  7.     Welcome to The A64 Package.  This manual assumes that you are
  8.     familiar with the basic usage of the CLI and WorkBench.  If you
  9.     are not please consult your Amiga user's guide or other books on
  10.     the Amiga.  This manual also makes the assumption that you are
  11.     familiar with using the Commodore 64.  If you want to learn more
  12.     about using the Commodore 64 there are many good books available
  13.     on the subject.

  15.     Throughout this manual some names are used that we would like to
  16.     clarify.  When you see the name "The A64 Package" we are
  17.     referring to the entire package including all its utilities.
  18.     When you see the name "A64" by itself we are referring only to
  19.     the A64 program.  The names: "A64's hardware interface",
  20.     "hardware interface" or just "interface" all refer to the same
  21.     interface.

  23.     Some parts of this manual get a little technical.  We did our
  24.     best to try and explain things in a way that an average user
  25.     would understand them, but it is not always easy to explain
  26.     technical features simply.  If you don't understand a feature
  27.     don't hesitate to experiment with it.

  29.     We recommend that you fully read this manual before attempting to
  30.     use any of the programs included with The A64 Package.

  33. WHAT IS THE A64 PACKAGE?
  34.  
  35.     The A64 Package is both a hardware and software product.  It was
  36.     designed to give Amiga owners the ability to access Commodore 64
  37.     peripherals, programs and data directly from their Amiga.
  38.  
  39.     The hardware is an interface that plugs into the parallel port of
  40.     your Amiga and allows The A64 Package to access Commodore 64 disk
  41.     drives and printers.
  42.  
  43.     The software is a collection of Amiga programs that help bring
  44.     the world of the C64 to the Amiga.  The main program included
  45.     with The A64 Package is A64.  A64 is a Commodore 64 emulator.
  46.     The word emulate means to strive to equal or excel, especially
  47.     through imitation.  A64 emulates the Commodore 64.  This means
  48.     that using A64 is just like using a C64.  There are literally
  49.     thousands of programs available for the Commodore 64 and A64 will
  50.     run a majority of them.  The A64 Package also includes several
  51.     utilities that are meant to compliment A64.  These utilities
  52.     serve a variety of valuable purposes like transferring files to
  53.     and from the C64.

  68.     The A64 Package is especially well suited for C64 owners who want
  69.     to upgrade to the Amiga.  Commodore 64 owners have spent hundreds
  70.     or even thousands of dollars on their C64 peripherals and
  71.     software.  Many of them would like to upgrade to the Amiga, but
  72.     they do not want to lose their investment.  There is a solution!
  73.     The A64 Package will allow them to continue to use their familiar
  74.     Commodore 64 software and peripherals while they're learning how
  75.     to use their powerful, new Amiga.

  77.     Now bridging the gap from the Commodore 64 to the Amiga is easier
  78.     than ever before.  The A64 Package helps to make the upgrade path

  82. WHAT DOES IT COST?

  84.     You can get a complete version of The A64 Package by paying a
  85.     registration fee.  The current registration fee is $39.95 plus
  86.     shipping and handling.  Shipping and handling charges are:  $3.00
  87.     for customers in the US, $4.00 for customers in Canada and $5.00
  88.     for all other countries.

  90.     The adapter cable needed for the A1000 is available for an
  91.     additional $20.00.  If you order the cable with The A64 Package
  92.     we do not charge additional shipping and handling, but if the
  93.     cable is ordered separately then the following shipping and
  94.     handling charges apply:  $3.00 for customers in the US, $4.00 for
  95.     customers in Canada and $5.00 for all other countries.

  100. WHAT YOU GET

  102.     When you become a registered owner of The A64 Package you get a
  103.     complete copy of the software, a two disk set which includes the
  104.     latest version of A64, The A64 Packages' documentation and all of
  105.     the utilities.  The necessary hardware to connect your C64 disk
  106.     drives and printers to your Amiga.  You will also be eligible for
  107.     technical support and be notified when new versions of The A64
  108.     Package are made available.

  131. HOW TO BECOME A REGISTERED OWNER

  133.     Included with the documentation is the file "Registration.form."
  134.     This file serves as a registration form for The A64 Package.
  135.     Please print this file (See PrintFile in the UTILITIES section)
  136.     and then fill it out and send it with your payment to:

  194. WHAT'S IN THE FUTURE

  196.     In the last couple of versions of The A64 Package we have listed
  197.     what can be expected from future versions and we are happy to say
  198.     that we added most of the features in V2.0 that were listed in
  199.     the last manual.  We would like to briefly list them:

  203.         o Amiga printer support
  204.         o Improved Amiga drive support
  205.         o Improved transfer capabilities        
  206.         o Improved modem support
  207.         o File requesters
  208.         o More A64 Prefs features

  211.         o Support for multiple C64 fonts

  213.     We also made countless other improvements in V2.0, but what we're
  214.     trying to show is that we did what we said we would do.  And we
  215.     did it for one reason only.  Because of the many people who
  216.     supported The A64 Package by becoming registered owners.  Thanks
  217.     to these people we were able to continue working on The A64
  218.     Package and make it what it is today.  Which, in our opinion, is
  219.     the best C64 emulation package currently available.

  221.     The response to The A64 Package has dropped off considerably
  222.     since the last release, but we hope that with the release of V2.0
  223.     it will spark a new interest in The A64 Package.  And if the
  224.     response does improve,  we have an all new list of features to
  225.     add:

  228.         o Support for C64 RAM expansion
  229.         o More input devices
  230.         o Complete A3000 support
  231.         o Support for 1581 formats on Amiga drives
  232.         o Better file transfer capabilities
  233.         o The abilty to use C64 drives and printers with Amiga
  234.           programs
  235.         o Faster and more compatible (two areas that can probably
  236.           always be improved no matter how good A64 gets)

  239.         o Documentation and software translations for other

  257.     it can be.  Be either becoming a registered owner yourself or by
  258.     helping to spread the software.  Our goal is to make The A64
  259.     Package available to every Amiga owner who might benifit from its
  260.     use.  We can not do this alone.  If you have some use for The A64
  261.     Package, whether it be running C64 software on the Amiga or
  262.     transferring files or just for the sake of nostalgia, become a
  263.     registered owner.  And even if you don't have a use for The A64
  264.     Package help spread the software by uploading it to a BBS or
  265.     giving it to your local dealer or users group.  With your help we
  266.     can reach our goal.

  269. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
  270.  
  271.     When I first released The A64 Package I contemplated making it a
  272.     commercial product, but because of the reputation of past C64
  273.     emulators I was afraid that most people would not give A64 a
  274.     chance and would think of it as "just another emulator."  So I
  275.     released The A64 Package as a shareware product so people could
  276.     see for themselves that it is a quality product.  I do not regret
  277.     this decision one bit.  We currently have registered owners in
  278.     over 25 countries.  This is fantastic for any product, commercial
  279.     or otherwise.  Because of this level of response I have been able
  280.     to continue work on The A64 Package and it is now in its third
  281.     release.  As long as the support continues I will continue
  282.     working on The A64 Package and doing my best to provide the best
  283.     possible C64 emulator at the lowest possible price.

  286.     registered so far.  It is because of you that A64 V2.0 exists.
