- DATE: JANUARY 28, 1985
-
- TO: ALL RBBS-PC SYSTEM OPERATORS
- (RBBS-PC CPC12.2D & LATER)
-
- SUBJECT: RE-WRITE THE DOCUMENTATION FOR
- RBBS-PC CPC12.3B
-
- FROM: DAYTON RBBS 513-258-0020 10pm to 10am
-
-
- We are in the process of re-writing the documentation
- for the 12.3b version of RBBS-PC. We find that many areas
- are not covered very well. There are just too many places not
- explained at all or the details are so lacking that the sysop
- must learn by trial and error. Also, too often the authors
- of the present documentation have assumed that the sysop
- or the "hope to be sysop" has more knowledge than he may
- actually have.
-
- Our purpose in re-writing the documentation is to
- present it in such a way that it will allow someone completely
- new to computers, bulletin board systems, and telecomputing
- to set up the system with minimal time and effort. In order to
- do this accurately we will need the help of all the RBBS
- sysops that are now using the software. With their input,
- we will be able to present a well written document that fully
- explains the complete package. Full credit will be given to all
- those sysops that participate in this much needed task.
-
- We need the following information from system operators that
- are now using 12.3B version of the software:
-
- 1. Explain problems that you had and have fixed
- and how you fixed it. (anything regardless
- how minor - if you had the problem, someone
- else will).
-
- 2. Explain problems that you have now and cannot
- fix.
-
- 3. Re-write any sections that you feel you can
- explain better than the present manual. For
- example: step by step how to setup a complete system.
-
- 4. Explain as fully as you can, step by step, the
- set-up, use, and maintenance of conferencing.
- And the problems associated with it.
-
- 5. Explain as fully as you can, step by step, the
- set-up, use, and maintenance of DOORS. And
- the problems associated with it. If you are
- using some type of multi-tasking program such
- as MULTI-LINK, explain how it works and step
- by step the set-up and maintenance.
-
- 6. Explain how you have set-up your security levels
- via the PASSWRDS file and how you implement the
- various user levels and time on the system.
-
- 7. Explain, step by step, how you use the graphics
- menus, etc. How you use bulletins and the file
- section. How you set them up and maintained them.
- Explain step by step how you create the graphics within
- system.
-
- 8. Explain anything you would tell a new sysop on
- how to setup and maintain the RBBS system.
- In a step by step fashion, every little detail.
- Include the do's and don'ts.
-
- 9. Explain which RBBS utilities you use and how
- to use them. Utilities like Call Analyzer,
- Ucall111, Calrlog, and any others that you use.
- Also, share where you got them.
-
- 10. Which modem do you use and how does it work
- with the software. (There are some modems
- that will work besides the Hayes Smartmodem
- 1200 - we would like to include which ones
- you know will work and how well.)
-
- With the help of all those on the front lines we will be
- able to put together a manual that will allow anyone, novice
- or expert, to set up the system with relative ease. There
- also many businesses that may use the software with the right
- documentation and a complete understanding of how the
- system works. The more individuals and businesses that use
- the software, the better new versions will be and the more
- support software will be generated to help us all out.
-
- The final product will include a detailed table of
- contents and detailed index. And, of course, the authors of
- the present manual will still be listed as the authors
- with a complete listing of all those that contributed to the
- new manual.
-
- To submit any information that you have time to write:
-
- 1. Put it in a text file, squeezed or unsqueezed.
-
- 2. Leave it with this Dayton RBBS:
-
- Warehouse Group 513-258-0020
- hours available 10pm to 10am
- no other times!!
-
- 3. Our board is basically a private registered user
- only board, therefore, the first time that you
- call, you will have 10 minutes in which to leave
- a comment. Let us know who you are and that you
- are a sysop wanting to help with the re-write
- and you will be given 90 minutes on the system.
- Another reason for signing on is to take a look
- at all the RBBS utilities that we have collected.
- There are quite a few you will like. Include your
- RBBS number and your hours of operation and include
- a voice number for verification.
-
- We are mainly concerned with RBBS 12.3B which at the
- moment is the latest version. Of course, by the time we
- collect all the data and write the manual one or more new
- versions will be available but as you know many of the
- characteristics of the system do not change in major ways and
- the changes can be input fairly easily. If you are using an
- earlier version but have information that may be helpful,
- please submit it. If you want CPC12.3B, which we feel is better
- than the previous versions, you can download it from the
- Dayton RBBS. The board is fairly easy to get into since it
- is a relatively private board.
-
- In the text, include your name, RBBS phone number,
- hours of operation, version that you are using, and
- whether you care if your board is mentioned in the new manual
- with the phone number. Also include a voice line in case we have
- any questions that we may need answered quickly to complete our
- goal of the best documentation.
-
- Please help us out with this major undertaking......
-
- Chuck Childers
-
- PS Please pass this on to any other sysop that you regularly
- converse with. Also, when you log in if you leave your name
- and the password you want to use, we will add your name to
- our user file for future use. We give other sysops access to
- our system, if they give us the same privilege.
-
- WE NEED TO HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION BY APRIL 15, 1985. SO
- IF YOU INTEND TO HELP US OUT PLEASE SUBMIT ANY INFORMATION
- BY THAT DATE.
