- higher shells contain more subshells, most commonly
- the d and f subshells. Electrons in a d subshell of the
- fourth shell are actually farther from the nucleus
- than electrons occupying the s subshell of the fifth
- shell. The following table lists the order
- in which the subshells are filled.
- Following the arrows through the diagram
- indicates the order of the subshell filling. When an
- arrow exits at the lower left of the diagram, the next
- subshell to be filled is the subshell at the top of the
- arrow chain to the right of the arrow chain that was
- just completed. For example, after the 5s subshell is
- filled, the next electron will enter the 4d subshell.
- The exponents on the subshell designations indicate
- how many electrons can occupy that subshell. This
- method simplifies the process of identifying where
- the electrons of an atom are located.
