- a. I feel that my self-development can be attributed to a diversity
- of interests, a willingness to share ideas and a desire to learn from
- others. These factors have led me to become involved in various
- activities, each of which I value as an important supplement to my
- major objectives and as a component of my overall experience.
-
- In particular, the twofold knowledge I've gained by serving as
- Secretary of the Student Council will continually aid in my dealings
- with people. Here I play the dual role of an executive board
- representative and a worker following orders. The first position
- concerns itself with attending official meetings acting as a liaison
- between a large body of students and a comparatively small number of
- administrators. The second position involves the implementation of
- the ideas and policies established in the prior role through posters,
- letters, speeches and other forms of communciation. The blending of
- these seemingly distinct roles has allowed me to gain an insight into
- the many facets of representative leadership.
-
- Acting as a group leader during student orientation and as an
- advisor during registration, I am given the opportunity to spread my
- knowledge of the university's structure, location, requirements and
- atmosphere to others with the hope and intention that they will take
- advantage of what is being offered to them during their college
- careers. Activities such as these continually reinforce my public
- speaking skills and social poise while yielding a special type of
- satisfaction not found in academic achievement.
-
- Two further areas of extracurricular involvement have broadened
- my perspective of college. By working on Alumni Federation committees
- prior to graduation, I've been able to help acquaint members of the
- business community with present students. Strong ties are now
- developing between the two groups, resulting in a bilateral learning
- experience.
-
- The NYU Networks committee, associated with the Office of
- Admissions, operates on the other end of the spectrum. Here I focus
- on potential candidates for admission, with the intention of providing
- them both information regarding programs of study and a student's view
- of the business school environment. I find it particularly gratifying
- to have been appointed for this responsiblity since it signals to me
- that my views are trusted and that my enthusiasm has been well
- received.

- Aside from the university setting, I've also taken advantage of
- opportunities to explore alternative cultures and lifestyles through
- travel, books and exhibits. These activities have allowed me to gain
- an appreciation for my own lifestyle and have guided me in setting
- future standards to strive for.
-
- The combination of the activities discussed above, coupled with
- the strong emphasis which I've placed on my courses and their
- applications, has allowed me to grow significantly during the past few
- years in both academic and social terms. The relationships I've had
- with people in varying situations have also helped me to establish
- relevant self-assessments and outline my potential for success in
- different areas.
