  3. NetWare for Macintosh 2.0
  4.  
  5. Recognizing the benefit to the user of supporting Apple's native
  6. networking environment, Novell has incorporated Macintosh networking
  7. standards into its design of NetWare for Macintosh.  NetWare supports the
  8. standards of the Macintosh, and adds value to them with NetWare features,
  9. such as an integrated file system, System Fault Tolerance, high
  10. performance and reliability, and advanced security.  
  11.  
  12. NetWare for Macintosh is server and client software that provides NetWare
  13. file and print services to Macintosh computers.  NetWare for Macintosh
  14. runs in a NetWare server environment as a Value Added Process (VAP).  
  15.  
  16. Because NetWare for Macintosh supports AppleTalk and AFP, the AFP client
  17. software that is part of the Macintosh operating system is able to log
  18. directly into a NetWare server.  And because NetWare for Macintosh
  19. supports PAP, Macintoshes can print to NetWare for Macintosh queues using
  20. the Mac's built in Postscript printer driver.  The only NetWare software
  21. that needs to be used on a NetWare client Macintosh is a utility, in the
  22. form of a Macintosh desk accessory, to control NetWare specific
  23. capabilities such as the setting of rights, assigning of trustees,
  24. managing of print queues, and sending of NetWare messages.  In addition
  25. there is an application for network supervisors called the NetWare
  26. Control Center that can be used to create accounts, set up print queues,
  27. and do most forms of Macintosh network administration on a Macintosh.

  29. NetWare for Macintosh version 2.0 is an evolutionary update that provides
  30. support for AppleTalk Phase 2 protocols, AppleTalk Phase 2 over Token
  31. Ring media, AppleTalk over ARCNET, AFP 2.0, The Apple LaserWriter's
  32. Printer Access Protocol (PAP), and enhancements to the Macintosh NetWare
  33. utilities.

  35. A breakdown of the benefits of these additions is as follows:

  37. What's New in NetWare for Macintosh 2.0?
  38.  
  39. AppleTalk Phase 2:  AppleTalk Phase 2 is an extension of AppleTalk.  The
  40. extension provides support for larger networks, which were limited to 254
  41. nodes per network with AppleTalk Phase 1.  AppleTalk Phase 2 also
  42. provides for AppleTalk support over Token Ring cabling (TokenTalk).  
  43.  
  44. Additionally, AppleTalk Phase 2 allows for the logical, not just
  45. physical, partitioning of networks into different zones.  Zones are an
  46. AppleTalk defined way of grouping network users and devices into
  47. workgroups.  The AppleTalk protocol filters network IDs to show a user
  48. only the devices within a users zone.  Under AppleTalk Phase 1, devices
  49. such as the Apple Internet Router, or the Kinetics FastPath had to be
  50. used to physically separate a network in order to create zones. 
  51. AppleTalk Phase 2 permits multiple zones to be assigned to a physically
  52. continuous network

  54. TokenTalk:  TokenTalk brings the services of the AppleTalk network system
  55. to Token Ring (802.5) network users.  All services provided by AppleTalk
  56. are now available to Token Ring users.  TokenTalk supports AppleTalk
  57. Phase 2 networks only. 
  58.  
  59. Novell has written a TokenTalk driver for NetWare 2.15 servers that works
  60. with IBM's Micro Channel and AT-Bus 4MB and 16MB Token Ring Cards.  The
  61. TokenTalk drivers for Macintosh clients will be written by the supplier
  62. of the Token Ring Macintosh card.  All drivers for a Macintosh client
  63. written to the Apple TokenTalk specification should be compatible with
  64. TokenTalk on the NetWare server.
  65.  
  66. AppleTalk over ARCNET:  A driver extension was written to support
  67. AppleTalk over Novell's Turbo RX-Net driver for NetWare 2.15 servers. 
  68. The driver extension permits Macintosh clients to attach to NetWare
  69. servers via ARCNET.  ARCNET cards for the Macintosh are available from
  70. several third parties.  Drivers for Macintosh clients will be written by
  71. the supplier of the Macintosh ARCNET cards.

  73. AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) 2.0:
  74.  
  75. NetWare for Macintosh supports AFP 2.0 because Novell has a commitment to
  76. keep the installed base up to date with the evolution of the Macintosh's
  77. technology.  
  78.  
  79. Updated NetWare Macintosh Utilities:  The NetWare Desk Accessory is a
  80. utility which enables users to set the rights and access the print queues
  81. of their environment.  The NetWare Control Center (NCC) is an application
  82. included with NetWare for Macintosh that allows a supervisor to manage
  83. the network from a Macintosh workstation.  
  84.  
  85. In NetWare for Macintosh 2.0 these utilities are enhanced to support
  86. NetWare 386 folder and file rights,  NetWare file attributes, NetWare
  87. folder flags, and NetWare print queues.  With NetWare  2.15 and NetWare
  88. for Macintosh acting as a bridge to a NetWare 386 server, users can
  89. administer files and folders on a NetWare 386 server.
  90.  
  91. In addition, a "notify" init was developed so users could receive
  92. messages sent by other computers.  A Macintosh workstation can now
  93. receive messages from the server, or from another Macintosh or  PC.  For
  94. example, NetWare has the ability to put expiration dates on the validity
  95. of passwords, and notify the user when it is about to expire.  The
  96. "notify" init for the Macintosh will allow the Macintosh to recieve the
  97. server's message.
  98.  
  99. Shared Fonts:  Apple's LaserWriter NTX has a SCSI port for users who want
  100. to attach a hard disk containing 3rd party font libraries, such as those
  101. from Adobe.  In NetWare for Macintosh 2.0, we have enabled the querying
  102. of a queue for fonts.  
  103.  
  104. Update Information for NetWare for Macintosh 2.0
  105.  
  106. NetWare for Macintosh will initially be offered as a separate update kit,
  107. independent of the NetWare 2.15 operating system.  The update kit is
  108. available directly from Novell in the United States.  Internationally it
  109. is available through authorized resellers who work directly with
  110. authorized Novell international distributors.  Customers who have
  111. purchased NetWare Assurance for  ELS II, Advanced, or SFT NetWare will
  112. automatically receive NetWare for Macintosh 2.0 at 
  113. no charge.

  115. Customers who purchased ELS II, Advanced, or SFT before August 1, 1990
  116. can purchase NetWare for Macintosh v2.0 for $200 U.S.  If the customer
  117. has a version of NetWare earlier than 2.15c, they need to update to
  118. NetWare 2.15c  in order to support NetWare for Macintosh 2.0.
  119.  
  120. Customers who purchased ELS II, Advanced, or SFT after August 1, 1990
  121. will be eligible to receive a free software update of NetWare for
  122. Macintosh 2.0.  
  123.  
  124. NetWare for Macintosh 2.0 will come in two packaging kits; one for
  125. servers which require 5.25" media, and one for servers which require 3.5"
  126. media.  In all cases, the kit will also contain documentation, and 3.5"
  127. Macintosh disks containing Macintosh client software.
  128.  
  129. To order Updates (U.S.A.)
  130.  
  131. Customers who purchased version 2.15c of ELS II, Advanced, or SFT NetWare
  132. prior to August 1, 1990 can order NetWare for Macintosh v2.0 for $200 in
  133. the U.S. by calling 1-800-UPDATE1.  If the customer has a version of the
  134. NetWare OS earlier than 2.15c, they will need to update to NetWare 2.15c 
  135. in order to support NetWare for Macintosh 2.0.  A NetWare OS update can
  136. be done through NetWare Assurance.   
  137.  
  138. Customers who purchased ELS II, Advanced, or SFT NetWare since August 1,
  139. 1990 are eligible to receive NetWare for Macintosh 2.0 update kit free of
  140. charge through the following process:
  141.  
  142. ∙ Customer calls 1-800-UPDATE1.
  143. ∙ 1-800-UPDATE1 requests FAX copy of dated sales reciept and sends the
  144. order to order entry for processing.*
  145. ∙ Customers can pay the order by check, VISA, Mastercard or American
  146. Express.
  147.  
  148. All orders will be shipped UPS Ground.  If the customer requires faster
  149. delivery, the update kit can be sent Federal Express P2 (2nd day) for an
  150. additional charge of $10.00 U.S.
  151.  
  152.  *Customers who have lost their receipt will be dealt with on an
  153. individual basis.

  155. To order Updates (International)
  156.  
  157. International updates will be done through the Novell distributors, and
  158. ultimately the resellers.  NetWare for Macintosh will be distributed as a
  159. separate update kit.  International Customers who have purchased NetWare
  160. Assurance for ELS II, Advanced, or SFT NetWare will automatically be sent
  161. NetWare for Macintosh 2.0.
  162.  
  163. Customers  who purchased NetWare prior to August 1, 1990, will be able to
  164. order the update through their reseller for $200 US  (or country
  165. equivalent).  If the customer has a version of NetWare earlier than
  166. 2.15c, they are required to update to NetWare 2.15c in order to support
  167. NetWare for Macintosh 2.0.  A NetWare OS update can be done through
  168. NetWare Assurance.   
  169.  
  170. Customers who purchase NetWare 2.15c after August 1, 1990 can receive the
  171. update for free.    The international distributors will provide the
  172. update via a Novell Authorized Reseller.  Customers must supply proof of
  173. purchase to get the kit at no charge.  Resellers must supply customers
  174. proof of purchase to be credited for their cost by the Novell
  175. distributor.
