  1.  NOVELL UNVEILS NETWARE FOR MACINTOSH v3.0
  2.  Macintosh Desktop Systems Now Fully Integrated Into NetWare

  4. BOSTON, Mass., NETWORLD -- February 11, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., developer of
  5. NetWare systems software products, today unveiled NetWare for Macintosh
  6. v3.0, a complete AppleTalk protocol-suite implementation that fully
  7. integrates Macintosh desktop systems into the NetWare v3.11 network
  8. computing environment.

  10. NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 is implemented as a set of NetWare Loadable
  11. Modules (NLMs) that deliver high-performance AppleTalk Filing Protocol
  12. (AFP) and Printer Access Protocol (PAP) services for Macintosh clients in
  13. the NetWare v3.11 environment.  With NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 running on
  14. NetWare v3.11, Macintosh users can share files and print resources with
  15. DOS, Windows, OS/2 and UNIX desktop systems.  In addition, the NetWare for
  16. Macintosh AppleTalk stack provides the basis for integrating the Macintosh
  17. with complementary Novell services such as NetWare Communication Services,
  18. NetWare NFS (Network File System) and NetWare FTAM (File Transfer Access
  19. and Management).

  21. "Our new product offers Macintosh users full access to NetWare resources
  22. while preserving the native Macintosh interface," said Steve Nelson,
  23. director of product marketing at Novell's Walnut Creek development center. 
  24. "The Macintosh is an ideal personal computer for network computing.  We use
  25. Apple's networking standards to provide services for the Macintosh; we use
  26. NetWare to add value to those services and to integrate the Macintosh with
  27. other desktop computers and other information environments."

  29. "Since June of 1988, Macintosh, DOS and OS/2 users have been able to work
  30. together by using Novell's NetWare," said Randy Battat, Apple vice
  31. president of product marketing.  "Today's announcement is important because
  32. it extends this capability further to include NetWare v3.11 servers."

  34. Primary features of NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 include:
  35.  
  36. o    Native mode NetWare access -- Macintosh users access NetWare resources
  37.      through the Macintosh network client interface.
  38.  
  39. o    NLM implementation -- For the first time, the performance and added
  40.      value of the NetWare v3.11 32-bit environment -- system fault
  41.      tolerance, resource accounting, print management, internetwork routing
  42.      and advanced security -- are now available for Macintosh workstations.

  44. o    Full AFP 2.0 compliance -- Users are assured of data integrity and
  45.      reliability, and are kept current as Macintosh technology evolves.
  46.  
  47. o    Full AppleTalk Phase 1 and Phase 2 compliance -- Supports newer and
  48.      larger AppleTalk Phase 2 networks, as well as users remaining at
  49.      AppleTalk Phase 1, or in transition.

  51. o    Macintosh, DOS, Windows, OS/2 and UNIX users share networked printers
  52.      -- Applications can access Apple LaserWriters or ImageWriters through
  53.      NetWare print queues via PostScript or Diablo 630 emulation.

  55. o    Support for AppleTalk routing over multiple cabling systems -- Users
  56.      can communicate over LocalTalk, Ethernet and Token-Ring internetwork
  57.      topologies.

  59. o    Macintosh client software -- Users can control NetWare capabilities
  60.      such as setting rights, assigning trustees, managing print queues and
  61.      sending messages to other networked users.  Network managers can use
  62.      any Macintosh on the network to perform administrative tasks such as
  63.      adding or deleting users and groups, assigning passwords and setting
  64.      file attributes.

  66. NetWare AppleTalk Support Package v3.0
  67.  
  68. Novell also announced a new NetWare AppleTalk Support Package that adds
  69. AppleTalk protocols and AppleTalk routing capabilities to the NetWare v3.11
  70. operating system.  The NetWare AppleTalk Support Package features flexible
  71. configuration for access to a variety of applications and utilities and
  72. enables third-party network services using AppleTalk.

  74. System Requirements, Pricing and Availability
  75.  
  76. NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 requires the NetWare v3.11 network operating
  77. system.  It will be available as an optional product in April 1991 in two
  78. versions:  a 20-user version lists for U.S. $895 per server; a 100-user
  79. version lists for U.S. $1995 per server.  Through September 30, 1991,
  80. registered NetWare v3.0 customers will be updated to NetWare v3.11 and
  81. receive the 100-user version of NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 at no charge;
  82. registered NetWare v3.1 customers will be updated to NetWare v3.11 when
  83. they purchase NetWare for Macintosh v3.0. The NetWare AppleTalk Support
  84. Package lists for U.S. $495 per site license and will be available in the
  85. second quarter of 1991 through Novell's After Market Products group.

  91. Novell continues to ship and support NetWare for Macintosh v2.0, a Value
  92. Added Process (VAP), as part of the NetWare 2.15c network operating system. 
  93. NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 is fully compatible with the NetWare for
  94. Macintosh VAP.
