- Isn't a plain blue Workbench background so BORING? Here is a solution.
- This program will set up another playfield in back of your Workbench screen
- and draw a slowly-changing pattern. Since the screen is dual-playfield,
- the pattern does not disturb your Workbench at all--Workbench doesn't even
- know it's there. The pattern is taken from my original Kaleidoscope demo.
-
- To use this program, your Workbench screen must have a background color
- (not black) - the original blue will work. The pattern uses four shades of
- this color, from black up to the current screen color. This allows white
- text to still stand out clearly. The program will automatically adjust for
- changes in Workbench colors.
-
- Stopping the program is simple - hit the close box in the "Kaleidoscope"
- window bar. This removes the dual playfield completely, returning you to a
- normal Workbench screen and freeing all memory used for the playfield (about
- 32K for a standard-size non-interlaced Workbench).
-
- Note that, since four bitplanes are being displayed at high resolution,
- the video chip is very loaded down and will steal time from the bus. The
- resulting slowdown will especially be noticeable if you have no fast memory
- installed (including a 1Meg A500). You can also see the load on the chip by
- looking closely at the screen; you may notice off-color fringes in the
- pattern or fringes around Workbench icons.
-
- This program will work with any size Workbench screen, interlaced or
- non-interlaced, overscan or standard. Compiled with Aztec C68000. There
- are no known bugs, and the program exits cleanly. Of course, there are
- dangers in using this program with any other program that alters the
- Workbench screen. For example, attempting to use DropShadow will present
- you with a blank screen -- the video chip refuses to process it. The only
- way to fix this is to somehow stop either DropShadow or WBKaleidoscope, or
- to reboot.
