  1.    Effectors are the parts of the body that 
  2. carry out the body's actions in response to 
  3. stimuli.  The primary effectors in the human 
  4. body are the muscles, which are tissues with 
  5. elongated cells specialized for contraction.  
  6. Muscle tissues are governed by the nervous 
  7. system, but, although muscles form the last 
  8. segment of reflex arcs, unlike sensory 
  9. receptors and conductor cells, muscles are 
  10. not part of the nervous system.  There are 
  11. three types of muscle tissue: striated muscle,
  12.  smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.  
  13.    Striated muscle is characterized by its
  14. striated pattern of alternating light and dark 
  15. bands.  This pattern directly results from the 
  16. structure of the contractile units of the muscle.  
  17. The individual cells of striated muscle, called 
  18. fibers, have many nuclei and are also striated.

  20. contractile units, called myofibrils,
