  4. TeX  formats  the interspersed text and commands contained
  5. in the named files and outputs  a  typesetter  independent
  6. file  (called DVI, which is short for DeVice Independent).
  7. TeX capabilities and language are described  in  The  TeX book.
  8. <P>
  9. TeX  is  normally  used  with  a large body of precompiled
  10. macros, and there are several specific formatting systems,
  11. such  as LaTeX, which require the support of several macro
  12. files.  The basic programs as compiled are  called  initex
  13. and  virtex, and are distinguished by the fact that initex
  14. can be used to precompile macros into a .fmt  file,  which
  15. is  used by virtex.  On the other hand, virtex starts more
  16. quickly and can read a precompiled .fmt file, but it  can-
  17. not create one.  It is the version of TeX which is usually
  18. invoked in production, as opposed to installation.
