  15. You are encouraged to copy the PC-File+ diskettes and share them freely with
  16. others.  You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at your
  17. own pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace.  This is not a
  18. crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete working version of the program.

  20. If, after trying out the programs, you decide to continue to use them, you
  21. are trusted to purchase PC-File+ from the program's author, or from an
  22. authorized dealer.

  25. Why pay at all?

  41.    *  You help to keep software prices down, by supporting a
  42.       distribution method which doesn't rely on expensive

  46. So please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
  47. your friends and associates.  But also be aware of the following
  48. restrictions, designed to protect the community of Shareware users and
  49. authors, and to prevent greedy people from taking unfair advantage of the
  50. trust, hard work, and good will of Shareware authors:

  52. 1. No price or consideration may be charged. However, a distribution cost may
  53.    be charged for the cost of the diskettes, shipping, and handling, not to
  54.    exceed $10 total.
  55.  
  56. 2. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified nor deleted.
  57.  
  58. 3. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
  59.  
  60. 4. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.
  61.  
  62. 5. The printed manual cannot be copied or reproduced in any way.
  63.  
  64. 6. In the case of distribution via computerized "bulletin boards" or through
  65.    any other telecommunications link the following must be done:
  66.     *  X-Modem or some other error checking protocol must be used
  67.     *  All ButtonWare programs (and documentation files) must be transferred
  68.        in a library format.  That means the files have all been combined
  69.        into one file.  You can get assistance with this procedure from the
  70.        Technical Support Department at ButtonWare.

  72. 7. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
  73.    you must provide them with the following written notice:

  104.                       PRINTING A COPY OF THE MANUAL

  107. If you received this disk from a friend, associate, computer club, or
  108. bulletin board, then you are evaluating the program.
  109.  
  110. We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate
  111. PC-File+.  The program utilizes clear, informative menus.  Help screens
  112. are always a keystroke away (Alt-H).  Also, the file "CARD" on disk #2 is
  113. a quick reference card with a summary of all the commands available in the
  114. program.
  115.  
  116. This is sufficient for most people to do a good evaluation of the program.
  117. However, some people prefer to have a complete copy of the printed manual.
  118.  
  119. A complete copy of the printed manual for PC-File+ is available on a
  120. floppy disk, to help you with your evaluation of the program. It's about
  121. 300 pages long, so you'll need a lot of time, patience, and paper to print
  122. it out.

  124. The manual on disk has been mailed to all computer clubs, user groups,
  125. shareware disk dealers, and bulletin board operators that ButtonWare is
  126. aware of.  You can obtain the manual on disk from one of these groups.
  127. Just ask for the PC-File+ disk number 3, or the PC-File+ manual on disk.

  129. In order to keep costs down, the manual on disk is not included with
  130. purchased copies of the program and cannot be purchased directly from
  131. ButtonWare.  Purchased copies of PC-File+ include a complete printed copy
  132. of the manual, typeset and bound.

  140. Please make certain that the CONFIG.SYS file on your bootup disk contains
  141. this statement:   FILES=20
  142. The number may be 20 or larger. This is covered on page 20 in the manual.
  143.  
  144. If you do not currently have a CONFIG.SYS file on your boot disk you can
  145. add it easily by typing in the following lines after booting up:
  146.     CD  \
  147.     COPY  CON:  CONFIG.SYS
  148.     FILES=20
  149. Press (Enter) after each line. After the last line has been entered press
  150. the F6 key and a ^Z will appear. Press (Enter). You should now reboot the
  151. computer, so that your new CONFIG.SYS file will become active.

  154. There are some other text files on your supplemental program disk
  155. worth taking a look at:
  156.     CARD     - a reference card (summary of commands)
  157.     CHANGES  - detailed account of differences between PC-File+ and

  159.     PRODUCTS - Short review of ButtonWare products, and an order form
  160.     RESPONSE - A user feedback survey. We really like to receive these
  161.                from you.

  164. When defining a database using the PAINT option, you do not have to include
  165. field names on the data entry screen.  If you omit the name, PC-File+ will
  166. temporarily name the field X.  You can use the Name command of the
  167. Utilities menu to rename the field to a more meaningful name.
