In general, the electric fields of electromagnetic waves do not have a particular orientation. In polarized light, however, the electric fields of the individual waves are parallel to each other. Because the magnetic fields are perpendicular to the electric fields, in polarized light, the magnetic fields are also parallel to each other. By convention, the amount of polarization of light is defined by the orientation of the electric fields.
