EHFor instance, the line containing "PC-FONT %1 1g 4y" EH(enteredEH without quotation marks) in a file named PCF.BAT EHwouEHld allow you to print a file using emphasized density and EHEHalso skip over perforations. From the command line you EHwouldEH type typing "PCF filespec" (entered without quotation EHmEHarks). The "%1" takes on the name of filespec, i.e. the EHfiEHle you wish to be printed. EHHoweEHver, to reflect the actual number of lines in the file EHthEHe line counter is only incremented once. EH EHPC-Font can recover from minor errors, e.g. accidentally EHremEHoving a diskette which contains the file being printed. EHOEHther errors are more severe, e.g. turning off the printer EHcEHauses all printer options to be lost. In either case, an EHapEHpropriate message describing the error is displayed on EHlineEH 24 (the second line from the bottom) of your screen. EH EGEHEGHow to Suspend PrintingEH EH EHIf you wish to temporarily suspend the printing of a file, EHhoEHld down the [Ctrl] key and press the [Num Lock] key. To EHresEHume printing, press any key. EH EGEHEGHow to Stop PrintingEH EH EHShould you wish to cancel the file being printed, simply EHpresEHs the [ESC] key. PC-Font will EGimmediatelyEH halt at the EHenEHd of the line being printed and return you to the DOS EHprompEHt. While the previous EHsEHection discussed how to print an entire document using EHcommaEHnd line parameters. This section describes how to EHchangeEH fonts and other printer options within a document. EHAlEHso included are suggestions on how to enter the extended EHchEHaracter set characters. EH EGEHEGEntering the Extended Character Set CharactersEH EH EHThe ASCII character set contains 256 characters. Each EHcharacEHter is represented by a number ranging from 0 to 255. EHEHFor example, the standard alphanumeric characters fall EHwithinEH the ASCII range of 32-127. The block graphic, EHengineeEHring, scientific, and foreign language characters are EHEHassigned to ASCII numbers ranging from 127 to 254. The EHremaiEHning special characters have ASCII numbers larger than EH1EH27 or smaller than 32. EH EHRecall that PC-Font prints 243 of these ASCII characters. EHThEHe remaining thirteen are used to control an assortment of EHpEHrinter options, which are covered in the following section. EH EHHow are 256 different characters entered from the Personal EHCoEHmputer's 83 key keyboard? As it turns out, the hardware EHalEHlows every character except ASCII 0 to be entered by EHholdinEHg down the [Alt] key and typing the ASCII number EHcorresEHponding to the desired character on the numeric EHkeypad.EH This procedure is called keypad character entry. EH EHMost editors, e.g. the IBM Personal Editor and IBM EHProfessioEHnal Editor, allow entry of extended characters in EHthEHis manner. However, some word processors have disabled EHthiEHs valuable function. For example, PeachText(tm) allows EHkeEHypad character entry but WordStar(tm) does not. EH EHTwo additional points about entering extended characters. EHFiEHrst, frequent use requires remembering a character's EHcorresEHponding ASCII number. Appendix B is a handy cross EHrefeEHrence designed to facilitate looking up an extended EHcharaEHcter's ASCII number. EH EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG19EH EH EH EHSecond, each extended character can require four or five EHkeysEHEHEHtrokes. If your editor or word processor has a macro EHdefEHinition feature (macros allow you to assign a series of EHkeEHystrokes and/or commands to be executed by typing a one or EHEHtwo key sequence) consider assigning the commonly used EHcharacEHters in the extended character set to a macro. EHKeyboarEHd enhancers, e.g. Prokey(tm), provide an alternate EHmeaEHns of generating extended character set characters if EHyourEH editor or word processor doesn't contain a macro EHdefinitEHion feature. EH EGEHEGChanging Fonts & Other Printer Options Within a DocumentEH EH EHIn all, there are roughly 50 commands for both the Epson and EHEHIBM Graphic Printers. These commands can change font size, EHsEHtyle, or density, skip to a new page, set the form length, EHcEHhange line spacing, and backspace (in order to overprint EHspeEHcial characters), to name just a few. As you may have EHgueEHssed, PC-Font's command line parameters are translated EHintEHo printer control codes and sent to the printer before EHpriEHnting your file. Unless overidden, the EGentire documentEH EHisEH printed according to the parameters specified on the EHcommaEHnd line. EH EHHowever, printer control codes can also be embedded within EHthEHe text to emphasize words, lines, or paragraphs. Some EHpopuEHlar control codes are listed in Appendix C; additional EHsoEHurces of printer information are listed in Appendix D. EH EHIn essence, printer control codes are sequences of ASCII EHcharEHacters which the printer recognizes as commands instead EHoEHf as text. A control code sequence consists of one to EHthreeEH characters and EGare not printedEH. Most control code EHsequEHences begin with an ASCII 27, otherwise known as the EH"escEHape" character. EH EHIf your editor or word processor does not allow you to enter EHEHan escape character from the keyboard or keypad, you can EHstilEHl create printer control codes by using the alternate EHescEHape character feature, which is covered in the next EHsectioEHn. EH EHEditors generally allow you to enter control codes, one at a EHEHtime, directly into the text. In contrast, each word EHprocessEHor has a unique set of printer commands which are EHtranEHslated into printer control code sequences when the EGEG EGPC-Font v2.04 User's Guide EH EG20EH EH EH EHdocumEHent is actually printed. These commands can still be EHuseEHEHEHd (assuming the document will be converted to a print EHimagEHe file). Any functions not supported by your word EHprocesEHsor can be entered directly as a printer control code EHsEHequence and processed by PC-Font. EH EGEHEGDefining an Alternate Escape CharacterEH EH EHThis section is only applicable for editors or word EHprocessorEHs that will not allow you to enter the escape EHcharacEHter (ASCII 27) from the keyboard or keypad. EH EHYou can still have access to various font options by EHdefiningEH an alternate escape character to PC-Font. This EHalloEHws you to have PC-Font treat a EGsecond characterEH as an EHescEHape character. Having two logical escape characters EHinsureEHs compatability with any printer control codes EHautomatiEHcally generated by your word processors format EHcommanEHds. EH EHWhile editing the document to be printed simply type in the EHcEHharacter you wish to have treated as the escape character EHwhEHerever the escape character would normally be entered. EHForEH example, suppose the carot "^" is chosen to be used as EHanEH alternate escape character. A word being printed in the EHiEHtalics font would have been preceeded by the escape EHcharacteEHr and the number 5, e.g. "ε5". (The "ε" is used EHhereEH for example only to represent the escape character, EHASCIEHI 27, which cannot be printed.) Instead, it would now EHbeEH preceeded by a carot and the number 5, e.g. "^5". EH EHWhen the document is to be printed PC-Font must be informed EHoEHf the change. Parameter number six is used to define the EHalEHternate escape character. In the above example, you would EHEHtype the name of the file to be printed, a 6^ to define the EHaEHlternate escape character, and any other options would be EHenEHtered as command line parameters.
