Expert System Shell

All-Ex Plus is a CS-Prolog based multiparadigm frame-based expert system
shell.  It is used to build and run standalone expert systems in UNIX System
V, VMS, and MS-DOS.  Multiparadigm means that this system can represent
knowledge in many different ways:  rules, frames, demons, and metafacts.  The
system consists of two parts:  the knowledge base and the inference engine.
The complete and consistent expert system can be given to the end user (even a
user without any programming experience) for use.  The user only has to give
proper answers to the system.  This dialogue is called a consultation.  All-Ex
Plus has a menu-driven environment, consisting of three levels:  DEVELOPMENT
ENVIRONMENT, where the user can build or examine your knowledge; CONSULTATION
ENVIRONMENT, where the user can ask and respond to questions and gain expert
advice or conclusions; and EXPLANATION OF INFERENCE, where the user can
examine the logic by following the inference process.  The user interface is
multiwindowed with full-screen editing, completed with sophisticated trace
facilities.  Additional characteristics include:  knowledge representation
with rule-based programming (IF..  THEN rules), logic programming (PROLOG
programming), frame-based description, knowledge acquisition, and hierarchical
knowledge base partitioning; inference engine containing backward and forward
reasoning, mixed strategy, variable handling (full backtracking), deep
reasoning (simulation), and frame inheritance (multiple inheritance with
user's strategy); and procedural attachment including demons (defined for
frame slots, actions (in rules).
