  7. INFORMATION:   NetWare 386 v3.10a 
  8.                386a file server with 2 DCBs and 4 embedded SCSI drives 
  9.   
  10. PROBLEM:       A test was set up in the lab using this configuration.  A
  11.                problem was encountered when going into MONITOR and select
  12.                DISK INFORMATION and trying to select the drive that has
  13.                gone down.  It Abends the file server.  It did this no
  14.                matter which drive went down.

  16. COMMENTS:      This test was done by pulling the power cable off the drive.
  17.  
  18.                Another test was setup using a slightly different
  19.                configuration.  The duplexing was done between a Channel 0
  20.                MFM controller and a Channel 2 DCB, and a Channel 1 DCB with
  21.                a Channel 2 DCB.  A workstation was set up running a batch
  22.                file that copied files to the duplexed drives in an infinite
  23.                loop.  This is a table of test results when accessing the
  24.                disk information in MONITOR after crashing the duplexed
  25.                drive:

  34.                In a production environment, usually something mechanical on
  35.                the drive goes wrong or some of the circuitry fails.  The
  36.                result is seriously corrupted data which causes the drive to
  37.                crash.  For this reason it is probably wiser to pull the
  38.                data cable when simulating a drive crashing.  
  39.  
  40.                Pulling the power cord may simulate a power outage.  Except
  41.                that in most cases the file server is on the same power line
  42.                as the subsystem or internal drive.  So both the file server
  43.                and drives go down when the power goes out.
