- FYI #050390ck
-
- If NetBIOS is loaded on a server (as a VAP or special process) and
- Add Name is performed, a network with a physical loop through a
- bridge can cause the Name Claim packet to be acknowledged by the
- originating server. This situation is the result of the address
- change in the packet information as the Name Claim packet crosses
- the bridge from one LAN to the other.
-
- Racal/Interlan experienced this problem with their gateway process,
- which is linked into NetWare. When the gateway attempts to add a
- NetBIOS name, the packet passes through the bridge and loops back
- to the NetWare server. The gateway does not know that it is
- looking at its own packet and it sends an acknowledgement packet
- back through the loop to itself, which nullifies the Name Claim.
- Since NetBIOS cannot add any names, the gateway shuts down.
-
- This situation could also appear in other linked processes or VAPs
- that load NetBIOS on the server. For that matter, anytime a
- loopback is experienced where the address has been changed in the
- packet (ie. unresolved router configuration errors), the Name Claim
- will be dropped. NetBIOS will be enhanced to check for such
- address changes in the next release.
