  7. CodeNet-8321 Micro Channel interface cards are designed to give IBM PS/2 or
  8. compatible computers a fiber optic link to an Ethernet network segment, based
  9. upon the IEEE 10BASE-FL standard, that is backwards compatible with the earlier
  10. Fiber Optic Inter Repeater Link (FOIRL) IEEE standard. CodeNet fiber optic
  11. Ethernet is more robust and reliable than coax or twisted pair solutions. It is
  12. completely immune to electromagnetic noise and no form of cable damage, like
  13. short circuits, ground faults, reflections, or impedance mismatches, can
  14. disable the network. It is also impossible for a cable to cause a fire or
  15. explosion since there is no electrical current present and it is virtually
  16. impossible for an unauthorized agent to tap into the cable without easy
  17. detection. Workstations can be up to 2 kilometers apart in both point-to-point
  18. and star configurations. Many MultiStar active hubs and CodeStar passive hubs
  19. can be connected together to create LANs supporting thousands of computers in a
  20. single network. Codenet-8321 10BASED-FL/FOIRL cards are compatible with other
  21. CodeNet FOIRL products as well as other manufacturers' FOIRL and 10BASE-FL
  22. concentrators and repeaters

  24. The CodeNet-8321 achieves higher performance because of a 16K buffer memory
  25. architecture. Since this memory buffer is dual-ported and directly accessed by
  26. the PC, the PC simply uses ``move string'' instruction to move data to and from
  27. the buffer in the same way it moves data around its own memory. The
  28. CodeNet-8321 does not require any DMA channels, eliminating DMA conflicts with
  29. other boards and providing maximum Micro Channel performance
  30.  
  31. Because of the fiber's large bandwidth and resulting data transmission
  32. capacity, the network has a long life expectancy. The newer and faster network
  33. standards, like FDDI, use the same fiber as Codenoll fiber optic Ethernet
  34. networks.
