  4.     X-Accountant is a program to keep track of your finances.  Some 
  5.     of the features are:
  6.     
  7.     <ul>
  8.       <li> Multiple accounts, which can be open at
  9.     the same time.  Create one xacc account
  10.     for each of your bank accounts.
  11.       <li> Each account keeps a running balance and
  12.     a reconciled balance, so you can keep track
  13.     of the checks that have cleared your account.
  14.       <li> A simple interface.  If you can use the
  15.     register in the back of your checkbook,
  16.     you can use xacc.
  17.       <li> Automatic account reconciling.  At the end
  18.     of the month, open up the reconcile window,
  19.     enter your bank statement's ending balance,
  20.     and check off the transactions that appear
  21.     in the bank statement.  This makes it easy
  22.     to track down any discrepancies.
  23.       <li> QuickFill... if you begin typing 
  24.     in the description field, and the text matches a
  25.     previous transaction, hitting TAB will copy
  26.     that previous transaction.  Handy if you have
  27.     similar transactions on a regular basis.
  28.       <li>Stock/Mutual Fund Portfolios.  Track stocks
  29.         individually (one per account) or in portfolio
  30.         of accounts (a group of accounts that can be 
  31.         displayed together).  
  32.       <li>Quicken File Import.
  33.         Import Quicken Version 3.0 QIF files.

  36.     <h2>Advanced Features</h2>
  37.     X-Accountant offers some features not usually found
  38.     in simpler accounting programs.
  39.     <ul>
  40.       <li>Sub-accounts: A master account can have a hierarchy
  41.         of detail accounts underneath it.  This allows similar
  42.         account types (e.g. Cash, Bank, Stock) to be grouped 
  43.         into one master account (e.g. Assets).
  44.       <li>Double Entry: 
  45.         Every transaction can appear in two
  46.         accounts; one account is debited and the other is 
  47.         credited with exactly the same amount.  With 
  48.         double-entry, a transaction edited in one window 
  49.         will be automatically updated in all other windows 
  50.         showing that transaction, and in both of the 
  51.         accounts.
  52.       <li>Income/Expense Account Types
  53.         (Categories).   When used properly 
  54.         with the double-entry feature, these can be used 
  55.         to create both Balance Sheet and Profits & Losses
  56.         reports.  For example, savings account interest,
  57.         stock dividends, or paychecks can be marked as 
  58.         both a deposit in a bank account, and as income in 
  59.         an Income account type, using the double-entry 
  60.         (transfer) feature.  Similarly, credit card charges
  61.         can be noted in the credit card account, as well 
  62.         as in a corresponding expense account.
  63.       <li>General Ledger: Multiple accounts can be displayed 
  64.         in one register window at the same time.  This can
  65.         ease the trouble of tracking down typing/entry errors.
  66.         It also provides a convenient way of viewing a
  67.         portfolio of many stocks, by showing all transactions
  68.         in that portfolio.
