  189.                        Introducing PROCOMM PLUS UK

  192. PROCOMM PLUS UK is the "try before you buy" version of PROCOMM PLUS. DATASTORM 
  193. has created it to allow you to "test" PROCOMM PLUS before committing your hard 
  194. earned dollars.  This has benefits for both the users and the authors as 
  195. described below. 
  196.  
  197. First of all, though, you must be aware that PROCOMM PLUS and PROCOMM PLUS UK 
  198. ARE NOT FREE SOFTWARE, NOR ARE THEY IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN.  Both programs are 
  199. fully copyrighted works protected to the full extent of US and international 
  200. copyright law. 
  201.  
  202. Why allow a program "test"?  PROCOMM PLUS UK is based on a marketing technique 
  203. called "shareware" or "user-supported software", which is a means for the 
  204. computing community to receive quality software while directly supporting 
  205. authors.  It is based on the idea that the value and utility of software is 
  206. often best assessed by the user on his or her own system.  Only after using a 
  207. program can one really determine whether it serves personal applications, 
  208. needs and tastes. 
  209.  
  210. The benefits to users are fairly obvious: you are allowed to thoroughly 
  211. evaluate the software before purchasing it.  How many times have you purchased 
  212. an expensive piece of software only to find that it doesn't do what you need? 
  213.  
  214. Software authors benefit by creating a distribution channel of satisfied users 
  215. who recommend and pass along their product.  This "pyramid effect" can be a 
  216. very effective marketing technique, and is vastly less expensive than 
  217. traditional marketing techniques.  This is not to say that "tests" and more 
  218. traditional methods like magazine advertising are mutually exclusive. They may 
  219. be used together very effectively to target different segments of the market. 
  220.  
  221. What does this mean to you?  While you are granted a limited license to 
  222. evaluate the program on a trial basis, regular use of the program requires 
  223. purchase.  What is a "trial basis"?  Kicking the program around over a weekend 
  224. to see how it works is certainly using it on a trial basis.  Installing and 
  225. using the program in a production test environment for two weeks is trial use. 
  226. Using the software twice a week for regular work for three months is not and 
  227. therefore requires purchase.  Using the program regularly for any regular task, 
  228. especially if it has replaced other software, is not trial use.  These examples 
  229. are not intended as definitive rules, but more as general guidelines. 
  230.  
  231. You are not allowed to modify the software under any conditions.  We do, 
  232. however, encourage you to create "add-on" support utilities and programs to 
  233. enhance your and others' enjoyment of the program. 
  234.  
  235. You may copy the program for the trial use of others subject to the rules 
  236. outlined in the previous section "Limited License to Copy".  In general, you 
  237. may only copy the program in complete and unmodified form, as we distribute it.

  239. You may not charge any fee for copies of the program without written 
  240. permission from DATASTORM.  This applies especially to disk vendors.  Some 
  241. services mislead customers into thinking they have purchased the software, 
  242. rather than just the disk and duplication service.  If you have purchased this

  251. You may not include PROCOMM PLUS UK with any other product, whether hardware or 
  252. software, without specific license.  For example, you may not include PROCOMM 
  253. PLUS UK on the hard drives of computers you  sell, or include it with copies of 
  254. software you have developed.

  256.                              Purchasing PROCOMM PLUS
  257.  
  258. After using PROCOMM PLUS UK for a while, you need to decide if you want to 
  259. continue using it on a regular basis.  If not, please feel free to continue 
  260. copying it for the trial use of others, or to pass your copy along to a 
  261. friend.

  263. If you do decide to continue using it, it must be purchased.  You can purchase 
  264. the regular version of PROCOMM PLUS directly from SHAREWARE MARKETING; it can 
  265. also be found at many retailers around the UK and Eire.

  267. Please note that there are two versions of the software: PROCOMM PLUS and 
  268. PROCOMM PLUS UK.  This version may be copied and used for evaluation as 
  269. described above.  The purchased version of PROCOMM PLUS, however, may only be 
  270. copied for backup purposes.  After receiving your purchased copy of PROCOMM 
  271. PLUS you may continue to copy PROCOMM PLUS UK for friends; you may not copy 
  272. PROCOMM PLUS.

  304. PROCOMM PLUS UK is everything you need to go on-line.  Here's a summary of its
  305. major features:

  307. Fully-Automated Dialling Directory 
  308.  
  309. You can keep the names and numbers of up to 200 computers in a Dialling 
  310. Directory--and you can create and use any number of Dialling Directories. 
  311. PROCOMM PLUS UK lets you include up to 10 dialling codes in your Dialling 
  312. Directory entries, so you can easily access long-distance carriers or dial out 
  313. through a PBX system. You can have PROCOMM PLUS UK dial either a single number 
  314. or a list of numbers, and PROCOMM PLUS UK will automatically redial if a 
  315. number is busy. It keeps track of the date of your last call, and the total 
  316. number of calls for each entry. In addition, it keeps a log of the date and 
  317. time of all calls so that you can easily verify your telephone bills.

  389.                     Starting PROCOMM PLUS UK

  391. What You'll Need
  392.  
  393.    -  Computer: an IBM PC, XT, or AT computer (or a computer that is compatible
  394.       with any of these).
  395.  
  396.    -  Memory: at least 210K of available RAM.
  397.  
  398.    -  Operating System: PC-DOS or MS-DOS, version 2.0 or later.
  399.  
  400.    -  Disk Drives: at least one floppy-disk drive, or at least one floppy-disk
  401.       drive and one hard-disk drive.
  402.  
  403.    -  Display: A monochrome monitor with a monochrome display adapter; a
  404.       composite monitor with a Colour Graphics Adapter; an Enhanced Colour
  405.       Display with an Enhanced Graphics Adapter; or a monitor and display
  406.       adapter compatible with any of these.

  408.    -  Modem: Virtually any intelligent modem, Hayes-compatible or not, 
  409.       external or internal, any speed. NB: V23 bot supported.

  419. Installing PROCOMM PLUS UK
  420.  
  421. If you received PROCOMM PLUS UK directly from DATASTORM, or from an authorized 
  422. distributor, there is very little to do to install it.  Simply copy the 
  423. contents of the distribution disk onto a working diskette or your hard disk.  
  424. Be aware that PROCOMM PLUS UK will create a number of support files, so leave 
  425. plenty of room. 
  426.  
  427. If you downloaded PROCOMM PLUS UK from a BBS or on-line service, it
  428. probably came in archived format.  A file archive, usually identified with a
  429. file extension of .ARC, is a group of related files that have been collected
  430. together and then compressed into a single file.  Before using the files within
  431. the archive they must be un-archived into their original and separate form.
  432. This can be achieved using any of a number of "archive utilities" such as
  433. ARC.EXE (from System Enhancement Associates), ARCE.EXE (also from SEA) or
  434. PKXARC.COM (from PKWARE).  These programs use different command syntax; to get
  435. a listing of the proper commands to use, execute the program without any
  436. parameters.  For example, entering
  437.  
  438.       PKXARC [CR]
  439.  
  440. will give you a listing of the command options available for PKXARC.
  441.  
  442. NB: Some online services are now using PKZIP to compress their files.
  443.  
  444. Setting Up PROCOMM PLUS UK
  445.  
  446. Setting Up Your Modem
  447.  
  448. Before you can start using PROCOMM PLUS UK, you need to make sure that
  449. your modem is set up properly.
  450.  
  451. What you need to do to your modem depends on whether you have an internal 
  452. modem (a modem on a board inside your computer) or an external modem (a modem 
  453. separate from your computer). 
  454.  
  455. To set up an external modem
  456.  
  457. If you have not already connected your modem to your computer and to the 
  458. telephone line, do so now--your modem's manual describes how to do this. 
  459.  
  460. Most modems have a set of switches that set certain operating characteristics 
  461. for the modem.  You'll need to check the setting of two of them in order to 
  462. use PROCOMM PLUS UK to its fullest. 
  463.  
  464. Look in your modem's manual for information about these switches. (The manual 
  465. may refer to them as "modem switches," "configuration switches," or "DIP 
  466. switches.") 
  467.  
  468. You'll need to set two of your modem's switches:
  469.  
  470.    -  The CD (Carrier Detect) Switch. This is switch 6 on most Hayes-
  471.       compatible modems. Set this switch so that your modem controls the CD 
  472.       line (with the other setting of this switch, the CD line is not 
  473.       controlled by the modem).

  479.    -  The DTR (Data Terminal Ready) Switch. This is switch 1 on most Hayes-
  480.       compatible modems. Set this switch so that your modem monitors the status
  481.       of the DTR line (with the other setting of this switch, the modem ignores
  482.       the status of the DTR line).
  483.  
  484. Note: If your modem doesn't have switches, it will have software commands you 
  485. can use for the same purpose.  Look in your modem's manual to find the 
  486. commands that control CD and DTR, then include these commands in the modem's 
  487. initialization command. On the popular Quattro modem the command AT&C1 sets 
  488. DTR to the true state 
  489.  
  490. To set up an internal modem
  491.  
  492. An internal modem can be set to work on any of two (or more) "COM ports"
  493. (communications ports).
  494.  
  495. COM ports--also known as serial ports--are typically used for (in addition to 
  496. modems) serial printers and mouse pointing devices. If such a device is 
  497. already connected to your computer, it is using one of your COM ports, and you 
  498. won't be able to use that port for your modem. You should find out which COM 
  499. port is used for that device, then make sure your modem is set to work on a 
  500. different COM port. (Refer to your modem's manual for information about 
  501. setting its COM port.) 
  502.  
  503. It doesn't matter which COM port your modem will be using, as long as you tell 
  504. PROCOMM PLUS UK which COM port that is. PROCOMM PLUS UK can work with any of 
  505. eight COM ports--COM 1 through COM 8. 
  506.  
  507. Note: If your modem has a CD or a DTR switch, set it as described above for an 
  508. external modem. If it doesn't have these switches, check your modem's manual 
  509. to see if there are software commands you can use for the same purpose. If 
  510. there are, include these commands in the modem's initialization command. 
  511.  
  512. Setting Up Your Computer
  513.  
  514. To run PROCOMM PLUS UK most efficiently, you'll need to make sure that
  515. your CONFIG.SYS file and your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contain certain commands.
  516.  
  517. To set up a hard-disk system
  518.

  570. to get started is make sure that PROCOMM PLUS UK knows which COM port your 
  571. modem is using.  To do so, access the Line Settings option (Alt-P) after

  679. is the ASPECT script language.  ASPECT is an extremely powerful, full-featured

  681. advanced screen handling, string manipulation, file I/O, mathematical 
  682. functions, branching, memory variables, subroutines and more.

  689. Each line in an ASPECT script file begins with a command word and may be 
  690. followed by one or more "parameters," which specify the particular way you 
  691. want the command to work. Commands and parameters conform to certain rules 
  692. which are called "syntax." Like the syntax of spoken language, "command 
  693. syntax" ensures that the meaning of the command statement is clear and 
  694. unambiguous. ASPECT script files have a file extension of ASP.
