  2. SCO Online Support - Technical Library Supplements
  3.  
  4. As you know, the SCO Online Support system provides various
  5. support and educational materials for interactive access via WWW
  6. browsers, our BBS systems, anonymous uucp and ftp.  
  7. These facilities are provided at ftp.sco.com, www.sco.com, and
  8. ftp.uu.net in North America (a few exceptions noted below). 
  9. In addition, many of the supplementary files are provided in the
  10. LIBraries of the SCOFORUM on Compuserve.
  11.  
  12. Europeans may find the mirror site in England more acccessible:

  15. At the SCO sites, the directories online are:

  28. Each of these directories has a README or "info" file that describes
  29. the material therein, and they are fairly self explanatory.

  32. This README describes the Technical Library Supplements.
  33.  
  34. The files in TLS are offered for experimental or educational use.  They
  35. are provided "as-is" to knowledgeable users as a courtesy.  The TLSs
  36. are NOT supported by SCO Support department.   Please do not contact
  37. the friendly folks in the Support department about these files; rather,
  38. direct your comments to the original authors (where named), or to me.
  39.  
  40. In some cases, these are components or updates to existing SCO
  41. Software.  Some of the programs here may be compiled or derived
  42. from freely available copyrighted sources.  Other material may be
  43. educational or supplementary documentation.  All use of this
  44. material is the sole responsibility of the user, and you MUST
  45. observe the copyright and licensing restrictions that are
  46. provided in the cover letters, documentation, and code.
  47.  
  48. We do not intend this to be yet another archive of freely
  49. available software that has been compiled for SCO.  That function
  50. is well served by other archive sites (thanks!).  The material
  51. here is primarily that which SCO uniquely can provide, or which
  52. is not readily available elsewhere.  For other archive sites,
  53. consult the periodically posted list of SCO-related ftp sites in
  54. one of the SCO-related Usenet newsgroups or on Compuserve SCOFORUM.
  55.  
  56. Usually, you will need a licensed SCO operating system to use
  57. these files, and any SCO-owned code here is provided to you under
  58. the terms of your SCO software license(s).  You will also need a
  59. good understanding of how to use the SCO system, and a certain
  60. amount of daredevil, thrillseeking enjoyment of interesting and
  61. colorful results.
  62.  
  63. The available supplements are listed below.
  64.  
  65. These files can be downloaded interactively from the SCO Online
  66. Support BBS.  Follow the menus in the "software toolchest"
  67. selection.  We support kermit, Xmodem, Ymodem and Zmodem.
  68.  
  69. These files are also accessible via anonymous uucp (see below), and
  70. by anonymous ftp, and of course with a suitably configured Internet web
  71. browser.
  72.  
  73. The TLS files are also available as one of many goodies
  74. on the SCO Skunkware CD-ROM.  This promotional CD-ROM is
  75. available at various times and places; contact your SCO supplier
  76. for more info on Skunkware (or join the SCO Developer Alliance).

  122. Generally, we name the TLS distribution files like this:
  123.   
  124.        tlsxxx.1   = binary floppy image, volume 1
  125.        tlsxxx.1.Z = same thing, but compressed
  126.        tlsxxx.ltr = cover letter, ascii file - install info, etc.
  127.        tlsxxx.c   = source code file
  128.        tlsxxx.doc.Z = documentation and other propaganda
  129.        tlsxxx.tar.Z = tar archive file, compressed.
  130.        tlsxxx.tar*  = tar archive file                 
  131.        tlsxxx.ps    = postscript file
  132.        <something else> = miscellaneous documentation, etc.
  133.        tls5xx.*     = TLS targetting SCO OpenServer Release 5
  134.   
  135. Files ending in .Z have been reduced in size by the compress
  136. utility.  The compress and uncompress utilities are included with
  137. SCO XENIX releases 2.3.0 and later, SCO UNIX, and SCO Open
  138. Desktop.  In some cases, we have compressed using the -H option
  139. (LZH algorithm).  Your version of compress in SCO UNIX version
  140. 4.0 or later understands this.  If you have an older compress
  141. utility, you may need to download the newer version of compress
  142. in tls031.
  143.  
  144. Note also that you can get sosco to do the uncompress for you if
  145. you use ftp and refer to the file name without the final ".Z" For
  146. example, to receive an uncompressed copy of tls042.1.Z, enter get
  147. tls042.1 and ftp will uncompress before transmission.  Of course
  148. you want to avoid this if possible, since the uncompressed file
  149. takes longer to transmit.
  150.  
  151. We do not compress all floppy images.  Some SCO distributions
  152. have files that are already compressed and to compress again is
  153. counterproductive.  Some TLS files may just be tar files, not floppy
  154. images.  In some cases the uucp g protocol may raise alarms when used
  155. with certain modems that perform data compression.  If you get
  156. uucp alarms, try turning off data compression in your modem, if it is
  157. used.
  158.  
  159. There are a few gaps in the numbering, due to TLSs not yet ready,
  160. withdrawn, and other assorted reasons.  Also, you may see some
  161. numbers "reserved" for future additions.
  162.  
  163. Anyone is welcome to redistribute this notice to other newsgroups or
  164. customers.  If you have comments about these distributions, feel free to
  165. contact me.  E-mail _strongly_ preferred.  In some cases, authors have
  166. provided their names and indicated willingness to correspond about the
  167. TLSs.   Check the cover letters for author info.
