  5. NIP comprises two halves: one supported on remote branch server/workstation and
  6. the other by host system or front end processor.  NIP enables and manages
  7. transactions between the two, with minimum impact on performance of systems
  8. involved and hardware on which they are supported.  Typically, the remote
  9. system will be supported on a branch server, workstation or PC and will
  10. generate a variety of transactions requiring interation with the host system.
  11. Linked applications may be provided by CBS, another source, or both.  X.25 is
  12. the standard NIP implementation, but other optional elements will cover serial
  13. connections, SNA etc.The host operating system is generally UNIX but others
  14. can be specified.  Statistical, diagnostic and management information can be
  15. provided by the host NIP.
