  3. Program Office, announces signature of DOD Directive mandating use of
  4. Ada for both design and implementation of software for weapons
  5. systems.

  11. Dear Friends of Ada*:
  12.  
  13. I am pleased to announce that on Monday, March 30, 1987 the
  14. Honorable William H. Taft IV (Deputy Secretary of Defense) signed
  15. a DoD Directive entitled "Use of Ada in Weapon Systems"
  16. (tentatively designated DoDD 3405.xx).
  17.  
  18. This directive requires the use of Ada for computers integral to
  19. weapons systems, effective immediately; requires the use of
  20. validated Ada compilers; and requires the use of an Ada based
  21. Program Design Language during the designing of the software.
  22.  
  23. As soon as we in the Ada Joint Program Office receive the
  24. official designation for this Directive, we will distribute the
  25. actual text over the net (which should be within a week).
